I found your theory about the 2 kinds of successful modern comedy to be dead-on . . . For me, the desire to have it both ways between story and anarchy is what keeps TALLEDEGA NIGHTS from being as good as ANCHORMAN . . . Once John C. Reilly disappeared in the second act, I found myself not caring about the "plot developments" until he returned. ANCHORMAN is pure lunacy from start to finish.

I wasn't going to see it anyway because I loathe Heder so much. I mean I really hate the guys acting. Really, really, really hate it.
But this review pretty much sealed the deal.
Maybe if I'm drunk at work one day I'll catch it when it comes to cable.

This might be complete heresy, but I think I dug this more than Talladega Nights. It's really absurd and has a few moments that I thought were hysterical.
I thought it was funnier than Talladega Nights myself, so I'm in the heretic category.

There's a notion I live by: you can't tell someone what's funny. If they laugh, they laugh. Why do I mention this? I laughed here and when I wasn't laughing, I was entertained. I love Ferrell's humor. The guy can save bad material. Here, as a sex addict figure skater, he really does fine. Loved seeing Poehler and Arnett in a film. They stole it for me. Not great but a lot of fun.

Actually, I'm not a big Talladega Nights fan either.

re: Ferrell's schtick getting old.

This train of thought will last up until his next Adam McKay collaboration. Every time.

Very funny film. The North Korean footage of the Iron Lotus cracked me up. Even Heder, who I think is a one-trick pony, did a good job.

If Christopher Nolan does a third Batman movie, I propose Will Arnett for The Riddler. He's got that demented skinny guy thing down pat.

I completely agree with the review. While there were some funny moments, the movie's just too much of a retread of Dodgeball and the like. Just making everything more "outrageous" doesn't make the same old underdogs vs. evil a-holes story funnier, and that's all Blades of Glory has. This is sort of the same problem I had with Anchorman - great in parts, but it feels like everyone is just trying too hard to be wacky. Same with Talladega Nights, but I thought Farrell and Rielly played well off each other, and that saved it to some degree.

I was fully expecting Heder to suck, but I was surprised how stilted and awkward Jenna Fischer's performance was. What the hell happened?

All in all, a funny movie that's instantly disposable. I saw it two hours ago and the only thing I even remember about it is that Arnett and Poehler were criminally underused.
Yeah, Blades of Glory isn't in the same league as Anchorman or Dodgeball, but that doesn't mean it is a bad movie. It has some decent laughs, the cast is solid, and it moves at a good pace. The chase between Ferrell and Arnett at the end of the movie was the highlight for me.

Besides, I can't hate any movie that uses Queen's Flash Gordon song.
I actually thought it was quite a bit better than Dodgeball.

Thought it was moderately funny and entertaining. Jenna Fischer's cleavage was a plus. Her performance was almost as bad as Isla Fischer's in the Lookout though.

My guess: a weak part and contrasting styles. Having watched every episode of The Office a minimum of three times*, it's definitely not a case of talent lacking. She's really good at selling the subtle, dramatic nuances of her character, but she's surrounded by broad characters here in an ill-defined role.

*Three because I don't have season three on DVD yet. Without it the average goes much higher.

Ugh. This movie is just not that funny. They played things way too straight. And if someone makes a gay joke out of that statement I'm punching you right in the gonads.
Definitely had its laughs, but for me it peaked early with the Zoolander-esque career highlights of Ferrell and Heder's characters. The skating scenes were great but there were large pockets of this -notably the training scenes- where I felt like I was being held hostage. Romany Malco was criminally wasted, too.

Overall, I was surprised by how inconsequential it felt, even for a Will Ferrell sports comedy - almost like a 'bonus' movie thrown out there for WF fans.

Saw it the other night waiting for Grindhouse to drop (damn 2:15am end time) I thought it was pretty good. Not quite up to TD Nights or Anchorman. But pretty good. Loved the scene in the sexaholic meeting.
Yeah, I don't see why you bother to cast Arnett, Poehler, and Malco and then just...not really use them. Very disappointing.

I remember laughing, but I can't remember what I was laughing at. Though, I definitely remember not laughing at all at the sequence that ran with the credits.

Yeah, that part during the end credits was creepy in a bad way...

Good heavens, what a shit smear.
It starts off so lame I nearly turned it off, but Ferrell saves it in the 2nd half. The sex clinic/seduction sequence was a lot of fun.

Who's that doofus playing the stalker? That guy is desperately unfunny.

Nick Swardson. He's funny on "Reno 911," both the show and the movie. Not too funny in BLADES but why should he be any different than the rest of the cast?
So far none of the positive reviews have inspired me to even rent this film. i seem to have little love for Will Ferrell. Went to and loved him in Elf but otherwise,,,nothing. Anyone got a suggested film to start with that may convince me that Will is better than i think?

I liked him in Grandma's Boy. Am I the only person who liked that movie?

Seems like there are more people who enjoy that movie than you'd figure. Wasn't a favorite of mine, but it had a few solid laughs. More than I can say for BLADES.

Thanks for the tip. Will try to pick this up in the next few weeks and give it a whirl.

Man, I really didn't like that one myself. I think that guy also pops up to annoy in the equally appalling Benchwarmers.

Saw this last night for the first time.

The First Act is hilarious when it's running completely on gimmick, with the idea of combining wrestling and skating with a rock & roll lifestyle. The Second Act drags to a dead hault as Jenna Fischer looks so uncomfortable and Heder can't support an A plot on his own. Third Act, fortunately, saves things as there's the Ferrell/Arnett chase scene and the final skating scene set to Flash Gordon.

I laughed consistently throughout, and "mind bottling" killed me for some reason, but this is otherwise forgettable. Kudos to the ending for going balls-out insane.
