David Lee Roth - Eat 'Em And Smile

I finally listened to Diamond Dave's first studio disc (released in 1986) in its entirety. It's short and sweet, just like the first 6 VH albums. Tell me that 'Yankee Rose', 'Shyboy', 'Ladies' Nite In Buffalo?', 'Goin' Crazy', 'Tobacco Road', and 'Elephant Gun' can't compete with the best of VH. If it weren't for the last three weaker tracks, this would be a near-masterpiece.

Poor Sammy. Roth outdid Hagar's solo and VH career in one full swoop after his departure from the band.

That is a good disc, but his following efforts were very uneven. It's a close call between his solo career and Hagar's.

I've never listened to the entire thing through, but that band - man, putting a charismatic frontman like Diamond Dave onstage with virtuosos on the level of Sheehan and Vai must have just been incredible to see live.

Even a bad DLR tune would probably entertain me more than most of Hagar's stuff. Roth's humor is outlandish enough that he doesn't have to take himself seriously, and, frankly, I'll take that approach over Hagar's butt-crunch arena-rock.

And I'll say with this album, at least, Roth assembled a backing band that played to his strengths. I pretty much forgot about Eddie after hearing Steve Vai shred all over these tunes.
