I've asked myself the same thing.

Eh, It was never really about the music when it came to KISS. It was about model vans.

My mom ( whos middle name is Beth) haunted my childhood with this piece of shit song.
We've all been there. Be thankful it wasn't Hard Luck Woman.
They're playing near here in July. I'm vaguely tempted to try and get tickets.
It's a song by a band whose music really doesn't hold up without pyro, stage blood and Gene Simmon's disgustingly scuzzy leer. Plus it's sung by the drummer and none of the other band members even play on it. So yeah, fuck that song.

Not totally true.

I am not saying Kiss is an amazing band, and Beth is a truly shitty little song, but they do have many very good rock & roll songs between 1974 and 1982 that most people haven't heard, especially the people who unequivocally despise them. Certainly a lot of songs that sound great without the visuals of Paul Stanley's hairy chest and Gene's tired schtick.

As lame as it is, it's still better than the appalling 1998 follow up "I Finally Found My Way." It was never really a band built for ballads.

I love 'em, warts and all. That said, BETH and ROCK AND ROLL ALL NIGHT can piss off.

Yeah, I love Kiss. I got to see almost all of them live (Ace wasn't invited then, damn it all). And since Peter was there, he came out to the edge of the stage, sat down, and sang Beth, and I thought "Huh. Now I've seen Peter sing Beth. Man, that song is really fucking boring, even live." That being said, we all know what KISS is all about anyway, and it's this guy:

Gene all the way.
Gene's great, God of Thunder and all that, but have you ever heard the hilariously awkward outtakes of Paul's stage banter?

Paul- "People, I know thith place is famouth for having great meat, and I'd like to think my teeth into thome meat right now!!!"
Entire Audience "Huh?"
Paul- "You know, like an aaaaath, or a leeeeeggg, you know, MEAT!"
Entire Audience "Oooohhh......?"

Yeah, that spoken-word Paul/stage banter album is doing the rounds online. It has about 75 tracks. The official title is "People, help me get this off my chest" and it's endlessly entertaining.

Because it was the only KISS songs the girls liked. And being it was the slow-dance song at the 5th grade sock hop, that fact was crucial.

To this day, I'm still mad at KISS for inventing the heavy metal ballad. There was a lot of evil in the 80's that they have to answer for.
But aren't 50% of the heavy metal power ballads really, really great (in a drunken guilty pleasure sing-a-long way)?

ps. Kiss guitarist (2nd Ace replacement) Mark St John died at age 51 three days ago.

No.
Yeah, 50% is incredibly generous. I have an inexplicable weakness for Home Sweet Home, but I can pretty happily never hear the rest of them again.
You guys are truly too cool for school.
All these years I thought When the Children Cry and I Saw Red were heartbreaking artistic works.

Maybe it's an age thing.

I can't deny a soft spot for the good ballads, but Beth is just too limp. "I Still Love You" is a better Kiss effort.

How bout that "Forever" co-written by Michael Bolton.
Dat's a doozy.
That's kind of catchy, but it sounds more Bolton than Kiss. Coincidentally back when Bolton was into "rock" and having hair he used to play with Kiss's Bruce Kulick.

Slade is a much better KISS.
Quiet Riot is a better Slade.
Not to derail the thread, but Quiet Riot's best song was a Slade tune and Slade has lots of other, better Slade songs to choose from. Just because the Quiet Riot version is more popular doesn't mean squat.

Also, you can tell that Slade was a huge influence on KISS from the music to the goofy space suits, except they're way more interesting musically.

Slade being more interesting musically than KISS is like being a tall midget.

Because you were an Italian kid growing up in the 70s in the tri-state area. You were required by law to like all things KISS. I'm almost surprised there's not a KISS cover band in your past.

Most popular song anyway. Don't forget about "Mama Weer All Crazee Now" as well.

Only KISS realized how ugly they were and wisely disguised their faces with paint, at least initially. I confess I've only heard some of Slade's catalog so maybe I've missed some gems, but what I've heard is a little mellow for my taste. "Run Runaway" and "Merry Christmas Everybody" are great though.

Try not to sing along to "My Oh My" when it's two o clock in the morning and you're drunk on your ass.

There are worse metal ballads then Beth out there (anything by White Lion or Cinderella) but that still doesn't make it a good song.

Now you done gone too far. "Nobody's Fool", man.

The one song without an Ace guitar solo being their biggest hit at that time still baffles me.

Gudbuy T'Jane, Look What You Dun, How Does It Feel, and the very Kiss-like Lock Up Your Daughters are all fun arena rock songs that don't insult your intelligence too much. Now I've gone and psyched myself up to listen to some Slade....

"Gudbuy T'Jane" is a great tune that holds up well today. Of course, I also enjoy the cover by Britny Fox. "Take Me Bak 'Ome" is pretty good to.

What's kinda funny about Beth (and Hard Luck Woman, for that matter), is that they aren't even "power ballads." They're just sappy ballads you could here on AM radio right next to You Light Up My Life. And I actually think they're both OK pop tunes, in terms of their melodies, although I think I like Alice Cooper's You and Me better than either one.

I think all of you need to relax and have a cup of "Beth's Blend" coffee:

My dream is listen to Beth one fine day while sipping on official KISS coffee.
