Jason Isbell out of the Drive By Truckers

Sad news, if not totally unexpected at some point. He's got a solo record this summer. He wrote some of the best songs on the last few records, but Hood and Cooley are the heart of the band. Still, I'm a little bummed.

Huge bummer. I never got into DBT until Decoration Day, but I can't imagine their live shows having quite the same appeal without Isbell. He wasn't just an extra guitarist - he was easily the most talented guitarist of the three and the most proficient backup vocalist (and probably the most talented, if more orthodox, lead vocalist). And while Cooley and Hood always have at least a few fantastic songs per album, they made bigger missteps, too, IMO. Isbell was almost completely reliable - barely any clunkers in the bunch. He was a huge factor in bumping Decoration Day and Dirty South up a notch from Southern Rock Opera.

Judging from what I've read on his MySpace site and on the DBT message board, it's not as amicable as Hood made it sound on their official site, and Isbell didn't want to leave.

Oh, well. Hope this means he'll have more time to crank out solo material. It seems like Sirens of the Ditch has been sitting on the shelf for about three years.

I hear you. It's a real shot in the arm to have John Neff back in the band full-time, though. His pedal steel has always been a huge compliment to their sound when he plays with them, and he's an outstanding guitarist.

Sigh. Going to put on the Live at the 40 Watt DVD.

He was with them the last time they played here, and I've gotta say Neff didn't add much. But, then again, he was only playing pedal steel, and there were three "official" guitarists in the band, so it was probably intentional that he was backgrounded a bit.

I'll be getting that solo album for sure. I have to say my favorite stuff is Isbell's.
