It would be a crime not to get through this list without having at least one character from a Steven Bochco show on this list (no Sipowitz?) and Bruce Weitz's Mick Belker is my personal favorite. He can go from snarling and growling to sweet and caring in the same breath -- as in the many scenes when booking a perp would be interrupted by a phone call from his beloved mother. And while he was a cop who seemed reckless, he also stayed true to himself and to his precinct, living by an own personal moral code.

Rath, great call on Belker. I was considering naming him. In that case, my final pic will be...

63. Det. Kay Howard - Homicide: Life on the Street

She was the only woman on homicide but it wasn't an issue of conention for them. She had the best damn clearence rate of the squad and knew how to work the cases. Not to mention being shot in the chest, living and continuing to work the cases.

HARRY D'AMOUR

Like Dickson's Dresden nomination, I'm throwing Harry in, not so much for his cinematic portrayal in Lord of Illusions, but because he's earned it from his appearances in Barker's books and the film is simply a qualifier(Course, I haven't watched LOI in quite sometime. Maybe it holds up better than I remember).

Clive sums up the character better than I could...

"I've traveled a long way with Harry D'Amour. He first appeared in a story I wrote almost a decade ago now, 'The Last Illusion'. Since then, I've recounted his life and troubled times in two novels and some short fiction. I've not made the road very easy for him. His destiny, it seems, is to be in constant struggle with what might be loosely called 'the forces of darkness', though he claims he'd be quite content investigating insurance fraud. His reluctance is, trust, part of his charm. He's not a Van Helsing, defiantly facing off against some implacable evil with faith and holy water. His antecedents are the troubled, weary and often lovelorn heroes of film noir - private detectives with an eye for a beautiful widow and an aversion to razors."-Clive Barker
