Excellent news.
Let's hope they make it 3 great records in a row....

Punk rock institution BAD RELIGION has set "New Maps of Hell" as the title of its follow-up to 2004's heralded "The Empire Strikes First", due on July 10 through Epitaph Records. The CD is being recorded at Grand Master Studios in Los Angeles, California with Grammy-nominated producer Joe Barresi (TOOL, QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE, WEEZER).

"New Maps of Hell" track listing:

01. New Dark Ages
02. Grains of Wrath
03. Fields of Mars
04. Germs of Perfection
05. Requiem
06. Submission Complete
07. The Grand Delusion
08. Honest Goodbye
09. Prodigal Son
10. Before You Die
11. Lost Pilgrim
12. Heroes and Martyrs
13. Dearly Beloved
14. New Chapter
15. Murder
16. 52 Seconds
17. Scrutiny

In support of the forthcoming disc, BAD RELIGION will headline the coveted main stage for the entire 2007 Vans Warped Tour this summer.

It's a waste that they're touring with Warped Tour though. I guess that's better than opening for Blink 182, which they did a couple of years ago.

This is their highest number of songs since they put 17 tracks on 1990's Against the Grain.

They probably play Warped Tour every year because they are getting older and it's an easy, guaranteed large crowd/short set that hits all the bases and they don't have to do as much of their own planning and booking.
Yeah, I mean, back when I was in high school Warped was great. You could see all your favorite punk bands give crappy performances (NOFX was drunk every time I saw them at Warped and Rancid sounded like ass).

Now though, if I'm going to spend $20 to see a bunch of crappy punk bands, I want them to at least put in some effort and something a little better than a 30 minute set.

The 2 best performances I've ever seen at a Warped Tour: Ozomatli and Cherry Poppin Daddies. Pennywise and Less Than Jake almost make the list but I've actually seen them do their own shows and they were even better than their Warped performances.

I pretty much agree with everything you said Ozo was asking people to buy their CD at the show I saw them so they could afford gas to stay on the tour. My fave performance was probably Strung Out in '97. I think my friend and I were the only ones that new their shit down here in Miami.

back to thread topic: I Hope the new BR is as good as their recent shit has been. It was getting better with every CD.
The only problem I had with The Empire Strikes First was that by the time I broke down and bought it I'd already heard the 4 best songs in various places so I was a little disappointed with the rest of the CD.

Also, I wish they could have gotten an ACTUAL performance by them on Guitar Hero.
Yeah, they chose Rancid's salvation instead....
I'd rather some Strung Out or Bad Religion. At least their guitarist are more talented.

Com'on Vader, where's your opinion?

GODDAMN IT! HERE I AM!

*fixes files*

YES, yes New Maps of Hell.

They're recording 10 feet away from my school and I can't find a goddamn way inside that studio.

I was lucky enough to get tickets to an April 6th show here in Santa Monica that theyre headlining. Sold out in 2 minutes apparently. It's them and Tiger Army.

If any of you dudes have a MySpace I'd say join the Bad Religion page. It's kept up mainly by Jay and Brooks and they often reply back and are pretty good in breaking news to people before the media outlets get it.

Fuck, Im tired. I just saw Against Me! and had Jack in the Box.

Thank you.
I hope you had tacos at Jack in the Box.

Find a way into that studio and make sure the tempos are fast enough.
I ONLY eat their tacos. I pass by the studio everyday and whimper. It's time to keep an eye at the local coffee houses/bars.
I'm fuckin hyped 'bout this new record. Hope it's better than ESF which, since it followed the phenomenal Process of Belief, was very disappointing.

I dunno, The Empire Strikes First was pretty damn good. It was fiery and angrier than Process of Belief and had a great 1-2-3-4 punch with Sinister Rouge/Social Suicide/Athiest Peace/All There Is -- plus some great creative songs like Beyond Electric Dreams and Boot Stamping on the Human Face Forever, whilst ending the record in a typical bittersweet melodic and superfast BR manner with Live Again.

