The Fountain DVD Art - Page 2

Off topic, but did anyone else pick up the new Darren Aronofsky Collection that dropped yesterday? I picked it up because they're advertising that "Pi" now has an anamorphic transfer, but was I in for a surprise when I opened it up and found the same old disc from years ago. Fucking Lionsgate liars.

Here's my attempt. The files I found weren't quite of the highest quality, so I had to use more than one image on the front (really wanted to just use the tree image - it just gorgeous). The text on the front cover & spine is the same as the text on Izzy's book - I still have to clean it up a little, but other than placing the WB & Regency logos on the spine, I think this is pretty much done.

Feel free to critique. What should I change/remove/add?

Here's a slightly larger and flat version (about 50% of the printing size) so you can read the text on the back.

Also note the chud.com pullquote!

That looks great, Wayden. Classy.

Not bad, but I can't stand when there's on image above the title and another one below it, like the original artwork and yours.

Damn - just realized I posted this in the wrong thread. Oh well.

I have no problem with sharing it once I put the finishing touches on it. This is the first cover I've made, so I haven't researched the printing part yet. Maybe you can just go to Kinko's and get it done...

Maybe I will post it on Aronofsky's myspace...

Yeah, it bothered me too, but nothing I can do about it. I didn't have a large enough image (resolution wise) to cover the front cover. So I just picked the two best looking images. The stars from the bottom slightly fade into the pool of water, and along with the original text on there, I figured it worked.

I like the idea already stated that the case look like Izzy's journal book. Unless this becomes a phenomenonal success on DVD, WB wouldn't do something that grand though.

IGN says Matthew Libatique's cinematography is ruined by the DVD. Shit!

Shadow areas are swaths of crushed blackness that make it nearly impossible to see figures against their backgrounds and generally make a mess of Matthew Libatique's cinematography that has been praised for its artistry.

Things get a little better when the scenes are more brightly lit, but it never gets better than passable. Details are soft and unless it's a close-up of an unmoving object, there is a lack of sharpness to the image. With subtle art direction that constantly echoes and references details from the three time periods and is meant to weave a hypnotic tapestry for the story to play out against, for the visuals to be so dim is simply unacceptable.

It was bad enough that I paused the film and broke out the Digital Video Essentials calibration disc to see if something had gone awry since its last checkup - perhaps an equipment malfunction or the cats were playing with the remote - but it was still setup properly and other discs and HD television shows looked fine; the problem is with the transfer. It's a crying shame.
What's curious is that they are using the old box art in their review. Hmm...

My sort of local indie record store actually broke street on both this AND the Pan's Labyrinth DVDs, so I picked them up today.

I didn't really notice any major problems with the transfer while watching on my LCD. Maybe it's because my DVD player doesn't do progressive. My only real complaint is that the music in the featurettes is pretty fucking terrible. And no commentary.

[edit]checking the text on parchment opening on the PC yields some more distinct artifacting, but I doubt I'd have noticed if I hadn't been looking for it.

Comic book writer Jamie S. Rich has an excellent review up on DVD Talk, and he found no problem with the transfer either:

happy that it is in the world.
hope more folks will get to see it.

as many of you can tell it is light on the extras as compared to my previous dvd releases.

everything at the studio was a struggle.
for instance: they didn't want to do a commentary track cause they felt that it wouldn't help sales.
i didn't have it in me to fight anymore.
whatever.

so:
niko, my friend who did the doc on the dvd came up with a novel idea.
we recorded a commentary track ourselves.
we're gonna post it on a site soon, http coming soon.
you can play it and watch the flick and hopefully you'll enjoy it.

i do hope to do a big special edition at some point. but for that to happen the dvd is gonna have to sell.
i got a lot of extras in my bag so who know maybe if you all write to criterion they'll get interested (suggest the fountain as a title: mulvaney@criterion.com).

they've been into pi and requiem but because the first run of dvd's had so many extras they didn't know what else they could add. but the fountain...

i hope you are all well. i've been writing. stuff is coming. gonna know what we are doing next soon enough.

best,
da

I'll be buying this DVD, if only to add to the sales figures and hopefully get a better one next time. Thanks for the update Detonathor. Anxiously awaiting the commentary, and I just sent an email to that address.

great lil update, fuck WB (even though they agreed to make the movie in the first place, but godDAMN its like they regretted their decision immediately).

everyone email criterion!!! mulvaney@criterion.com

Netflix just notified me this is shipping today, and they say it's the HD-DVD version. I wasn't aware this was coming to hd-dvd...

Hey, come on now. They gave $30 million to a guy whose last film was an NC-17 movie about the dangers of addiction and dreams and before that made a movie about math and Jews to do a film about the beauty of death. They get a pass in my book regarding their handling of it.

Per Criterion:

Hi Alan,

We have no plans at this time for "The Fountain," but thanks for your email!

Sincerely,

Tamara

Yeah, I got the same response. Still, it only took me a minute to write the email, and maybe it got someone's attention.
