Kerry, Gingrich announce climate showdown.
Quote:
Former House Speaker and possible presidential candidate Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.) and 2004 Democratic nominee Sen. John Kerry (Mass.) are set to square off on climate change next week, their staffs announced Thursday.

The debate, hosted by New York University’s John Brademas Center for the Study of Congress, will take place next Tuesday, April 10, at 10 a.m. in the Russell Senate Office Building.
Reportedly, the point of Gingrich's upcoming book is that environmental stewardship is a mainstream value that transcends partisan politics. So, I'm interested in seeing what points these guys disagree on. Either way, Kerry and Gingrich are two intelligent, experienced guys, which should provide for a good debate/discussion on this issue.

This Sunday! Sunday! Sunday! It's the battle of the ALSO-RANS!!!

This senses-shattering plea for attention goes down LIVE on pay-per-view in the event we just had to call, "The Clash of the Irrelevants!"

Report about the debate.

It turns out that Gingrich agrees the earth is warming and that humans are contributing to that problem. That sets him apart from a lot of people in his party. Kerry and Gingrich just disagree as to the best solution. Kerry wants to use government regulation to combat the problem. Gingrich wants to use tax incentives and market pressure to get corporations to reduce carbon emissions.

Oh good. The Invisible Hand. Yes, I'm sure that will produce stellar results.

Well, at least there's one prominent conservative out there that doesn't think global warming is just a fantasy concocted by a bunch of godless socialist heathens.

That's the best thing I can say about him.

Yes. He's wrong, but at least he's honest. That puts Gingrich above the likes of the CATO Institute and the American Enterprise Institute with their bullshit attempts to cast doubt on the scientific end of things.

Gingrich makes Rush Limbagh cry.

Here's what I don't get about Born-Again Environmentalists®... They agree with the left after ignoring their science and ridiculing them for decades. How is it that all of a sudden they're supposed to have credibility? Sorry, but I don't buy it.

There are no short cuts to solving this problem. No half measures. You either accept that this is the major global issue of the 21st century or you're a part of the problem. We must think in terms of 100 years from now in order to define the scope of the challenge properly. Otherwise we're just punting this problem to our great grandkids.

Well what does that mean? It means that growing corn for biodiesel maybe isn't such a good idea if it requires more than its share of energy in coal to turn that stalk into gasoline. It means making global warming the international diplomatic priority. And it probably means getting off of carbon-based energy completely.

Of course Gingrich is right about the value of market based initiatives. Duh, this is a capitalist society. But to ignore the essential role of the government is ludicrous. There is no market incentive for shareholders to think in 100 year terms. They can barely think about the next few fiscal quarters.

And self-regulation has proven throughout history to not work. Yes, some companies say they are changing their tune without Kyoto. But that's just marketing. The world doesn't get saved by marketing. There has to be a consequences to irresponsibility or recklessness.

Does that mean more beauracracy? To a very limited extent, yes it does. But at least it'll be the most energy efficient department in the government. And it will probably save the planet in the process. You tell me how much government that is worth, but I'm pretty sure that the reality won't be as much as you're imagining.
