Since Rath gave the ok...

So, you've solved the murder, exposed the culprit and yet you are no closer to solving the greatest mystery of all...that of human existence. Yes, it was simple to deduce that a jilted Anna Maria had killed Mr. Lombard, her ex-lover, using a poisoned dart frog disguised as a piece of chocolate. The motive was clear, but you are still left with an underlying despair from the pointlessness of it all. You've suddenly found yourself in need of a different breed of investigator. Someone who can make sense of it all. Enter Bernard and Vivian Jaffe, the existentialist detectives, to help solve your personal existential crises.

38. Phillip Marlowe (The Big Sleep, et al.)

Phillip Marlowe, the archetypal hardboiled detective in an art deco L.A. populated (mostly) by beautiful dames. Between this character and Sam Spade, it's hard to read a detective story without picturing Humphrey Bogart in the roll. As I mentioned earlier, it's a tribute to the character that he can solve the mystery of "The Big Sleep" while even its author cannot. And, in the end, does it really matter. Any trip with Phillip Marlowe is bound to be a hell of a ride.

And let's not even get started on those wild Sternwood girls...

Reasons-A CHUD's essentials and Micah says it better than me
Quote:
This baby takes everything you think you know about cop buddy flicks and throws it out of the window. It all starts with Chance, who goes way beyond merely being the typical rebellious 80s cop eager to shoot first and ask questions later. The guy’s woman (80s mainstay Darlanne Fluegel) is an informant he keeps under his thumb by threatening to throw her back in jail. When he can’t get the money he wants to make an undercover buy, he jacks it. If he’s got to endanger lives of innocent people to get what he needs, so what? He lives his life virtually indistinguishable from a criminal.

41: David Addison (Moonlighting)

For a number of reasons. He solves cases. He can take a beating. He is played by Bruce Willis. He nails Cybill Shepherd on occasion. He organises limbo competitions. He sometimes directly addresses the viewer. He once transformed into a claymation frog on national TV. And best of all, he's funny:

"Who are you?"
"Addison. David. Not necessarily in that order."

"Women! can't live with 'em, can't leave 'em on the kerb when you're done with 'em!"

42.Det. Sgt. Nick Tellis (Narc). I really love this movie and Jason Patric gives a great performance here. There are still a lot of nominees I'm wanting to choose but none had such a powerful effect on me as this one. That's probably the best way to explain why I feel he deserves a spot. I fthat's not enough, he's relentless in his search, has contacts in the worst parts of Detroit, and an emotionaly unstable quality that gives him that little bit of an edge that makes a great cop.

I swear that I'm not trying to start a fight or derail this thread, but I saw something here that brings back some not-so-old resentments. I Hated Huckabees so much that I considered seeing a therapist to deal with my anger toward it and those two goddamn navel-gazing "detectives". And I generally love Dustin Hoffman. Again, I apologize, but a little purging was needed.

Portrayed by real life veteran cop Dennis Farina, whose moustache could kick the shit out of you.

Because engaging in dangerous high speed chases and killing fellow cops should be no obstacle to tracking down a drug lord. He might not be a "good cop" but he's a relentlessly dedicated cop.

Will Graham is listed at #32 and in that case I propose a new #47 and I'm kind of surprised he isn't here by now:

Irwin "Fletch" Fletcher - Fletch

He'll go to impossible lengths to get the story, always ready with a smartass remark, an alias and a great disguise. Not to mention he introduced the name "John Cocktoasten" to the lexicon.

Little known fact: Following it's release in 1984, police departments across the country implemented many of Det. Axel Foley's unorthodox investigative techniques including the "banana in the tailpipe" trick. These techniques were cited as an invaluable new weapon in the war against crime. Also, the number of unsolved missing children cases across the country dropped dramatically once The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children began using The Golden Child as a training video for it's staff of investigators. For these contributions, I nominate Det. Axel Foley and leave the window open for a future nomination of Chandler Jerrel.

