Gta Iv - Page 40

It's something we'll always disagree on, and I respect that - but it's very easy to overlook the flaws on the game if you're willing to accept that Rockstar succeeded in creating something that felt real. Yet it never felt real, except in the way that reality doesn't reward success at such a low level - which in a game, is hardly enticing.

I genuinely think the artistry involved is limited to the characters alone - and since they're involved in a plot that never sucked me in, made me perform scripted missions with badly playtested physics, such lacklustre gunplay and rewarding all this with something that never really worked for me in the first place - another portion of a dull looking, realistically designed - but ultimately boring city.

That aside, because that's my stance on the whole issue - a mission pack involving bikers within the same region, using the same engine to do what I suspect will be the same missions with different characters - just doesn't inspire me.

The thought of all this being transplanted to Tokyo is the same depressing feeling. New engine, fresh start - create a truly new experience. The last one wasn't it.

As for the multiplayer - the appeal wore off quick. Even with the right people, the engine bogged everything down. Planting it in the city itself was lazy, they needed custom levels for the experience depending on quantity of players, not an isolated area.

The co-op had potential. Shame it wasn't more randomized.

I dont have it in me to get terribly involved in this cockfight, but I side with Spike. The hype was overwhelming, but doesn't ruin how immersed I was in that game, that story, that city the entire time I played, and the myriad flaws I perceived weren't nearly enough to change that.
I've been a detractor for a while now, but even I wouldn't have called the experience "awful". For a game with that many problems, it's still no understatement to call it a massive achievement.

A boring game is the ultimate failure in my eyes.

If i'd have wanted broken and ambitious, i'd have played STALKER again. At least it effortlessly created an immersive and fun environment.

Even if GTA IV detractors, like me, admit that the first 8-12 hours were really compelling. Then you start repeating stuff ... and the awesome world begins to lose its luster as you drive through it again, and again ...

There is this for those who want Tokyo.

Is that what GTA II was like? Never played any before III.

Chinatown

GTA2:

They certainly look similar. Have no idea about the mechanics though.
It looks more like the original GTA for the Pc.

I've played all of them, the first one was incredibly fun and so ludicrous. The second one was basically the same game, but with slightly better graphics (use of 3D acceleration and lighting).

Then GTA III hit and everything changed.
That first photo Bees?! posted is from the GBA GTA(whatever it was called), if I'm not mistaken.

GTA2 was the first of the series I ever played, and the humor is much more in your face. I loved that game, not sure if I could go back to it even if I wanted to though. Call it Resident Evil syndrome. After 4, it's just damn hard to go back.

Chinatown Wars is kind of a 2D/3D hybrid it looks like, probably with some camera control as well...
Shitty scans of screenshots here.

I adored the first two GTA games (and the London "expansion"), but I can't see playing Chinatown. The top down style just doesn't hold up. I tried a couple years back to break out GTA: London, and it felt really unwieldy. And after playing tha GTA PSP games I'm spoiled on a good portable GTA.

I ask for one thing from the guys at Rockstar. Let us unlock some crazy ass cheats once we complete the game.

Some of the best times I had on my PS2 were after I completed San Andreas and just played CJ as a billionaire mass murderer with a flying car.

That's what makes the replay value of these games so high, even after you complete the main story there is plenty of time to be wasted creating a fucked up version of the game's universe in your head.

Give me flying cars and let me be an indestructible God of vengeance, dammit.

Oh, and GTAV? Make it as sprawling as SA.

Other than that I still love replaying GTAIV because Niko is one of the few fully realized characters in gaming.

Sprawl is good. San Andreas has so many places to go. I still turn it on when I just want to TRAVEL. Get in my stunt plane and barn-storm. There's no GLEE in GTA 4, no whimsy. Just work. Lovely, but boring work.

Edge has these. Does look like mine was a GTA GB screenshot, apologies for that - cheers for the point out.

Isometric does look a little more ideal, the important thing is that the framerate is solid. That was an issue with GTA2 on the gameboy color, as well as the rubbish size of everything.

EDIT:

http://www.edge-online.com/magazine/...-up?page=0%2C0

The article's filled with fascinating ideas - like minigames to fill molotovs up in petrol stations using the stylus.

This is what I love about the series. Trying new fun concepts.

One thing I missed from SA, was the ability to take photos and have them on the HD. I must have had about 300+ photos from the adventures I had post credits roll.

