Duke Nukem Forever

Any word on this? It's been in development since 1997 and every now and then some news comes out saying "it's getting close."

Wikipedia has this image:

Apparently it was from some ad looking for game developers. I guess 3d Realms confirmed that it is a screen shot from Duke Forever.

3D realms said recently something along the lines of "we messed up; we've been too ambitious; now we're just focusing on getting the thing finished and done with."
They also said the same thing two years ago, and apparantly a year or two before that.
Don't hold your breath.

So does this mean, we're just gonna get a half-assed project on the shelves just so they can get it released?

Duke Nukem Forever is turning into the Superman Returns of the videogame world!

The question is whether it comes out like Daikatana, or like Prey.
I'm hoping for the latter.

Both of those games kind of sucked after the "factor" rubbed off.

Prey at least had its moments.

I don't see this thing ever seeing the light of day. And you know something? Maybe that's not such a bad thing. My fond memories of Rare have been tarnished by the Perfect Dark and Conker sequels. Note to 3dRealms; we've been waiting ten years for this sucker. Either cancel the project outright or get on the ball and give us something spectacular.

This hoary old beast is still being brought up? At this point I can guarantee that if it's ever released it'll be a disappointment.
I may as well say the obvious: Duke Nukem Forever? More like Duke Nukem Forever In Development.
Oh fuck. Don't start.

I really cannot believe this is still in development. It's ridiculous. It's been a running joke for so long that even the joke has died. Can you imagine what the press would make of a movie that was in development this long? I understand that they've sunk a lot of money into it, and don't want to flush all that away with no chance at making it back. But Jesus Fuck.

Does anyone care about this character anymore?
Actually recently I do, just because he's been off the charts so long.

People have beat you to it:

Forever has drawn a number of jokes related to its development time line. Gamers have substituted several names in place of Forever, calling it ForNever, Forever Delayed, Never, Whenever, If Ever, (Is) Taking Forever and Neverever.[35]
I also love this part in the Wikipedia entry for Duke Nukem Forever:

Quote:
On March 21, 2006, 3D Realms CEO Scott Miller stated that when Forever was finished, 3D Realms would begin work on a sequel.
I wonder how long that sequel that would take.

And I agree that if the game is ever released it will suck. Look at DOOM III. It took them way too long to make it and when it came out, yeah the graphics were great, but everything else sucked. FPS's had come a long way since they were making DOOM III. You can drive cars, tanks, planes and helicopters now in the Battlefield series. Grand Theft Auto allows you to do a shit load of stuff. If you can't do any of this in Duke Nukem Forever the game will suck.

I figured it had already been said elsewhere. It's a pretty obvious joke. I just wanted to say it. Cheap joke, I know.

Begin working on a sequel? Like that'll ever happen. If Forever is ever released, it'll have to really blow the socks off everyone. Much like GTA IV is more than likely going to do.

I personally loved the hell out of DOOM 3's simplicity, I just wish the AI had a bit more um, smarts to it.

They should wait for the tech and release Duke Nukem 4D, but that could be what they were aiming for in the first place that led to the project being delayed. Aiming for the impossible.
The best aspect of the original game was the level of interactivity at the time(and some of the weapons), that's the aspect of the new game that needs to blow everything else away.

If nothing else they could stand to change the name; Duke Nukem Forever is a riff on a Batman installment that Begins hopefully made everyone completely forget about.
I used to prefer Duke to Doom as a kid, I just liked the fact that it was in a modern urban setting as opposed to random hallways. As much as I'd love to play Duke Forever, there's only one FPS I am waiting for, only one...

Crysis baby.

I pre-ordered this on Amazon. It comes bundled with Chinese Democracy.

See, I'd heard that it comes with a free invitation to the beta test for Victory in Iraq.

We will probably see the latter before the former.
The problem is this comes with so much baggage that it will have to better then Half Life 2 not to be considered a huge dissapointment. And I have noted that very, very, few games...or movies, for that matter...that have had such a long, troubled history as this one have been any good when they finally get out.
Yes,Prey was not a complete disaster like Daikataina, but it was certainly not the huge hit and industry changing game that makers intended.
I couldn't even get past the first chapter of Daikatana. I could only stay interested in killing frogs for so long.

I just watched the E3 2001 trailer for DNF again. It still looks cool. I'm confident it'll be released eventually.

Supposedly they've completely scrapped everything they've done on the game and started again from scratch, twice.

What the heck are they doing down there? I know game development is an involved process, but it shouldn't take nearly a decade to make a 3D shooter, especially when you have a pre-existing game engine at your disposal.

And it's not like 3D Realms is a bunch of rookies making their first game; they've been around for a long time.

More than Duke Nukem Forever, I'm looking forward to the post mortem detailing the whole development process of it. I'm hoping it'll be more fascinating than the whole Daikatana debacle.

I too own Daikatana, I can see why Romero never got a job again. That game sucked ass, and alot of people like me got robbed. I will not buy into this duke game also. I learned my lesson already.