I know Process has a lot of fans, and it's got Sorrow, and some other underrated tracks like The Lie, but Empire is darker and more pissed and in my mind those two albums are equal for different reasons.

Either way, they aren't spewing out bullshit like The New America anymore so we can all be pleased.
Process was great. I loved it. To be honest, it reminded me alot of Generator.

THEN! Then, came Empire which reminded me alot of Recipe For Hate. The way it plays out to me has some weird parallels to that album.

And what came after that one? Stranger Than Fiction. Fuck yes. Probably the fornt runner for my favorite BR album.

So now I'm hoping that the weird pattern continues and New Maps becomes the new BR version of Stranger Than Fiction. They've already said it's going to be less political than Empire so I'm nothing but excited.

Oh, and last night Against Me! played a couple of new tracks and goddamn it. The fact that that album doesn't have a release date pisses me off.

New song bootleg. "Heroes & Martyrs"

I was there. FUCKING AMAZING. I want to say it sounds almost a little...metal. ALMOST. Not quite.

It was the encore that night. They played their whole set in chronological order, skipping No Substance and New America, which was really fun to hear.
Glad to hear I'm not the only one whose favorite BR album is Stranger Than Fiction. They went "commercial" with that album so people usually don't want to lose some precious punk-cred by saying they love it.

The new song is pretty good but I decided The Empire Strikes First would be the last BR album I purchase. I already have fourteen and that's about enough.
Their MySpace as the two new songs up.

Honest Goodbye and Heroes & Martyrs.

I think we're in for another great album.
I'm not so sure about Honest Goodbye yet.

Granted, I did hate Boot Stamping On a Human Face Forever the first few times I heard it.

Honest Goodbye is fine, but rather worthless.
Not BAD though.

Heroes and Martyrs I love, but it's way too short.
There is another leaked track, Requiem For Dissent - and it's the best one I've heard from this album. Very "gang vox" in the chorus, catchy as hell and everything BR should be. Between this one and Heroes and Martyrs they are sounding very 1994 (in a good way), as these songs remind me of tracks like News From the Front and Leaders and Followers.

Hot Damn.
I'm telling you folks. This is the new Stranger Than Fiction.

Glad to see Milette post in here.

I love Honest Goodbye, I'm a BR fanboy and love all their songs but sometimes the slower ones do get on my nerves after a while. i.e. Struck A Nerve, Sorrow. BTW, Brett said the inspiration for that song was Capote's In Cold Blood.

Requiem for Dissent is amazing. Can't wait to see them on Warped a couple of times.

And if you guys haven't heard, theres now a String Quartet Tribute to BR. You haven't heard American Jesus until you've heard it on strings.

Not to get nit-picky Vader, but methinks Sorrow is a fast song that just has a slow song aura...

I agree though - there's only so much "Streets of America" I can take...
Yeah...I just listened to it again. Sorrow just always fools me into thinking it's a slow song.

And even with Brett back, I think Brooks Wackerman saved Bad Religion. Since he joined the drumming has revived Bad Religion. But yes, Mr Brett's lyrics also helped. Alot.
Having not listened to anything BR has done since Recipe For Hate most of the touchstones in this thread are lost on me. If nothing else, reading it has prompted me to break out Suffer for the first time in a year, which is always a welcome blast.

I can agree that Brooks (with Brett) saved BR. The New America was horrible and Bobby Shayer's drumming just got them in a funk of dull. He literally played the exact same drum parts on dozens and dozens of songs.

I am pleased to hear you might dig out Suffer, Russ.
Their last two albums, The Process of Belief and The Empire Strikes First are GREAT albums (by BR standards) and I think can almost stand alongside the best of their catalog (Suffer, Against the Grain, Stranger Than Fiction).

