Point.

If GTA was to be set in another time, I would've always gone for the mid to late 70s and just have a decayed Liberty City ala The Warriors as your setting. Now that would have some great music.
Why is the superiority of GTA to its copycats even a debate?

What sets the GTA games above them is their vastness, the selection of things to do, and they always have a great story. There are so many memorable twists, missions and characters in GTA:SA that I wouldn't know what to begin with in telling someone how great it is
post #54 of 1991
If the standard camera and fighting style of Max Payne were pasted onto these games instead of what it currently has, the games would be near-perfect.

Bad idea. All the hookers and guns in the world wouldn't make Pennsylvania exciting.

I have a wish list for this game a mile long. Assuming GTA IV will be at least the same size as San Andreas, I really really want snow and ice to be included in the weather system.
Also being able to choose from multiple characters would be nice. You could do that with the first GTA as I recall, not that it made much of a difference. I could be wrong though, it's been a while and I didn't really get into the series until GTA 2.
I'm kind of hoping for a global story this time, like starting in New York then to Tokyo then to Rio or something like that. It would give them a chance to be even more diverse with the cities and surrounding areas, and I would think that the next gen systems could pull that off...

Just add zombies!

This is what it's been for me. Saint's Row and Crackdown are fun, but they're just there to tide me over until October. I've played all of San Andreas I've cared to play (I'm not going to drive that motorcycle around the dry dock again, screw 100%), except for the occasional bout of messing around. The other GTA rip-off games are fun, but they're no substitute for a new GTA game. As long as Rockstar takes what worked from these games and incorporates it into GTA IV, it'll be solid.

Plus, say what you want about Table Tennis, it'll be great to see GTA with that graphics engine.

Haha, yeah I only really wanted Philadelphia more or less.

But think about it, how fun would a Grand Theft Amish be?
What about the radio? Do you know how annoying Amish music is? And unless you had an Amish choir sitting in the back of your wagon I don't know how'd that work.

Although drivebys would be pretty funny.

I'm pretty sure I never got to jump from rooftop to rooftop while carrying a car in GTA. I'm just saying...

Whatever happened to a potential Old West GTA? I heard rumors a while ago - anything ever coming from that?

I'd be up for a good cow-milking rampage.

But the button-mashing butterchurn missions? Back into the minus column.

No, but I did in The Hulk and Spider Man three years ago. It wasn't much fun after an hour then either.
and you can fly a helicopter from rooftop to rooftop. or take a learjet and skydive to whatever rooftop you want.

This is true. though another thing I would add that makes the GTA games unique is Rockstar North's outsider-looking-in/read-too-many-Judge-Dredd-comics-growing-up OTT sense of humour let loose upon american movies and american excess. competitors can make all the gameplay adjustments and technical innovations they like, fact is nobody else gets that sense of humour right. it's just not authentic if it's not Rockstar (speaking of which, anyone ever play that American McGee game?)

If you mean "Bad Day L.A.", I read it was cancelled, which sucks, because I was really looking forward to it.

I always got an Elmore Leonard/Carl Hiassen vibe from their stories.

It wasn't cancelled, it came out last year and it's horrible.
I got a GTA 4 email.

Same logo with the countdown.

On the bottom, in quotation marks:

"Things will be different."

I'll be the first to ask, I suppose.

Fucking how?

You mean McGee's Alice? That was an inspiring jump n run. Certainly not a great game as such, but it had well made levels and an interesting design.

GTA 4? Maybe it's WoW-inspired middle age. Hijack horses and trojan statues and work yourself up from a bloody peon to king of your country.

I would love a western GTA, the game Gun so desperately tried to be.

I had read it was canceled, then I never saw it in stores. Must have just been the Xbox version that got the axe.

Or it could just be like BTTF II/III. Western, 50s, present, and future.
We discussed this in another thread a good while back, but I would really really love a GTA-style Mad Max game.
Devin was only partly right...GTA London wasn't an expansion for GTA2 it was an expansion for GTA1.
Interestingly: Liberty City, Vice and San Andreas all were smaller districts in GTA1.

GTA 2 was a futuristic setting a la BladeRunner, Neuromancer, Shadowrun.

Then came GTA3 (Liberty City, Vice, San Andreas) which expanded on the original districts from GTA1

And now comes GTA4.
It will either be a futuristic setting or set in Europe.
I hope Rockstar can pull off a parody of Europe as well as they have slated the American way of things.
And most definitely include multiplayer aspects, here is hope they won't WOW it completely...
I'd like to hear the radio on a futuristic version of GTA and hear Justin Timberlake on the Oldies station.

Here's a question for you techie gamers.

Did the past GTA's push the PS2 to some limit? The way Final Fantasy XII looks is amazing for a PS2 game and I wonder if Rockstar sacrificed look for scope on their titles. Or if they even pushed the envelope on that system at all.
I am guessing they pushed the limits when it came to scope with the obvious sacrifice being graphical quality.

I would imagine the biggest problem faced early on in the GTA series would be streaming content off the disc without having a loading screen every 10 seconds in an open world game.

I know Pandemic developed some fancy pants tool to stream content off the disc for Mercenaries.

Yeah, it was called 'fog'.
Can't. Wait.

Hopefully it won't be online-only.
The idea of Rockstar making a violence-driven Second Life is kind of appealing though.
Call me a psycho but one of the main appeals of the GTA series for me was the fact that I was the only one going nuts all over the city.
A pure massively multiplayer game with everybody going mayhem all the time slamming cars everywhere the whole thing would loose some of it for me.
And what about the law enforcement? Would that be played by real players? I don't know if that really is the essence of GTA.
Part of it always was the story and ridiculous stunts and missions you had to undertake. Just pure deathmatch in the city wouldn't work for long.
But it's the only way I'll get some sort of street cred with my online gang.
I was watching TV late last night and when TNT switched over to infomercials Rockstar had purchased at least a half hour slot that just had a black screen with GTAIV in giant letters and that countdown to preview clock ticking at the bottom.

Please tell me you didn't watch it for at least 30 minutes.

The thought of that just made me laugh (dare I say out loud?). I could see some stoned/drunk gamer, just sitting there - waiting.
I'm kinda geeking out over this thing now. If GTA IV has multiplayer co-op gangs I'm gonna be a happy gamer come end of the year.
I wonder if they'll do the same thing tonight?

No, but I couldn't help but switch back every two minutes just to check. Like the episode of Friends where Joey and Chandler discover they're getting a porn channel for free. Wait, I've never seen Friends, disregard that.

I wouldn't be surprised since the preview video is supposed to drop tomorrow.

absolutely agree with this. online multiplayer deathmatch gaming is not always the next best step. GTA at its best is Simon Phoenix: The Experience, and it should not be shared with anyone. YOU are the storm. though the multiplayer online thing is inevitable for GTA, in an ideal world, Rockstar would focus on refining the missions and the AI and not making it this bloated competitive free-for-all.
Is this going to be available for the PC? Sorry if someone already answered it but I didn't notice it being answered.
I thought the trailer would drop at midnight, but I guess it doesnt....

Not long now....
3 1/2 hours to go...
Why am I so anxious for this? I still haven't beat San Andreas because it's so expansive so why am I looking forward to what will probably be an even bigger experience?

I hope they don't try for a super-realistic look to the game. I enjoy being a homicidal maniac in the game because I can't be one in real life. Putting too much of a realistic bent on the look would probably make me uncomfortable going into the titty bar and taking a chainsaw to all the stoutie strippers.

Are you worried that if it becomes more realistic, the homicidal maniac inside you will come out and you'll start really killing strippers?
