Six-year-old's arrest triggers controversy

Six-year-old kindergarten student Desre'e Watson was handcuffed and booked into the Highlands County Jail Tuesday on one felony and two misdemeanor charges.

Her mom, Lateshia Wilson, says she couldn't believe the news when she got the call about the arrest.

"He was like, 'They have Desre'e in jail,' and I was shocked," said Wilson.

Police say the Avon Elementary School student had become violent, throwing chairs, striking a teacher, and crying and wailing uncontrollably. Her mom says she's never seen that kind of behavior out of her daughter and believes something must have triggered it.

"I was upset simply [by the] fact they handcuffed her and took her to jail but I just want to find out what really went on," said Wilson.

Desre'e, who is suspended from school, is charged with disruption of a school function, battery on school employees and resisting a law enforcement officer without violence. The state attorney's office will decide whether to prosecute or drop the charges.

Avon Elementary's principal said she couldn't comment on this particular case, but says there is a certain procedure faculty members follow when a child is out of control, and that if a parent can't be reached, they call law enforcement.

In this case, Wilson was at work when the incident occurred. She worries about the long-term effects the experience will have on her child.

"I'm afraid she might have trauma from this because right now she's like slacking up on eating and I've noticed like different things have changed," said Wilson.

Desre'e's family is considering legal action and is looking to the NAACP for help.

Avon Park Police Chief Prank Mercurio says it's the police department's responsibility to keep schools safe, and this isn't the first time an elementary school student has been arrested in the city.
Clearly they're just trying to get her used to future surroundings.

When did having a temper tantrum when you're six turn into an fucking arrestable offense?

Probably since teachers and schools became afraid of lawsuits. Still, it's pretty ridiculous.

It seems like it would be a rather racially-charged prank.

Fake or not, what a world we live in.

I don't think it's fake. It seems way to risky to be fake and if it was the network that made it up would be in massive shit. But if it is fake then I guess I got fooled! Hahahaheee.oooohhh....hahaha.... good times.
