Agreed. However, that may not be all that great. San Andreas was such an open world experience that it made so difficult to cover and explore so much terrain. Also, it was a bit of wasted space between the cities (Los Santos, San Fiero, Las Ventures). There really wasn't much to do between said cities.

I highly doubt that will be a problem in Liberty City.

EA must be stopped. They must be stopped!!!
The entire EA taking over Take Two has gone way overboard. EA had built a lot of goodwill with the gaming community the past few months, and they blew it all in half the time. I was already fearing the loss of the 2K series of sports games (which were/are all infinitely better than the EA series), and the possible yearly whoring of GTA...but go and fuck with my release date and I'm going to be extremely pissed.

You would think Ubisoft might step in and tell Take Two/Rockstar "hey we can protect you, EA tried this shit with us. Team with us and let's take the cocksuckers down"
If EA were to do this, they would definitely be forever branded as the evil Empire of the gaming world. Unfortunately, that would probably matter littel in the long run.
The quote comes from an analyst saying EA *might* have incentive to delay the game should they actually buy out Take Two before the 29th.

Rest your sphincters.
Keep in mind, too, that this prediction was made during a taping of GameTrailers TV's Bonus Round show which was taped about a month ago but only just recently released. The game has already gone gold and preparations are likely well under way to get it into stores.
Yeah, I realized that once I saw the video. Once I stopped being reactionary I remembered that there's little chance the hostile takeover would be completed by the 29th anyway/
post #409 of 1991
The end of the month seems so far away.
EA still must be stopped though.

Guess Im not cut up for the crime simulator thing.
I never finished any of them either, but mostly because each one had at least half a dozen missions that were unplayable messes with no save points.

I dunno, a lot of the GTA crowd is also the Madden crowd. If EA forced an unnecessary delay on GTA4 and ALL of the GTA crowd was made to understand that EA did it just to make money later in the year, they may see a sizable backlash come Madden season.

Of course it'll never happen, because while EA is a bunch of douchebags they are NOT mentally retarded.
I am so confused as to why EA would think GTAIV would make appreciably more money in November. It's not as though it's a new franchise people would take a flier on because it's holiday season: isn't 95+% of the audience going to buy it no matter when it comes out?

Even if it would sell marginally more copies later in the year, I'm not so sure the interest they'd make over the intervening sixth months wouldn't eclipse the cash generated from the extra sales.
Plus, let's spread the wealth out a bit! If we have another 4 months like the tail end of '07 with every decent or seemingly decent game coming out within weeks of each other, most chaps would go broke.
Where are you guys getting this info on EA (if they took over) wanting to push back GTA IV?
Video Game analyst Michael Pachter threw it out in an interview I saw linked to on joystiq.
It just won't happen. Rockstar have too much to lose - their share prices already took a terrible hit after the last delay. Another will destroy the company. They can't run on fumes until later this year.
so where's the best place to preorder this thing (i.e. free goodies/most likely to have it first day)?
I ordered mine on Amazon. They also had a pre-order bonus for the GTA4:SE last week with free next day shipping, not sure if that is still on. I haven't heard any other bonuses yet.
I'm not going to preorder it anywhere where I have to wait for it to ship from. I want to be able to play it that weekend and help crash Xbox Live/PSN like back when Halo 3 came out.

Best Buy is giving out a crappy free poster but besides that I haven't really heard of any preorder offers.
I dunno if you'll be crashing any networks with it? I'm not entirely sure how the XBL system works, but I imagine hosting will be done by gamers themselves - much like in past iterations. I don't think there will be centralised official rockstar servers going on like with Call of Duty etc.
If you had been on Xbox Live the first weekend when Halo 3 came out, you'd know how flaky it gets when that many people are going online simultaneously even if it's all peer to peer traffic. GTA isn't as much an online game so it probably won't have quite the same effect (especially potentially being split over multiple platforms) but it could still happen.
Remember when Best Buy and some of the other big box stores would have themed faceplates as the pre-order/first week bonuses? What happened to those?

Anyway, I just realized I'm going to be out of town the week this is released. I'd consider pre-ordering if I didn't think every store in creation wasn't going to have 14 million copies of the game in stock.
Two bucks says there will be footage on youtube within minuts of release showing morons/assholes/jagoffs buying the game and trashing it.

I never understood the reason to do that. I mean what a waste of cash.

Fourteen million? So they're expecting a shortage, then?

You get a license plate if you preorder the big bundle from Amazon. I think Target has some in-store deal for a free skin.

Speaking for Amazon, I'll more than likely have it on the 29th just like everyone else. Other big releases I have ordered from Amazon have always shown up the day they were due in stores. Having Prime helps as well, since next day shipping is only $3.
Well, I've signed up for a free trial of Prime (but won't be willing to pay the $80 a year or whatever for regular) and I think it'll expire before GTAIV comes out. I'll most likely just pick up one of the zillions of copies at Best Buy. My disdain for Collectors Editions of games continues though.

I don't either. I can appreciate it with maybe a Uwe Boll or Michael Bay film. Or a pokemon game maybe.

