I saw an interview not long ago with Winkler where he said that MGM wanted to do a sequel to ROCKY. Winkler wanted to do RAGING BULL but couldn't generate much interest for the project. As he puts it he ended up making a deal with MGM that he'd produce a sequel to ROCKY if they would also finance RAGING BULL.

Same here. I'm surprised it hasn't received more praise. If Stallone ever does a CG-enhanced Special Edition of the films, that painting is a must. As are nuclear mushroom clouds with each one of Drago's punches.

It's so well done that I actually stopped and had to think if I'd misidentified the actual painting Paulie did in the movie.

It is quite good.

Well, I guess I'll be the one to stick up for ROCKY II. Not only does it carry over the tone of the original flawlessly, but it's also the only one aside from the original and BALBOA that feels like it has personal meaning for Stallone. It's all about a guy who became an overnight sensation attempting to adjust to the trials of fame, which I'm sure is the exact thing Stallone experienced with ROCKY. Plus who doesn't love the funked up Conti score?

Also, the Paulie painting post actually did fool me for a few minutes.

Agreed. I love Rocky II. Adrian telling him to win and the following training montage are spectacular.

The film can be an awfully long trip to that point, though.

See that's what I sort of liked about the sequels. The movies became bigger and got bigger budgets. They were more slicker and better looking. Rocky was richer and living good.

So the quality of the films improved (not so much story wise) as Rocky improved. But then Rocky collapsed and so did the quality of the films.

Whoa, whoa, whoa. The worst thing about II is that it most certainly does not carry over the tone of the first. In "Rocky", Stallone plays Rocky as a guy who's rough around the edges, not very educated, but he's smart, he knows people, he understands himself. When he says and does "dumb" things, its done with a wink from him. He's putting on a show, poking fun at himself.

"Rocky II" is the opposite. The movie makes fun of him, it's laughing at him, not with him. He's the punchline, we're supposed to laugh at how dumb he is. Watch it again, as I did recently, and its blatant.

The sequel exists solely to have him win, which basically undercuts the entire purpose and theme of the original. Basically, its a bridging mechanism to get us from "Rocky" to "Rocky III" where he can be rich, famous, handsome, and spend 80% of the movie beating people up. The movie is 95% fluff, it spends the entire time padding out a finale that we all knew was coming before the lights dimmed.
