Up on my Soapbox: What's in a Name?

I just read a record review in the latest issue of Rolling Stone for a new album from a band that has to have the coolest name for a band EVER: Alabama Thunderpussy. I wrote an e-mail to a pal & opined that "Thunderpussy" would have been a pretty cool name, but as with most things, putting "Alabama" in front of it made it cooler somehow.

And that reminded me that some names are a lot cooler than they otherwise might have been. Would "Chainsaw Massacre" have been as effective a title as "The TEXAS Chainsaw Massacre"? Would "Dusk" have worked as well as "Near Dark"? "Extraterrestrial" or "Xenomorph" as well as "Alien?"

I think NOT!

There's really no purpose to this thread other than to rant a bit. Join me if you like, flame me if you must, but it's been a slow day 'round these parts.

Carry on.

Best names in rap:

Ghostface Killah and Roots Manuva

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club is an awesome name. In this instance it's lifted from a movie, but it kicks ass all the same.

As far as names go, it's hard to top The Abominable Doctor Phibes.

Alabama Thunderpussy vs. Nashville Pussy in a steel cage match.

Let's let the blood flow and see who's the biggest pussy!

I really dig the titles for these:

ABOMINABLE: They could've just gone with the cliche usage of Sasquatch/Bigfoot in the title combined with words like "Terror" (Sasquatch Terror), but I think it was cool to just go with a single adjective that will forever be associated with this monster.

LOST SKELETON OF CADAVERA: A great throw-back to the films it's paying homage to.

I love the "other-worldly" (inhuman) pronoun titles like IT, THEY, THEM, IT LIVES, etc. I also love slimy single word titles like SQUIRM, SLITHER, and SSSSSSS!

Looks like the word "Abominable" may be in the same category as "Alabama" in that it makes words cooler by association.

Of course, we then get all the fun of distinguishing between Them! (1954), Them (2007) and They.