It doesn't even look spectacular, it handles badly and the multiplayer concepts that everyone was so excited about? Hidden amongst poor design decisions.

I wouldn't even class it as a "must-play" game. San Andreas - stereotypes aside, was better.
Can't disagree more...Seeing as how every single thing you said I felt completely the opposite about. The only complaints I have about the game is that dating anyone but the lawyer was a waste of time and you couldn't do the activities while online. It would have been fun to be able to do EVERYTHING you could do in game while playing free mode.

I especially thought it looked spectacular. Amazing graphics given the scope and detail of the world they were in.

None of those things were overlooked considering how many Game of the Year awards it's received. These people that you claim to have overlooked those things, sat back, 9 months later and after a host of great games came out, they still, much like me, think it was the best game they played in 2008.

No they haven't. The ones that overlooked GTA4's flaws initially have rather sensibly picked Fallout 3 as their GOTY.

Immersive, beautiful - flawed but fun.

I'm glad you enjoyed GTA4 though, i'm pretty sure that was Rockstar's intention when they made started the series.

This talk of GTA2 has certainly brought back fond memories of how the series did multiplayer right.

How can you sensibly pick GOTY?

Burnout: Paradise is probably GOTY for fun and lasting appeal.
GTA IV is probably GOTY for writing and artistic merit.
Fallout 3 is probably GOTY for the world.
Little Big Planet is probably GOTY for creativity and artistic desing
Metal Gear Solid 4 (my pick) is probably GOTY for polish, gameplay mechanics, and story.

It's so arbitrary among different genres. I mean you not liking GTA IV doesn't make it a bad game. Most of my friends loved it. That doesn't make it GOTY either.

By picking the most entertaining game of last year.

It was Fallout 3. Hell, it's still entertaining now.

My opinion of GTA 4 has no effect on the build quality or experience - I haven't implied otherwise.

DOn't see why not, when it was first announced I think they mentioned some new online stuff to do, hopefully something biker gang related with a bunch of you highjacking some cargo trucks (one can dream)

Lost and the Damned will rock my balls.

They re-worked the motorcycles! Thank fuck.

Really? So sites and mags like Giant Bomb, Kotaku, Gametrailers, Game Informer, Time Magazine to name a but a few haven't? A lot of places have named it Game of the Year over Fallout 3...Taking nothing away from Fallout 3, mind you...

I loved the MP in IV so I guess that means they did something right...
with the exception of multiplayer i havent felt the need to revist GTA4 since I beat it.

However I did just buy a second hand copy of San Andrias and I'm loving the hell out of it. It's just way more fun to play.

Wow, I had no idea that The Lost and the Damned was so close to release. It comes out on February 17th (the same day as Street Fighter IV).

I am going to be very busy that day.

Speaking of "The Lost and the Damned"...

IMO Fallout 3 is just as flawed and overhyped as GTA IV.
Personal opinion's always going to be the final say on most things no matter what.

Technically, Fallout 3 probably has substantially more flaws. GTA 4 never crashed my console. But the core gameplay of Fallout - ending aside, was far more engrossing for me. That's the kicker - if you have time to put into it, Fallout 3 rewards the player far more than GTA4.

If you hate the engine though, either game is essentially useless.

Multiplayer modes for Lost and the Damned

Sweeeeet.
Witness protection and chopper versus chopper sound fantastic. I hope they work as well in action as they look on paper.
I bumped the other thread for this but I'll do it here as well. Both DLC packs are coming to the PS3 and PC this March according to the email Rockstar just sent out.
Sweet, maybe I'll just pick up Episodes for PS3.
They're definitely worth it.
The Ballad of Gay Tony is my 2nd favourite game from last year. I'm not sure how I feel about the Lost and the Damned, I love the actual missions and tone of the game, but it feels awfully rushed and not particularly fun. What makes Gay Tony work is that it's something of a tonal shift from vanilla GTA whilst Lost and Damned has that same sort of bleakness to it.
They're both great. I favor the characters and story of TLAD, but Gay Tony is the better game.
Usually I prefer playing PC to console but I've heard bad things about GTA IV on PC. I hope Rockstar's ironed things out a bit for this release.

good coment but i do not understand your idea.

Anyone want to team up on XBL tonight?

I'm better at shooting than driving, but good at helicopters

EDIT IMHO we should fight in a copter!!

I've only got the disc of Episodes from Liberty City (Lost and the Damned/Ballad of Gay Tony) handy, lent my copy of GTA4.
