Just picked the game up for my 360. Can't wait to check it out!

Oh God it's wonderful.

The driving is tougher, definitely, but so fucking rewarding when you start to get the hang of it. The speed is ludircous when you get a bit of road in front of you. Man, there is so much to love already, and I only clocked 2 or 3 hours this evening. The lighting. Fuck. It is outrageously good.
I played for about four hours this morning before I went to work, and while the driving was difficult for the first hour or so, it's a breeze at this point. The same has been true with every platform GTA game; taxis and cop cars are the best, most reliable modes of transportation whilst driving.

I'm going to hop on multiplayer tonight to see what all the hoopla is about, but if no one is on I'll probably just go back to Niko's Bad Ass Revenge Extravaganza.

Racism and Eugenics Inc. aside, GTA IV is a great game!

I can't even find Multiplayer.

So far, I've been playing up to Vlad's levels. But, I'm willing to take any PS3 Chewers on in the next hour or so.

I was surprised to find my copy of GTA IV (PS3) waiting for me when I got home today. Amazon must have shipped them out en masse... As I mentioned earlier I ordered it on friday last week and did the free shipping, expecting to get it by the end of the week if not later, and I still ended up getting it on day one. Sweet. I tinkered with it for a bit, but I really haven't dove into it yet. Bought some clothes, met some girl named Michelle... Got the cell phone, blah blah. So far, so good... but I did go back and play a bit more Call of Duty 4 to take advantage of the double xp. COD 4 was strong enough to lure me away from GTA IV. Wow! Really looking forward to tooling around Liberty City though and I'm gonna dig through the thread(s) to get some of the impressions you guys have.

How I read this: after playing four hours of GTA IV, I found it difficult to restrain myself from driving like a maniac and hitting pedestrians during my morning commute.

I'm grabbing my 360 copy tomorrow, but I'm busy, so I won't be able to fire it up until Friday.

Yeah, right.

No, it's a retail copy, and the problems are now being harped on across GTA boards (it's also been mentioned in articles from the likes of IGN and 1up). The game has minimal pop-up (invisible objects slow to load), but intermittent pop-in (bland placeholder textures that load as you get close). Apparently the PS3 version seems to has less problems in this area, but is slightly weaker graphically speaking.

My real problem is the console -- I'll get through the long opening load and then it will freeze, give me the "unreadable disc" error. Sometimes I have to insert, start up, eject, insert, restart, eject, and reinsert before it actually works (kind of like my penis when having drunken sex).

Is there any way to change the in-vehicle analog camera controls without effecting the on-foot analog camera controls?
Every one of the 26 people online on my buddy list is playing this right now. Amazon was supposed to have it to my door today and failed. I hate you all.

(edit- and I have no idea where that question mark came from.)
Sorry to the people who wanted to play multi -- next time I'll be down, but a few of you hit me up right as my eyes were going into full blur mode.

Things I love: the physics. At first I was disappointed by the lack of apparent jumps, but after pulling natural air from a hilly street, landing on top of another car and then spinning off into some pedestrians, yeah, I'm ok with it.

And the stunt jumps (the few I've found) are pretty great.

Shooting pigeons: nice. So too is bumping into a pedestrian in the morning and knocking his coffee to the ground. I feel like Louis C.K.

I'm not sure how I managed to be productive during the 16 hours I spent on campus today with this waiting for me at home. But now we're reunited.

A coworker told me about an hour ago that my eyes are blood red (likely due to my lack of sleep last night), so I stopped at the store and picked up a 64 ounce gatorade and some pop tarts. I'm ready to go.
May the Pop-Tarts keep your eyes from bursting from your head, brother.

Now if only my actual brother keeping me from the damned game. Fratricide time, Cain style.

Sorry mediumdave for not accepting your invite. Just got home from work and managed to nudge the wife off the couch...I felt like getting into the game a bit before hopping online.

It's pretty weird to be a couple of hours in and still no gun or knife in my inventory.

Got it yesterday and I’m already blown away. I spent an hour and a half doing pretty much nothing except wandering around and being amazed at the detail and the depth of things you can do.

It must be a good game because even my game hating fiancé wanted play for a bit - and yes she loved it.

That's always satisfying.

I didn't notice it until I knocked out a street light on a rainy night, the road around me going dark. Only then did I realize just how many dynamic lighting sources I was surrounded by. The early morning sunrises should be noted, as well - this is the first console GTA game that doesn't make me feel like I'm actively working against the lighting.

I'm just amazed by how much detail went into this game. When you fail a mission, you'll hear entirely new dialogue on your way back to attempt it again. No two buildings look alike, and earlier I found myself completely thrown off when I tried to track down a target only to realize that I had wandered into the apartment building adjacent to the one he was in!

I know Rockstar North has a large team of artists and programmers whose sole job is to work on these games for years on end, but I really can't comprehend how it was possible for them to cram this much into one DVD. Imagine all the man-hours that must have gone into making this game. It's a really stunning achievement.
On the Sixaxis tutorial (there might be something similar for the 360 version) when you fly the helicopter, you really can't help but appreciate the improved draw distance and quality of the water effects this time around too.

It's almost a shame they didn't put the same amount of attention into the cutscene's visual quality - instead of just putting a filter over them.

