Criterion does the unimaginable...

Not only is "Berlin Alexanderplatz" being prepped for a release on the heels of its recently completed restoration, but "If...", Lindsay Anderson's brilliant 1968 movie that made Malcolm McDowell an icon and began the brilliant "Mick Travis Trilogy" that would later encompass the equally spectacular "O Lucky Man!" and "Britannia Hospital" is going to come out in June.

What's makes Criterion's acquisition of "If..." so significant is that it is a title that's owned by Paramount, which, like Warner Brothers, is famously unwieldy when it comes to licensing their films to third-party DVD companies. Could this mean that we'll get Paramount titles that have been languishing for years like "Play It As It Lays"? There are rumors that WB is mulling over loosening its iron grip on its catalog, too, so we could be entering a golden period for the preeminent DVD boutique label.

The Mick Travis Trilogy arriving on DVD is so fucking badass that I can't even put it into words.

Truly amazing.

I look forward to seeing Berlin Alexanderplatz in its entirety. I also hope that the first week of July release being rumored around certain parts for "Robinson Crusoe on Mars" turns out to be true.

I have been offered a screening of BERLIN ALEXANDERPLATZ, but I would have to take two full days for it, and I just can't give up the time.

Indeed. Alexanderplatz is quite the committment. I don't even know if I can make it through Santantango. These long movies are quite the chore.

Criterion also has ACE IN THE HOLE coming - another Paramount title.

I don't know if chore is the right word. Commitment, I think, is more fitting.

Awesome. Might just go ahead and buy all three (if Britannia Hospital is in print), since WB and Criterion probably will release both If and O Lucky Man fairly closely.

If... will become my first Criterion purchase, as well.