But why a respected franchise?
Some gaming sites put up articles today with hands-on multiplayer impressions, as well as screenshots. Nothing spectacular, but I rather liked this and this.
Those screenshots make me think this multiplayer is going to stop me playing call of duty. Fullstop. The helicopter one suggests quite a lot of potential.
Damn, it, this is going to force me to renew my Live Gold membership, isn't it?
Knife fight on a steel girder! YES YES YES.
I loved the description off IGN where you fire an RPG at your friends feet and launch them onto a building, fucking eh!
I don't really care about this game, but thought you guys would like this announcement of 4 more multiplayer modes:

Quote:
The newly announced modes are as follows, as described by Rockstar.com:

Team Mafiya Work (2-8 Teams)
You're a member of a crew doing contract work for the mafiya - including such plum gigs as escorting wanted men, picking up MacGuffins and stealing cars. Work as a team to complete contracts before the time period ends and get the rewards. You'll probably want to do your best to scupper the other crew's hard work as well. Each contract you complete gives your team cash, and the crew with the most cash at the end of the round wins.

Team Car Jack City (2-8 Teams)
Cars spawn parked around the map and the teams must steal them and take them to a drop off point. The cash teams get for dropping off stolen vehicles depends on their condition - teams get less cash the more damaged they are. The exception to this are special bonus cars, stuffed with drugs, which give a set amount of cash on delivery no matter how damaged they are. Your crew has to get hold of whatever vehicles the boss wants. Whichever crew makes the most money wins. Simple.

Turf War (2 teams only)
A timed capture-the-base mode. There are a number of bases around the map that you have to take by standing on them for a short period of time. The more players that are on a base, the faster it can be captured. The more bases that your team owns, the faster your team's cash score increases. If the rival gang is on or near a base, you won't be able to take control of it - so do what you can to try and... displace them. The team with the most cash at the end of the round wins.

Race
Race to the finish through each checkpoint in order. If you take a wrong turn or mess up in some way you can respawn your vehicle on the last checkpoint you passed. There is a large selection of races for cars, boats, and helicopters - you can choose laps and vehicle class/type. This mode has two sub-modes: 'Free Race' and 'Cannonball Run.' Free Race are point-to-point races. First one to reach the end point wins. Cannonball Run are races where you have to traverse several checkpoints any way you can.

Previously announced modes:

Team Deathmatch (2-8 Teams)
Players work as a team to rub out other teams for money and the crew with the most cash at the end of the round wins. Take the other crew down. Remember to loot the cash dropped by deceased players. That's the way to get ahead.

Cops n' Crooks (2 teams only)
A team-based mode in which the Crooks must get their Boss to safety while the Cops have to take him down. The Boss is marked with a crosshair. This mode has two sub-modes: 'All For One' and 'One For All.'

In All For One, one team is made up of Crooks and a Boss, and the other team is made up of Cops. The Cops are trying to hunt down and kill the Boss while the Crooks are trying to protect him. The Cops win by killing the Boss and the Crooks win by getting the Boss safely to the getaway vehicle and escaping.

One For All is similar but there is no Boss. Here, the Cops win by killing all of the Crooks and the Crooks win by filling up a getaway vehicle with members of their team. Only 4 people can escape in the getaway vehicle. Players cannot respawn in this mode.

Both of these variations can be won by the Cops if they manage to destroy the getaway vehicle.

GTA Race
Similar to the orthodox Race, but with the added element of combat. Race and fight your way through the checkpoints in order and then hit the finish, but this time you can also pick up the weapons spawned en route to help take out your opponents. You can also exit the vehicle during the road races.

Grand Theft Auto IV will feature more than 15 multiplayer modes, including additional cooperative and competitive modes to be announced prior to the game's launch for Xbox 360 and PS3 on April 29.

This game sounds far too good to be true. They can't POSSIBLY deliver on all the awesomeness they're hinting at.

I'm calling it right now: It's all a hoax. Rockstar's been firing up Photoshop and making fake trailers and animations for the past two years, and when April 29th rolls around we'll all put our copies of GTA4 into our systems and this is what will pop up on our screens. No intro, no game, just the sound of Rick Astley and Rockstar North's uproarious laughter as they count their $Texas profits.
I think you lowered this discussion by posting that. And I lowered myself by listening/watching the entire thing.
I'm trying to forcefully lower my expectations here. I've reached the point of hype for this game where if this game doesn't cause instant world peace I will be disappointed.

Crooks and Cops? Free mode? Hangman's Noose? GTA Race? The two new trailers? The glowing previews?

I'm needing to make shit up just to keep my expectations from being too unreasonable.
Is that Tracy Morgan doing PlayboyX's voice?
That Liberty City Gun Club trailer did not help matters at all. At all.

I'm currently inventing a time machine that will only warp to April 29, 2008.
Was the gunclub trailer all aboot the multiplayer? Looked like it.

If it was, I don't see what the people who are pissing aboot the dip in graphical quality were complaining aboot.
I've been doing okay these past few months, I believe. I've had plenty of other games keeping me busy and occupied, work and college classes certainly take priority, new friends have helped complete the adjustment process of being in a new place, and I just felt comfortable at last. My apartment was a home.

Now I have this overwhelming urge to forsake all earthly attachments and enter a deep, meditative, Qui Gon Jinn sleep-state in front of a Gamestop until April 29th.

Good. Fucking. Christ.
I just read the whole thing. Fuck me in the ass for not having an Xbox. I wasn't expecting it to be THAT good.
*reads article, gets a boner, works more fervently on the time machine*
post #446 of 1991
Can someone copy-paste it into the thread? The site is blocked at work.
It's JPG scans.
Can't copy paste.
Assassin's Greed.
Also, I was peeved at how tight a lid they were keeping on the soundtrack this time around, then the article name dropped Queen, Elton John, Smashing Pumpkins, The Stooges, and Stevie Nicks.

I may very well not *need* a custom soundtrack this time around.
That shot on page 9 of the car flying off the transit truck. Beautiful. Also, the UI looks incredibly minimal this time around.
