Now that would be interesting. What if they did three different main characters and three different big cities. Like they have this russain guy in NYClone Liberty City. Then they have a Japanese Mafia guy in a Tokyo like city. Then maybe a British thug in a London like city. You play through the game as one of these characters and they have intersecting moments. Then you can restart as one of the other characters.

Well that was entirely underwhelming.

The GTA series is pretty much critic proof at this point, and everyone is all a flutter over a Russian being the main character, but did this trailer really deserve all this hype?

I say no. The city has a nice more realistic sheen to it, but even the graphics don't wow me too much.

It's a teaser trailer, and I'm just glad that GTA3 engine is a thing of the past now. Let's try to remember that there's still a lot (or really nothing) we don't know about this game. So take it easy...don't be picky.

Agreed. Half-hour infomercial slots to advertise that?

Same here. Some of the best parts of the GTA games were always the in-jokes using the voice talent.

These guys have definitely seen Koyaanisqatsi.

Wow! They have buildings!

What were you expecting? Full disclosure 7 months before the game is supposed to come out?
I dunno, I just watched it again, looks pretty fucking sweet to me. The lighting is spectacular, it's an exact replica of NY, and there looks to be some serious life moving through the streets. Color me excited.
Anyone know if the guy doing the voice is anybody special? I was wondering who they were going to get for this one.
Looking forward to the possible chance to climb up the Empire State Building ALA King Kong.
and then piledrive all the way down ala Spider-Man 2

No, but I do think that the way they hyped an advertisement is pretty funny. Especially since it's essentially just a few buildings (which are pretty, I might add) and a few lines which reveal nothing about the game.

Corporate advertising my friend...corporate adverstising. GTA is hand down the biggest game ever on the Playstation console. In terms of sales and popularity...and controversy.

Actually, in my estimation, october, 7 months, is NOT that far away. If this teaser was released say october of last year, then maybe it would have passed, but this shit, when you are almost 6 months away from releasing this game? That is a huge cock tease.

LOL...a huge cock tease?

Somebody else said (and I agree) information is going to come out like rushing water now. You're going to see the usual Gamepro, etc. 5 page preview probably within the next two issues detailing more of the game. We'll probably get the full trailer this summer or right before. Don't worry, I'm actually glad they didn't release this too soon...because then the anticipation gets drawn out and people become restless.

Doesn't Fazer hate GTA anyway?
yea i do.

but i still wanted to be impressed with this.

oh well, I guess I will wait for the "exclusive" hands-on preview in the upcoming [insert gaming mag] to be scanned onto the internets.
A few observations:

-- The graphics are awe-inspiring. I don't know any regular GTA players who expected this level of improvement. The first game in the series that looks to be legitimately beautiful.
-- A modern time frame is the right move.
-- Russian mob? Sounds good. After one viewing though, I know more than a few people (myself included) who thought he could possibly be from the Middle East. If Rockstar had Jupiter-sized balls, this game would be a $60 international incident. Still, I expect a healthy dose of post-9/11 satire.
-- My love for the QUATSI series has been reaffirmed.
-- If the teaser showcased anything, it was how retarded in love with this game I'm going to be when I fly an Apache into Times Square and start handing out daisies...made of fire.

While it looks good (and honestly, who's surprised that it does?), I'll have to admit that I'm a little bummed that they're not following Saints Row's lead in letting you design your character. I understand they want you to play through a story, but their stories have never been that great to begin.

Did you play San Andreas all the way through? The story may have been simple, but the execution was damn near flawless. And while the customization possible on CJ was great, I wouldn't change that character's personality for anything.
Eh, it looks good, but not great or anything. The trailer did have a kind of hype behind it that's usually reserved for Apple products, so while it's not like they promised that all would be revealed, it's still a bit disappointing that it wasn't. I'll wait for more details before I get excited.
Did you see THAT city? I'm sure it was plenty of work for them to create one, i wouldn't be getting our hopes up for multiple cities. Now if they can deliver a fresh experience with those graphics then that'll probably be all i need.

Exactly. And that was by far the longest game I ever played through multiple times, and there's no way I would have done that if the story weren't that good.

