The Chicago Cubs March to the 2007 World Series - Page 4

At just 4 games behind, it's pretty tough to exclude the defending world series champs. Even worse is the fact that they only won 83 games last year which was enough to take the division. Even with where they are now, one hot streak (say 8 of 10) coupled with .500 ball could get them to 83.

Milwaukee will continue to fade. At the beginning of the season no one expected them to do anything. They are starting to fall down to where they should be. The Cards will be leapfrogging them soon enough.

66-62

Except the Cards have shitty pitching.

Thank god the Brewers don't want the division. They let the Cubs keep a lead even when they keep on losing.

CAn't wait for the series coming up. Hope to have a 2.5 game lead.

First

Chicago Cubs 67 63 .515 -
St. Louis 64 64 .500 2
Milwaukee 65 66 .496 2.5

So now the Cards can be taken seriously. Though once they face the DBacks, Cubs, Philly in a stretch they should be taken out. Plus they have no off days thanks to rain and the death of Hancock.

They say Ben Sheets may start Wed.
Big Z vs Sheets? tom night.
Gallardo vs Lilly

As long as the Cubs keep it close because the Brewers pen is horrible.

That's one better than both the Cards and Brewers combined lately. Sheets returning changes that.

but you are wrong becaus Lilly has been great this year. Hill has the lowest ERA on the team but lacks run support. Marquis and MArshal have been hit and miss.

The Brewers lowest ERA(minus the injured Sheets) is 4.78. Cubs highest is Marquis at 4.26

The Cards-Wainwright at 3.86 and a bunch of stiffs.
Lilly is just a marginally good left handed pitcher. Nothing special whatsoever. I'm a Toronto fan so I've seen plenty of the guy.

Also, I'm not arguing that the pitching in the rest of the division stinks. It absolutely does.

68-64 2.5 games up

2/3 ain't bad. Demster had me nervousing in the 9th an Capuano's magic against the Cubs is over. Sheets back should really help the Brewers but their bullpen continues to suck.

Chicago Cubs 68 64 .515 -
Milwaukee 66 67 .496 2.5
St. Louis 64 66 .492 3

Biggio visits Wrigley for the last time. So glad because he was truely a Cub killer. Pitt is at Mil.

Marshall vs Patton(L)
Marquis vs Rodriguez(L)
Hill vs Williams(R)

Not happy with 2 lefties but should be able to take 2/3 again.

And I get to see Penny vs Lily on Tuesday. Tough but Penny struggled against the Nats last outing.

Cubs get Trachsel back
The human rain delay is back.

Cubs had a spot on their 40 man roster and decided to get bullpen help/insurance vet starter for the playoff run.

On a positive note he has pitched well 6 starts giving up 3 runs or less and going 6 innings in 5/6 starts.
Quote:
The Cubs, fortifiying their rotation before Friday's midnight deadline for setting post-season rosters, have obtained Orioles right-hander Steve Trachsel for two minor leaguers, according to major-league sources.

Trachsel, who turns 37 on Oct. 31, cleared waivers and was perhaps the best of the starting pitchers currently available. He is 1-1 with a 2.37 ERA in six August starts, and 6-8 with a 4.48 ERA in 20 starts overall this season
It'll be wait and see how he does out of the pen. CAn't be worse than sending scott Eyre out there and might give some other RP a break.

What a fucking frustrating month after the joy of watching the Cubs catch the Brewers. They should be up by 5 games atleast but settle for 1.5

Zambrano is sucking balls and I can only hope Steve Traschel rights the ship. I can't believe I had to type it but it's true.

Hopefully some Cubs will hit some bombs into the left field bleachers. Hopefully Luis Gonzalez will be starting in LF so I can taunt him about his stats sucking since he went off the steroids.

What a shitty, boring game. Cubs fucked up the first inning with a DP then never really got anything going. Sori has a great arm as he threw out 2 guys at the plate. He acts like a little leaguer in the OF always fidgiting.

Only good part came in batting practice when I caught a HR ball by a Cub.

Cubs better unload on HR happy Matt Morris. This shouldn't even be a race. Cubs or Brewers should be 12 games over .500

still tied for first and The Cards are a game worse. Steve Traschel is proving to be worthless like I feared. Sean Marshall could have lost the same 3 games he pitched.

The Brewers get the spoil happy Pirates and the Cubs go to Houston where they have played well. They have favorable pithing match uups for the first 2 games and send a rookie out for the third to get Zambrano to face the Cards. Interesting move. Must be saving Marshall for the double header in STL.

This has to be the worst, dullest divisional race in the past 25 years. It's hard to get excited about 2 teams that keep losing and keeping the status quo. 2003 was exciting because they won and so did Houston. Plus the destroyed the Cards in a 5 game set.