50. Aqua Teen Hunger Force. Meatwad, Frylock and Master Shake may have given up detective work, but, for a while, if something was created in a lab or came from outer space, you can bet they would be there to insult it and possibly investigate it. Or hide from it. Or go swimming.
I don't want to derail the thread but I don't know if the Aqua Teen Hunger Force counts. Yes, they are listed as some kind of "Detective" agency but they don't really do anything except sit around and have the most random shit on record come at them while pissing off their neighbor

I mean The Dude does something (Figures out who peed on his rug), Inspector Gadget tries to do something (While having no actual clue as to what's really going on), Lt. Drebin is trying to figure out who would attack the Queen of England.

And while I'm not a fan of I heart Huckabees, I'll accept the "Existential Detectives" because they are doing some form of detective work.

But in my view, ATHF doesn't count.
I slightly disagree (they did some detective work in the first 2 or 3 episodes) but if it's agreed that the link is too weak, I have no qualms with it being removed.
I would argue that a character has to do detective work pretty regularly or the entire setup whether it would be movie, book or show involved them in figuring something out that affected their situation in a detective fashion. I don't think an episode or two of a show doing a detective send-up for just that one episode counts.

Because then any lame sitcom trying to lampoon the whole "The Butler did it" scenario would count.

One of my favorites. I was going back and forth about nominating one or both of these. But decided against since it seemed like Doe played them the entire movie. Great detectives, and I agree that Somerset was a better detective, but Doe just gave himself up in order to complete his brilliant masterpiece. Nevertheless, I'm glad thy're up here.

Do they count as one or two?

He listed them as one and I figure if it was done for the Huckabees, it can be done here.

I put them together because other then being the final piece to Doe's puzzle Mills really didn't contribute much to the case.

I was going to put Mulder and Scully from the X-Files, but I wasn't sure if they counted.

We're getting close to 64 and there are still some good characters out there.

Obviously, you contact Angel Investigations: The rogue demon hunter. The brilliant scientist hotty. The hip urban badass (later, magical lawyer). The snotty hotty heart of the team. The vampire with a soul... and then another vampire with a soul (but I digress). Sure, he's no proton pack, but Angel is out there helping the helpless and saving L.A. from the things that go bump in the night. Also, he occasionally turns into a muppet.

I'm going to throw one more into the pot since I kind of skipped a day waiting for the go ahead from Rath on my "existentialist detectives" pick.

Harry Potter

Apart from The Harry Potter books and subsequent film adaptations being labeled as children's fantasy they are also part of the grand tradition of children's mystery literature such as Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys. Each film contains a central mystery that must be solved, and while Harry may not do the solving all by his lonesome, requiring just as much amateur sleuthing prowess from his friends and superiors, I'm sticking with just the main character for the nomination.

Simon & Simon

Okay, the show was the definition of lightweight, but it coasted by on the charm of its cast. Future Carpenter physicist Jameson Parker as A.J. and the one and only Major Dad Gerald McRaney as Rick, the always bickering brothers who had no problem getting their act together in time to solve the crime. The show also had the good fortune of having Tim Reid in a supporting role.

Would have mentioned Thomas Magnum, but I was a bigger fan of Simon & Simon.

I am outlawing both Aqua Teen Hunger Force and Harry Potter. I've never seen ATHF, but based on the discussion and what other people said, it doesn't seem like what we're going for. Same with Potter -- the books are fantasy, and while there's a central mystery that's investigated by Potter and Co., it's too tangential a connection to the Hardy Boys, Nancy Drew, etc.

I also don't agree with pairing up Somerset and Mills, but it's true you can't have one without the other, so, pass.

Good call.

Fair enough on Potter. I knew it was a stretch, but I still feel those first two books and films, aside from the fantasy elements, clearly fall into the amateur sleuth category, as Harry and friends definitely have to do some investigating to get to the bottom of the central mysteries involved. I was being a bit unorthodox with that choice since it seems too easy for someone to do a google search and throw out a Charlie Chan or Mr. Moto.