Are you the writer of Little Miss Sunshine? (Sorry, that was mean on multiple levels, but I couldn't resist)

I also felt a bit let down, but that was due solely to the marketing. It was just a teaser, but it certainly didn't hint at anything to indicate that "Things will be different".
I thought the trailer delivered exactly what it should- here's the city, here's who you're playing as, here's how the graphics look. I think people expecting anything else from Rockstar at this point were just setting themselves up for disappointment.

Assuming it's Liberty City, it looks like a major revamp from III and LCS. I'm excited for it.
when has Rockstar not upped the ante for the GTA series, you know we're gonna start shitting ourselves once the details start rolling out.
As has been mentioned before, Koyaanisqatsi reference!

The graphics look fantastic in that trailer, just really solid and beautifully designed. I like that they've kept the almost comic book stylisation that was in GTA III, VC and SA.
I'm glad it's up on the Live Marketplace, it just looks so much better large in HD.

Rockstar is back. I love it.

GTA has dabbled in Russian mobsters before, it was only a matter of time before they got main billing. they're notoriously meaner than the Italians too, which should give Rockstar plenty to run with. here's to Kalashnikovs, shady ex-KGB types, and Red Dawn references.

I must have this video game. Can't wait to find out more about the voice cast.
For some reason every time I hear the guys voice, I get this "Teddy KGB" type of vibe.

I'm so glad it's not the mute from GTA III
post #181 of 1991
I hope and I pray with fingers crossed that they don't wuss out on certain gameplay elements related to 9/11 Lieberman hysteria or other things.
*cough* flying airliner around financial district *cough*

It certainly looks like it's a littler smaller than San Andreas. The city will probably be 2 times the size of GTAIII but only one city with surrounding brooklyn, bronx and so on. Here is hope that the terrain will still be somewhat varied like in San Andreas...loved crusing on the interstate highways doing stunts in the wildness.
And i really hope they don't cut back on cool stuff like the gym, eating, piloting.

Rumor has it, that one mini-game is to play some sort of Rollercoaster Tycoon and manage an amusement park with all kinds of stuff.

Here

Dammit. Guess I'll have to take a trip to Gamestop if I want to read that. No way am I buying that crappy mag.
If you're part of the Russian Mob, I hope to God Mike Toreno from San Andreas is back. He was, by far, my favorite SA character.
So will there be any Gorky Park on the soundtrack?
I got 20 bucks says

and

will be in the voice cast.

Rabe and Stormare are the Eastern European go to guys.
"In Soviet Russia...."

I wonder how many times I'll say that.
I'm just looking forward to seeing what Rockstar can do with the graphics with the X Box 360. Please tell me that hands in the game will resemble humans and not Rockem-Sockem robots this time around. Being set in Liberty City is a bit of a let down, but like everyone else, as long as you can travel to other cities it wouldnt be such a big deal. Be nice to fly down to Vice City and stir up some shit as well. Looking forward to the release of this one Big Time!

It's true, police don't ever seem to carry cash. God knows I've beat enough to death with a baseball bat.

(Wow, this thread is bringing out a mean streak in me. Think I'll blame it on playing GTA....)

Ditto on that. Oddly enough, it seems everytime I beat up a hobo on GTA III I get around 300 bucks. Go Figure

A shot by shot analysis of the trailer, very interesting

I was blissfully ignorant of all the hype around this game (I only knew it was in development and that it would be an Xbox 360 game), so I watched the preview without any expectations. I liked it. I think going back to Liberty City is fine; New York City has a rich history, it's huge, and it has an incredibly diverse population.

As for being smaller than San Andreas, I'm not so sure. For one thing, we don't know if Liberty City is the only setting for the game. For another, each game in the GTA III series had more complex cityscapes. The cities themselves got larger in every game. If GTA IV is an accurate representation of NYC, it'll be huge. Visit NYC some time and you'll see what I mean.
With both the Brooklyn Bridge and the Staten Island Ferry in the trailer, it's safe to assume all 5 boroughs are represented. Which is EASILY the size of San Andreas.

So, no Staten Island, but a section of Jersey? Nice.

If there isn't a mission that involves dumping bodies in the Meadowlands, I will be very disappointed.

Everything else in that article makes me extremely happy. Unless you own a PS3.
