BATTLES: Like Scanners, but pleasant.

A few friends and I (including Grey, who materialized behind us) saw Battles last night. I can understand not entirely digging the band's music, which can get into overly technical, geeked out prog territory. But holy fuck, their stage presence and dexterity is out of this world. I can't remember another band that's blown my head apart like they did.

John Stanier sweated more than any other drummer I've ever seen -- the guy needs a kiddie pool under him instead of a rug. Maybe that's because some of the songs have breakbeat lines seeming designed to punish him as much as propel the song.

And Ian Williams and Tyondai Braxton dance and jump while playing their guitars with one hand and keyboards with the other, simultaneously. It's amazing stuff to watch, like seeing a body develop cell by cell as they loop and layer tiny meolodies, noise patterns and guitar lines, all over Stanier's bedrock playing.

The video for Atlas (http://youtube.com/watch?v=IpGp-22t0lU) kinda gets across what their show is like, but only in part. Go see these guys.

What no love for Dave Konopka? Just kidding. I have seen them twice and they are amazing live.

Honestly,

(a) he was crouched behind Stanier most of the show and I couldn't really see him, though I'm sure he was as amazing as everyone else

and

(b) I couldn't remember how to spell his name.

Ha ha, I was kidding. Glad someone else on here likes them besides me. Their new album really does have something for everyone and they truly put on an amazing show.

Indeed, I did enjoy this. Rock and roll from the FUTURE, or something to that effect. I wrote a bit about it here:

Definitely catch the live show if you are into this kind of thing and they perform near your homebase. Do bring earplugs, though.

I dig those shots of the back of my head. Thanks.

I'm kind of new to Battles since I only just heard their EPs last year and then some leaked Mirrorred tracks earlier this year. My curiosity is mostly due to Ian Williams's involvement since I'm a moderate Don Caballero fan. Listening to DC (and other math-rock/new prog/whatever), I'm often conflicted between being fascinated by the skills/oneness and being annoyed as fuck by the rigid, repetitive interplay. Maybe if there were a prominent instrument playing loosely over everything else, and with some type of freedom/variation, I'd have been totally sold on Don Cab.

Anyway, the good news, for me at least, is that Battles seems to fill in some of the gaps that were never really sealed for me in a group like Don Caballero. I'm intrigued by what I've heard from Battles so far and look forward to their first full-length album (comes out in late May, right?). Based on your comments, they seem like a band that would be exciting to listen to and watch. I wish I could have made the Atlanta show but to be totally honest, only 1 of my friends is a fan and he couldn't make it. I'm pretty sure that most people I know would consider a Battles listening session to be cruel and unusual punishment.
