Yeah, I love this movie. The producer is a huge fan of slasher flicks... I'm hoping they do some more of these dealing with other subgenres of horror. It'd be nice to have Starz do a new one of these every Halloween.

some aspects of the topic, such as the influence Italian horror cinema had on the slasher genre, for example, are given short shrift and are only briefly touched upon.

I took issue with this as well, I haven't read the book but apparently it gives an equal lack of attention to the Italian forefathers.

For my money the best, ie, most interesting interviewees are Wes Craven (being his usual intellectually agile and stimulating self) and Amy Holden Jones (whose contribution here far outweighs her contribution to the genre, though I kind of like SPM just because). I also loved the shit out of Adam Rockoff paying lip service to the underrated Slaughter High in his "special message" as well as another one of my personal favorites, Killer Party, being referenced in the trivia feature of the disc.

However my being more than well versed in the genre proved to be a detriment while watching "Going to Pieces". At the end of the day I feel that this doc and possibly by extention, the book, are more for people just getting acquainted with the genre.

Edit: Among the interviewees, Jeff Katz was certainly the most fun.

I wasn't really blown away by this one, but as Jackknife says it gives a pretty good overview to layman viewers. Has anyone here seenThe American Nightmare, a doc IFC did on independent horror films of the late sixities to mid seventies?

Yeah, that's a really good doc. Pretty disturbing as well. It does a good job of comparing the horror in films to the real-world atrocities that were being committed... and doesn't flinch at showing off any of them. More real death than a Faces of Death flick.

Why I loved Going to Pieces- sure, it's more of an introduction than anything, but you have to give them credit for focusing on some of the smaller and more underappreciated flicks when they could've just focused on the big boys and dismissed the genre entirely.

I agree. The reason I find films like Last House on The Left more geniunely disturbing than torture porn like Hostel is that they harkened to something very real and ugly that was going on at that time. Now horror films are more or less just exercises in "ZOMG that was so fucking sick!" type of video game fantasy.

Well, I think you could make the case that Hostel is a response to what's going on in our times... with people being beheaded on camera and being tortured at concentration camps. I do agree that every new film seems set on topping everything before it, though.

I saw an ad for this the week before it was on Starz, and for some reason (screaming denial, perhaps?) I thought it was on AMC. See, I don't have Starz, and when I tried to set my DVR to record this (I had to go out that night), and found I couldn't, the "NOOOOOOOOO!!!" I let out could be heard throughout the neighborhood. I'm so glad it's out on DVD and I'll get to see it now. And BTW, Chris continues to do nice reviews. Keep up[ the good work.

Good review and another movie to buy. Dammit.

I don't know if I agree with a new one every year though. What other subgenre has enough to keep it interesting? Zombies, maybe?
Well, the others wouldn't be such crowd pleasers, but hell, they could do anything. Even featuring a certain country's films- the Italian gore flicks, the Mexican gothic ones, the Asian boom.

Hey, thanks for the praise, Iggy and Patrick. It's greatly appreciated.

Iggy, I'm sorry to hear about your DVR snafu, but you should definitely check out the doc now that it's on DVD. It's really good. I was just lucky to have gotten to see it. I don't have cable (I'm too cheap to pay for it), and had it not been for the fact that I write for Creature Corner now, I probably wouldn't have even heard about it.

I can't wait to watch this. They definitely need more documentaries about the horror genre... I'd like to see more docs on horror directors too.