No but she did steal a car and drive round looking for scooters to ram - because in her words "They piss me off." - Bless her.

Driving around at night, in the fog and seeing the lights on the bridge in the distance was impressive as hell.

Any game company worth it's salt needs to look long and hard at GTA IV and then ask themselves, "Do we love our game that much? Are we that dedicated to making a product?" The presentation, the loading directly to your last saved game, the manual that's done "in game", the EXCELLENT and LIKABLE playable character...Rockstar loves GTA and it shows. Now, I'm not saying every game needs to have a manual that shows you the sights of the game in character. But it adds to the experience. Not every game needs a protagonist who isn't a complete fucking, whiny, lame, feather-haired, steroid-abusing, generic douchebag...wait, they do. Wake the fuck up, game companies, and look at your new Bible.

Except for controls and saving and some minor quibbles. BUT other than that...

I found the driving a massive pain in the arse at first. However I've found that if you weigh on the anchors as you are coming up to a turn then let go of the gas and brake, turn into the corner, then back on the gas, you should get a nice drift going while still getting around the corner. Works in most cars I've tried

Oh and never use the handbrake except for 180's
post #1077 of 1991
Also, love the way if you get into a foot chase and you sprint through a big crowd of people, Niko will push them out of the way in loads of different ways, the people will fall over, or stumble, or drop their newspaper, or their hat will fall off and so on

Just incredible...

I've found a tap of the handbrake is excellent if you want to slide around the corner. It's all a matter of balance and restraint - you can't hammer the controls anymore.

Sorry to schlonk for not accepting the invite, I was dead tired and wanted to get a feel for the game, especially driving. Still haven't gotten used to it, but damn if I'm not a better driver than I am a bowler.

Great game!

Yeah, I needled you for that before and I apologize, it sounded like your copy "fell off a truck". I noticed it on my retail copy too last night--no instances of me crashing into invisible objects, but definitely some noticeable texture loading. More disappointing to me is this weird shimmer to distant objects and shadows that just seems to ugly up the scenery for me on the 360. My game also froze twenty minutes in, so I don't know if my system is having issues with it or these little things are more noticeable to some than others.
Okay folks, I just got my copy last night and haven't played it yet (it was a present for myself for getting through exams, and my last exam was last night), so what should I look for first in terms of multi-player action?

I have a feeling this thing will take over my life.
That was wonderful. The PS3 version doesn't seem to suffer any of the popping artifacts, and looks mind-bogglingly great on my SXRD. You all had me extra worried about the car physics, but I found myself getting used to them pretty quickly, although it sucks that your opponents have no problem stopping on dimes.

Stuff I don't like? Well, like all GTA games, traveling on foot still feels a little floaty and wonky. I'm still not 100% sold on the combat, but I'm sure I'll get used to it. I haven't fired a gun yet, so I doubt I'll be using melee for much anyway. Also: Do the entertainment places (cabaret, bar, etc) only open up if you have a companion?

I played through up until "go out and get food with Roman," during which Roman and I got drunk and tried to break into Algonquin. Not wise.

The radio stations are all I'd hoped they'd be. The lunatic ramblings of The Journey's HAL were great.

I'm sad to see my old tactic of driving as fast as I possibly could and handbraking around every turn is now useless. I share the opinion of most everyone that the driving will take some getting used to. Still, even though I only played for 2 hours or so, I'm really enjoying everything. The levels of detail are amazing, there's some surprising music in there, and the combat (even though I've only done melee) seems to be far and away the best of the series.

Does Neko walk a little funny, or is it just me? It seems like the control is a little, I don't know, wobbly? It took some adjusting.

Oh, and that fucking beer commercial is hilarious.

He limps if he runs down some stairs. I have a feeling that's going to be something revealed from his past later on.

Just set up my Live account last night and I immediately hated the name I chose (Nom de Kaboom, a name too clever by about 1/8th), but since I have no idea how to work invites and all this stuff yet, someone keep an eye out for me over the weekend so I can join in on the mayhem.
I felt like such an ass that first Cops and Crooks match.

My very first online match, I get stuck being the Boss, within a minute of the round starting the cops are absolutely raining bullets at everything and everyone around me. I hop in the first car I see and speed off with reckless abandon, trying to keep an eye on the minimap while soaring down the street dodging cops. Oh a bridge, I'll take that. Oh, the bridge isn't complete, I'll just jump that little spot. Oh, my car sucks and didn't make the gap, I'm falling into the motherfucking ocean. Doh!

That last deathmatch round was great though. My Korean chick kept stealing cop cars and smashing into all the players I could find, and occasionally eating a bullet to the head through the windshield.
I just sent out a bunch of friend requests for this. I'll probably be playing the multiplayer a fair bit this weekend (but mostly single player in the evenings today and tomorrow).

Really? I haven't felt anything like that. My death count is already past 100 - much of that was done with the knife. In RL I'm a nice guy, but I'm always a bastard when given the option in games. Like in Bioshock - I don't even know what it looks like when you spare a little sister - I harvested each and every one of those freaky chicks without blinking. The pedestrians in GTA aren't real. I hope they brought the flamethrower and chainsaw back.
