Judging albums

Do you have a favorite album you use to measure the taste of the new people you meet? For example I love Reign in Blood by Slayer but I can understand some may not feel that way. I adore Black Love by The Afghan Whigs but I know it may be too much for some people.

But if you've heard Quixotic by Martina Topley-Bird and didn't like it, you're Antichrist.

I think if you judge somebody by their opinions more than why they have them, you're an idiot in most cases. Entertainment is one of those cases.

That said, there's probably a bunch of albums I'd be amazed to find people hate, but so long as they can give me a legitimate reason why I'm cool with it.

When I started dating my girlfriend, I made her watch 28 Days Later. Just to make sure she was the real deal.

I'm dating a person who didn't like Shaun of the Dead, that's how open-minded I am. But Quixotic is an exception. I honestly think there's something seriously wrong with you if you don't dig the shit out of that record.

Most of my favourite albums are too obscure for most people, but if a person I meet has a bunch of all time favourite albums that are currently in the top 40 charts then I probably wont ultimately end up BFF with them. Probably.

I think DaveB gave a good example of the type of people I'm talking about in a music thread ages ago, they have a very generic and bland taste in music that isnt necessarily bad, just boring and lacking. They're usually 'bubbly' too. God, I hate bubbly people.

Quixotic's ok, not amazing but not mediocre either. Been a while since I heard it though.

If you don't at least appreciate the TALENT of Jeff Buckley, I won't cut you loose but I will be aghast.

And if someone doesn't like Tom Waits, they're wrong.

I think it was people with only greatest hits discs in their collection. Those people usually are hopelessly boring.

Otherwise, I'm skeptical (okay, outright contemptuous) of people who brag about their taste in strictly contemporary or fashionable music. I just can't take someone seriously when they tell me The Killers are the best group ever.

My entire family doesn't like Tom Waits. And yes, they are very wrong.

Not a music thing, but I'd just like to mention that the girl I started seeing 2 weeks back said these words to me last night: "I love Wild Hogs... I laughed and laughed!"

First thought going through my mind was should I break up with her?

After you've ridden her like one, then yeah.

EDIT: I like Charlies Angels though, so this might make me a hypocrite of sorts...
