US Marines prohibit large tattoos

The US Marines are banning the wearing of large tattoos, saying they do not represent "traditional values".

From Sunday, tattoos on the head or neck, or large tattoos on arms or legs will not be allowed. Marines already with the tattoos are exempt.

Unit commanders will photograph and document all existing tattoos to make sure Marines do not touch them up.

Dozens of Marines are reportedly queuing up at tattoo parlours to beat the deadline.

Marines have long been banned from having racist or sexist tattoos.

But from 1 April, "sleeve" tattoos that cover most of an arm or leg will be banned, as will smaller half or quarter sleeve tattoos if they are visible on arms or legs when a Marine is wearing shorts and T-shirt.

"Tattoos or brands that are prejudicial to good order, discipline and morale, or are of a nature to bring discredit upon the Marine Corps are also prohibited," the new rules say.

Marine Corps Commandant James Conway said: "Some Marines have taken the liberty of tattooing themselves to a point that is contrary to our professional demeanour and high standards.

"I believe tattoos of an excessive nature do not represent our traditional values."

Anyone caught with fresh ink in the wrong places could face up to two years in prison.

Marine Cpl Jeremy Slaton, who has tattooed skulls spelling Death down his right arm, told Associated Press he would have to delay getting Life tattooed down the other.

"I guess I'll get the other half later... It's kind of messed up."

Tattoo artist Jerry Layton of Oceanside, California, told AP he was booked up with Marines ahead of Sunday's deadline.

The US Navy and Air Force have strict tattoo rules.

But the Army relaxed them last year as it struggles with filling its ranks.
This sounds like a Family Guy sketch. Back when Family Guy was good.

If your 18 your old enough to die and kill for your country but not drink. And now you can't be a Marine get whatever fucking tattoo you want. Is it just me, or do the Marines need to look at the freefall of the recruitment rate and realize they don't have the luxury of being picky? Maybe they and the rest of the arm services can come to the same realization about gay soldiers also.

When I was (stupid) at Basic Training, we had someone get kicked out week one. The guy had a "barcode" tattooed on the back of his neck with his social security number beneath it.

I don't know what things are like these days, but as I remember, Navy guys had the scummiest looking tattoos that I'd ever seen. Like prison tats, only with colors.

And do they really have to make a rule to stop USAF personnel from getting tattoos? What kind of a tattoo would you get if you're in the Air Force?

"Traditional values?" What traditional values do you need to be a hired killer?

Now I'll never join the military if I can't get a tattoo on my whole back depicting Optimus Prime boxing Count Chocula.

And, at that, what's more traditional than dumb boots getting tats anyway?

Edit: Actually, Vader, you could still get that. As long as you can't see it in "PT gear" (shorts and T-shirt) you're still good.

I had some douche in my platoon who got a USMC tattoo before entering Boot. My, the fun times the bulldogs had with him...

Whatever the PR machine can do to try to make them look squeaky clean.

So visible tats are now completely barred from armed services? I see a lot of folks getting frivolous ink on their necks and upper arms if another draft ever rolls around.

They usually get them on the ship, using shitty tools.

A fellow Bill Hicks fan I see.

You know it.

I don't know why people who might be going into war zones would excessively decorate their skins anyway:

"What's that?"

"It's half of a $600 tatoo and a burn scar."

I can see why they don't want tattoos to be visible while in uniform, though. Lack of uniformity sort of defeats the purpose of a uniform.

What uniforms do you know that consist of a t-shirt and shorts? Besides UPS guys?

Ones you train in, like the Marines.

It's all about being uniform. You're not supposed to express individuality, you're part of a team blah blah blah.

Indeed. Robots don't have personalities.

Which is what makes the whole "Army of One" ad campaign so ludicrous. Anyone who buys into it deserves to be cannon fodder.
