There are 25 of these beauties. Numbers 1 and 5 induced an audible chuckle. The Fabio one left me stunned.

Shak-Fu? Oh boy ...

I love the Atari gamebox art. The graphics for the system were so bad, they had to make up for it on the box art.

One of my all time favorites ...

I remember some of these games.....but I'd never know it from looking at these examples of cover art!

Another classic, although I always hated that the Bard in the cover seems to be wearing a modern sweater.

Thief of Fate had a really cool cover;

the game looks pretty decent too... at least it does for a game from 1991

Good choice, the original art for the back cover of this game was recently sold on ebay for $4,550.

The Bard's Tale- PHENOMINAL! I had an apple IIc growing up, and it (along with the great games 'Space Rogue' and Prince of Persia) was one of the few decent games available. I remember going to the neighborhood computer store and seeing the Library-of-Alexandria-sized shelves of titles available for the Commodore standing right next to the single shelf of crappy IIc titles. I actually had nightmares about getting 'Mavis Bacon teaches Typing' for Christmas.

I used to play Shaq Fu all the fucking time. I remember getting the SNES version and being pissed because some of the features and characters were left out, so I would go over to a friend's house so I could could play the Genesis version.

Notice how a lot of the Atari box art was signed by the artist (not done at all today)

I think it was up to the artists to interpret what the games "could" stand for. In breakout for example, I don't think there was ever any intent into making it be tennis or any type of futuristic sport. The challenge for the artists was how to represent such an abstract concept, and in the early days, they always tried to make it seem like the game truly represented something that was concrete (a sport, some technology, a story).

Name that tune.

That's a good one, Warlords, multiplayer fun for the whole family with no need for silly splitscreens!

Is Christian Bochner any relation to Hart Bochner?

I'm amused by this one:

Why is a football game endorsing vikings who pinch a loaf?

Was never into these games, but I always loved this cover.

I actually possess an unopened copy of that Fabio game. I found it buried in the basement of my old workplace. I'm never gonna open it and I don't want to give it away. It just sits on a shelf, flexing its airbrushed muscles at me for all time.

Reminded me of this...

The outside cover was pretty weak for Symphony of the Night. I forgave it only because when you open the case, this is waiting for you under the disc;

Why is Fabio using a Conan sword?

Also, I like how most of these look like they belong on dime store Novels.

"Dune 2: Building of a Dynasty" was a great game and great box art.

I actually did a pastel enlarged replica of the cover art. The school where I did the art wanted to keep it, so I don't have it around to take a picture.

I always loved that Phalanx cover. What the hell it means, no one knows.

Vic Tokai had 2 games on that list. That's awesome in itself. Vic Tokai was one of my favorite publishers on the NES/Genesis era.