Even now they are up 5-2 and it's not that exciting.

If they get the the playoffs I'll be excited. I don't expect a win but it will be fun. Every pitch in the playoffs is intense.

My "open letter to all Cubs fans":

Hello, Cubs fans. If you've seen any of my posts, you have gotten the impression that I think Cubs fans, and Chicagoans in general are loudmouthed douchebags who make up for lack of sports knowledge with sheer volume. I may also have mentioned that when you all leave your crappy state to vacation - Chicago is a FANTASTIC city, the problem is when you get out of Chi-town, you're in the world's biggest cow pasture - you come up here to the Dells, Lake Geneva, and Door County and clog up our roads; not that we don't appreciate the tourism dollars but learn to drive. It may also have appeared that I believe Sox fans, even with their criminal records, missing teeth, and fresh stitches, are the class of Chicago baseball fans because they are hard-core - they don't go to Comiskey for the scene, they go for the BASEBALL.

And really, that pretty much hits the nail on the head.

But don't get me wrong, this is no peace offering or attempt to bury the hatchet (unless it's in one of your Sosa-jersey wearing heads), this is just an entry on the beauty of the stretch run.

Look, I'm not going to argue any moral superiority for the Brewers - arguing whether the Cubs or Brewers franchise is more sad-sack over the years is pretty much six of one, half-dozen of the other. No, I'm just going to say that it's pretty freakin' awesome to be neck-and-neck down the stretch - less than 18 games to go and a mere half-game separating the two (as I type this). Win or lose, this will be an entertaining end to the season, something both teams have been notably lacking in their histories. While we can (and will) debate the relative flaws/merits of the two teams, it's their very inconsistency that really drives the excitement - either is fully capable of going 13-4 or 4-13 down the stretch.

Oh yeah, those puke Cardinals are done, thanks to the Reds giving both teams a little help and ushering LaRussa's boys out of the race. Further cause for joint celebration.

So let's continue to cuss, demean, and insult each other and enjoy the ride!

That and Sheets gave up 4 in the first. Go Reds.

77-72

tied in the loss column and up 2 in the win means the Brewers will have no days off the rest of the way.

Cubs have 3vsCincy, 3 vsPitt, 3@FLA, 3@Cincy

Brewers have 3@Hou, 4@Atl, 3vsSTL, 4vsSD

While the Cubs end on the road the Marlins game will sound like a home game as will the first 2 Reds games if not all 3.

On paper the Cubs have the edge especially if the Padres are playing for a playoff spot.

Now that both teams are winning the anxiety is starting to rise. The late innings are rough.

3 series to go. Cubs need to be up 1 going into final 4 and win 2/3 cuz I think the Brewers will split.

Glad the rotation is set even though I think Z on 3 days rest was a bad idea. Guy can be a head case + the vast majority of guys can't do it. Just glad Lily could.

Big loss for the Brewers. Now the Cubs can make a mistake and the Brewers can't.

Maholm(L) v Marquis
Van Benschoten(R) v Hill
Gorzelanny(L) v Zambrano

Cubs really need to win the first 2 because Gorz is gonna kill them.

2.5 game lead MAgic number is 6

I've seen it happen a few times. Just glad it's the other team this time.

Nice to see the Cubs can atleast kick the shit out of terrible lefties. Now the Cubs get Gorzelanny. Zambrano needs to step up against him. He couldn't Harang in 4 tries. An ace needs to win the big ones and stop with excuses.

Chi Cubs 82 73 .529 -
Milwaukee 79 75 .516 2.5

Thank you Richie Weeks. From a double play to costing them the game. Where have a heard that before?

Chris Capuano goes for the Brewers. He's sucked big time this year. Braves have 6.98 era Reyes going against him. High scoring game expected.

Cubs are hitting HR and lefties?! Zambrano actually showed up in a big game? The worm just may have turned.

Chi Cubs 83 73 .532 -
Milwaukee 79 76 .510 3.5

The Brewers cannot stumble.

If they go 7-0(doubtful), Cubs have to go 4-2 to win division
6-1, 3-3
5-2, 2-4

Florida series
Lily vs Willis(lL)
Marquis vs Barone(R)
Traschel vs Olsen(L)

Cincy
Hill vs Arroyo(R)
Z vs Harang(R)
?????

Brewers have to face Wainwright, Looper, and Pineiro
then Cassel, Maddux, Young, and Peavy if the Padres need the game.

I'm thinking the Cubs Clinch Thur or Friday at the latest.

AROD agent wants him to be a Cub
Quote:
September 23, 2007 -- A new report says Alex Rodriguez's agent has spoken to a potential new owner of the Chicago Cubs about a bank-breaking deal that could give A-Rod a cut of the team.