Everyone's got a favorite Munch moment -- it's one of the reasons why the guy has been on more television shows on more networks than any other character over fourteen years and seventeen television seasons. (For the record, Belzer has played Munch on "Homicide," "Law & Order," "SVU," "Trial By Jury," "The Beat," "The X-Files," "Arrested Development," as a muppet on "Sesame Street," and is slated to play Munch in an upcoming French version of "SVU.") For me, though, my favorite moment is the first time we ever met this great, sarcastic, tough character. "I am not Montel Williams!" No, John. You're not.

Was there a Gentry movie? Because, not to be a dick, but:

Quote:
For the sake of argument, I'm saying that a detective must have been portrayed either on film or televison to qualify.
I know that it's gotten a little muddled in that we've had people picking characters who got cinematic portrayals but first appeared in books, but if we open it up to detectives who haven't gotten a portrayal on film this late in the game, it'll muddle things more, I think.

Oh, and I should have picked Easy Rawlins instead of Munch. Damnit.

So is #56 out?

If so I'll add....

Easy Rawlins (Devil in a Blue Dress)

Other then the above movie I don't have that much experiance with the character. I'm only have way through with one of Walter Mosley's books that feature him.

So just click here to learn more about Ezekiel "Easy" Rawlins.

Since I'll probably only have one more selection, I've thought about this choice for a little while trying to hash out what character and while there are tons still not mention (Especially in the book category) I know that no list will be complete. In any case, my next and probably final pick for this list is:

#57 Det. Meldrick Lewis - Homicide: Life on the Street

While Pembleton personifies the motivation that one wants to be a homicide detective. Lewis could be viewed as the regular guy who came into the job. He's a "Baltimore Motorhead", a guy who represents the city he polices. And while Pembleton handled the stone cold whodunnits and Redballs, Lewis delt with the city's drug murders and other not as sexy-murders. A guy who came from the projects and made something of himself.

Not to mention him having to contend with the suicide of his first partner (Crosetti) but having to contend with the fall out of the Luther Mahoney drug murders and other stories along the way. He, much in the same way McNulty does, represents the people that are city po-lice.

No Kojak?
No Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew?
Jessica Fletcher?
Thomas Magnum?
Dan Dark?
Dick fucking Tracy?
Harry Angel?

There are eight more spots, one of those people can be on the list. So get out there and nominate!

I mean I would think Molt would've nominated Magnum by now.

We need some more women on the list, unfortunately, we've already picked a lot of the bigger names. Fletcher, Miss Marple, and Nancy Drew are the only others who I would think. Maybe Veronica Mars.

The Meldrick pick is great, by the way. This thread makes me want to watch "Homicide" again.
I considered nominating Nancy Drew (as portrayed by Pamela Sue Martin) for prurient reasons, but as I had nominated the detective who took down my favorite villain (Graham and Lecter, respectively) I also wanted to honor the guy who bested my second favorite villain.

57. Jeffrey Beaumont (Blue Velvet)

Nice college boy Jeffrey returns home to Lumberton, USA and finds a severed ear, meets a couple of gals, and learns that Pabst Blue Ribbon is the favorite beer of the criminal underworld. Our amateur detective sniffs for clues to the mystery of the ear, donning disguises, sneaking into apartments and taking covert photographs with a home-made box camera, and is able to take a nitrous-fueled beating like a pro. Eventually takes down colorful fellow Frank "Here's to your fuck" Booth and makes the world safe for kidnapped children and mechanical robins, or something.

I wonder if someone will nominate Hank and Dean Venture?
Good choice on Blue Velvet, I would've never thought of that. I wouldn't necessarily go with Hank and Dean Venture since that's like a Johnny Quest sort of thing.

Speaking of Female detecitves, I guess other names could include

Det/Sgt. Kay Howard-Homicide
Sgt. Lucy Bates - Hill Street Blues
Deputy U.S. Marshall Karen Sisco - Karen Sisco/Out of Sight
Sgt. Pepper - Police Woman
Agent Dana Scully - X-Files
Chief Marge Gunderson - Fargo