I am always excited when they release a new collection of songs and that time is now.
Dude, if you haven't at the very least heard Stranger than Fiction then you're missing some of the best stuff BR's ever done.

I'm completely loving Heroes & Martyrs. Nice to see BR's back to doing songs that don't even reach 2 minutes. Those were always the best.

Pick up Stranger than Fiction, it's worth a purchase. You can safely ignore The Gray Race (even though I like it, it's not a very popular one), No Substance and The New America. Process of Belief was a return to form, and at times feels a lot like Against the Grain, which is probably their best album. The Empire Strikes First, save for one part, is almost completely fantastic.

What part, the rap?
Yeah, Sage Francis almost kills that song for me.

Which sucks, because I think without that bit, "Let Them Eat War" might've been their best track since "American Jesus".

There's a few seconds of yet another new song in this, the first of Epitaph's New Maps "Webisodes"

You're gonna get burned out by the time the album's released, Captain Can't Wait.

Thanks for the recommendations. Borrowed Stranger and Empire from a friend this evening; will hopefully get to them tomorrow.
This evening? Listen tomorrow?!

No, sit the fuck down and lose 2 hours of sleep listening to these first.

NOW, RUSS!
Aww.

You scared him off, Vader.
Goddamn it, someone had to do it.
I heard it. All.

Holy. Shit.

Edit: Upon the second hearing I'm declaring this better than Empire. Better than Process.

And if you had doubts of those two previous albums possibly standing alongside the classic ones, this one stands there proudly and assertively.
That is some great news to hear.

Torrents can bring Xmas and Birthdays much much earlier.
When is the actual release date for this?
July 10th
Might as well just wait, then.
Yeah, the artwork on the booklet and even the disk is wonderful. Who doesnt want a giant crossbuster spinning in their CD players?
Just saw the old guys tonite at a secret show before Warped Tour kicks off. It was being recorded for a possible future DVD I guess. In HD too. Now you can see the age on their faces in crisp 1080p.

But they sounded great and I get to see them three more times this summer. Radical.
Dude, I'm so jealous. The only punk band I've ever seen live is Lagwagon. Seeing as they're the only ones who've come to this useless country. But if Mohammed won't come to the mountain... I'm planning a trip maybe next year to coincide with Warped Tour. Which reminds me, any particular venue recommendations?

Also, anybody get the new Strung Out yet? Got it yesterday, and it's fucking amazing. It's been a good couple of weeks for punk music.
If you can catch a west coast date, it'd be best. I believe lots of midwest and east coast shows are sometimes held indoors. Warped Tour is to be enjoyed outdoors in the heat.

The only problem I see is that sometimes Warped tour really really sucks. This year is such an exception with a great lineup to begin and end the tour. I get to see Bad Religion, Pennywise, Alkaline Trio, and Circle Jerks?! For 40 Bucks?! C'mon. That's a deal.

Next year....I dunno. I just can't wait to see my geeky face immortalized on a Bad Religion DVD.

The album is on their MySpace page for those who don't torrent thingys. It's a really good album, not as dark as Empire, but more consistant. More aggressive and unique than Process. I have only heard it twice, so I don't quite know what to think, but it's gonna be the record of my summer.
It's a lot more metal than I was expecting. I like it.
It's even a little.....epic, no?
Thread Starter
It doesn't sound as "epic" as Empire to me -- whereas that album had songs like Overture, Beyond Electric Dreams, and Boot Stamping... - it seemed like they were going for something grand, new and slightly artsy. New Maps seems like a straight-up punk throwback. Both 52 Seconds, and Murder are hardcore throwbacks to Can't Stop It from Process and some of the faster early tunes.
Most of the album sounds like multiple oozin-ahhh slathered standard fast BR songs in the syle of Against the Grain and Stranger Than Fiction, with a little added edge of energy that they haven't alway shown in the last 10 years....but I don't hear much growth, or difference here besides them writing an amazing and consistant album and continuing to be a great aging legendary band.