According to the magazine, Boras is peddling a Second City deal that could go for an average of $30 million a year over 10 seasons, with much of that cash backloaded for the 32-year-old Rodriguez - who would then be given the right to buy a chunk of the Cubs at the contract's conclusion. The report does not indicate who would pay for this proposed, precedent-setting deal.
Blurb in the Brewers thread alerted me to this. Ticket prices would go through the roof if this happens.

Meet Wrigley Alexander Fields
Quote:
His parents say he can go by his middle name when he's old enough to decide.
For now, the newborn will be known by his first name: Wrigley.

And his last name: Fields.

His parents are Paul and Teri Fields of Michigan City, Ind. They are—no surprise—fans of the Cubs, who have played at Wrigley Field since The Fields planned the name for years before their son's birth.

Wrigley Alexander Fields was born Sept. 12 at an Indiana hospital.

Cubs spokeswoman Katelyn Thrall said the name may be a first. The team has no record of other children named Wrigley, although there have been some children names Zambrano and Ryne after Cubs stars Carlos Zambrano and Ryne Sandberg.
Awesome.

Typical Cubs. Chance to just about end things in Florida and they make every Cub fan anxious. 9 straight losses to the Fish is just crazy.

A win Thursday isn't a must, but they shouldn't count on the Padres winning 2 or 3 in Milwaukee.

Why do I have the feeling the Cubs and Brewers are going to lose out? It be typical of this division. Just as the Cubs decide to take it(winning 10/12), ther decide they forgot how to pitch and get swept(again) by the Fish.

So far it's 5-1 in the 4th withe the Padres up. Brewers comitted 4 errors so far so it looks like they want the Cubs to have it.

Go Padres. Make it right for 84

Magic Number 2

Thank you Milwaukee and your 5 errors. The NLC deserves to end like this.

I'm going to pretend the Cubs/Brewers won their last 2 trimming the magic number in half.

Backing in or winning out, I want in. Can clinch tomorrow. To win the Brewers have to beat Maddux, Young, and Peavy. Tough.

N.L. Central Division Champs

A great start

Zambrano shut down the depleted Reds and the Padres helped out again.

Very strange year. Cubs never get in a hole like they were(8 games under) and win a division. The fought back and waited for the Brewers to come back to earth. Thank you Ned Yost.

It's most likely Arizona in the first rd. That of the Padres. Each have different strengths. I'll take Arizona as they have only 1 stud pitcher instead of 2. Their offense isn't great either. Still they won 90 and will be tough.

Great ending
Congratudamnlations to the Cubbies. Money really can buy division titles. I would root for them against either the DBacks or Padres though. Can't stand either of those teams.

Pulling for the Phillies out of the NL.

Maybe this year if the cubbies lose they won't blame some geek who tried to catch a foul ball. I'm just saying.

There are 15 teams that spent 87 million or more, 15 spent less. Cubs are 8th at 99.6 million. That is still alot but Cubs haven't spent that much more than the 15th team the Braves.

Money matters but they are still a ways away from the Yanks and Red Sox. I'm not denying they have a better shot because of money but there are quite a few teams who also spend.

Cubs starting line up post Division title

Theriot SS
Fontenot 2B
Murton LF
Soto C
Pie CF
Cedano 3B
Blanco 1B
Fuld RF
Hill-to pitc 3 or 4 innings

Looks like Lou doesn't want to risk any injuries. And the Cubs are up 2-0 on 2 solo shots by Murton and Cedano.

So many missed opprotunities-runner on 2nd and no out twice, not bunting with Zambrano to get Theroit over, first 3 striking out with Z on 2nd.

Wasn't expecting to beat Webb since he owns the Cubs but they had their chances.

They should be able to get more runs off Davis. They have been hitting lefties alot better lately and he isn't a top tier one.

0-2 would be really bad.

This year's blame belongs to Soriano, Lee and Ramirez-zero rbi's. They each left atleast 9 men on base in crucial situations. Lilly and Hill overthrew the ball early and cost them with walks and runs. The rest of the team sucked too. Absolutly frustrating to watch.

DeRosa, why did you swing at that 3-1 pitch when Livan was struggling? Make him pitch two strikes in a row. And the one you grounded into a DP was probably a ball.

Still some positives. Soto and Marmol(despite the playoffs) proved they can be major players in 2008. Kevin Hart should make the team as well.

The team sale and Free agency should be interesting. I think they need to make moves. Coming back with the same team would be a mistake.

They need to sign a veteran CF in case Pie isn't a go. He should have been hitting like Soto. Not a fan of left field. I don't think they can change the Murton/Floyd/Jones combo but that is a weakness.

They can go with that if they get a power hitting former 3rd basemen to play SS. Not gonna happen but if it did you can just about wrap up 90+ wins.
