Exploitation Recommendation Corner

With Grindhouse out, I figure more than a few of us are looking deep into the genres that RR and QT are paying homage to, and after just adding a few that they mention by name, I have gotten an endless list of more to check out. What I hope for here is to save people some time and give you a few good ones to check out, some to avoid, and for my own personal gain to check out movies I may not have thought of otherwise. For the purposes of this thread, exploitation can really be anything from splatter to revenge to women in prison to shock etc...anything on the fringe of entertainment with usually less artistic value than internet porno that we probably wouldn't hear about otherwise.

I'll start us off with:
Thriller: A cruel picture - QT name drops this as "the most brutal revenge flick ever shot" and is obviously an influence for Kill Bill. The truth is that while it is a fucked up story, the movie itself really isn't as shocking/disturbing as some other things I have seen (Ilsa, I'm looking your way, thanks Devin), but it actually isn't bad at all if you can handle minimal dialogue and action. Oh and the unrated one features hardcore porno.

Erotic Nights of the Living Dead - Joe D'amato directs this one..how could zombies and hardcore porno go wrong? Well it does, don't waste your time. Probably not aided by the fact that I watched it in italian, but I doubt the dialogue was that meaningful anyway.

Ilsa: She Wolf of the SS - I know this is on essential Chud, but I had to include it anyway for being one of the few movies to disturb me on any level in a long time. For being this disturbing, the movie is actually pretty watchable too. Highest recommendation. I'm actually going to check out the sequels to this one.

I Spit on Your Grave - the no brainer and probably an obvious one, but I had to mention it as it is probably the first one you should watch if you are looking deeper in the "revenge" genre. The rape is brutal, the end is satisfying. Earns it's template reputation and I recommend you check it out if you haven't already.

I found this on the DVD Maniacs board earlier today and it seems like a big help if you're seeking out influences:

In fairness, I don't think Tarantino was really trying to imitate a slasher movie (despite what he might have said). What it reminded me of was that 1970's exploitation subgenre of "male psycho targets group of women" movies, the flicks that pitted one scenery-chewing actor against a group of lovely up-and-coming actresses. Good examples would be THE CENTERFOLD GIRLS, THE SWINGING BARMAIDS, THE STUDENT TEACHERS and RAPE SQUAD (a.k.a. ACT OF VENGEANCE).

I know Tarantino said "slasher" in reviews but he may have been dumbing the level of comparison down for people who wouldn't know obscure flicks like that. In any event, it's interesting to look at DEATH PROOF in comparison to the aforementioned "male psycho vs. group of women" movies.

Of course there are also the car chase flicks referenced in Tarantino's dialogue, particularly VANISHING POINT and DIRTY MARY, CRAZY LARRY (which makes an appearance on Bridget Fonda's television set in JACKIE BROWN).

I'll also throw a shout out for Dario Argento's THE CAT O' NINE TAILS, a music cut from which shows up on the soundtrack to DEATH PROOF (it's Stuntman's Mike's "stalking" theme).

As for PLANET TERROR, one sequence between Josh Brolin and a zombiefied Nicky Katt in a hospital corridor reminded me of Lucio Fulci's THE BEYOND and CITY OF THE LIVING DEAD, with a little pinch of De Palma's BODY DOUBLE thrown in for added flavor.

Good call on all the recommendations. Feel free to move outside of the realm of QT and RR's flick influences though, I'm looking to watch anything interesting in the wide realm that is "exploitation", bonus points if it disturbs me.

I DRINK YOUR BLOOD (1971) - A group of blood-cult hippies eat meat pies laced with rabies and go on a murderous rampage. Obviously inspired by NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD -- but gorier, sleazier, funnier. You can be stone-cold sober and still have a great time with this one. Extra points for including the beautiful Lynn Lowry (SHIVERS, THE CRAZIES) as a mute hippy who nonchalantly cuts off an old woman's hand with an electric carving knife. Available on DVD from Fangoria.

CANNIBAL MAN (1972) - Extremely disturbing psychological horror flick from Spain about a slaughterhouse employee who murders his girlfriend and leaves the body to draw flies in his bedroom. As others visit and discover the body, the murders continue. A grindhouse and drive-in favorite under the U.S. title APARTMENT ON THE 13TH FLOOR. Available on DVD from Anchor Bay. One of my personal favorites.

MOUNTAIN OF THE CANNIBAL GOD (1978) - This is on the flipside of the CANNIBAL MAN disc. An Italian gutmuncher/adventure in the Amazon jungle. Ursula Andress takes off her clothes a lot while Stacy Keach gives a surprisingly credible and serious performance. Oh, and there's tons of gore and even a scene of a cannibal tribesman buggering a pig (hilarious!). From the must-see oeuvre of schlockmeister Sergio Martino.

Excellent, the first one especially seems to be my cup of tea, it's on my queue now. I am having trouble finding the double feature of the second two, would it be listed under "blood soaked cinema: slave of the cannibal god/ the severed arm"?
Here's what I remember QT himself recommending in an issue of Cinescape from 2003...(along with my comments if I've seen it)
Assault on Precinct 13-Cool movie
Rolling Thunder-even cooler (RIP John Flynn)
5 Fingers of Death-Barely remember it but I think it left me cold
The Master of the Flying Guillotine-love it.
Coffy-I really did not like this one too much.

The ones I haven't seen that he put on the Exploitation list were The Bonnie Parker Story and of course, Thriller.

Cannibal Holocaust and Abby. One is horrifying, the other is horrifyinger.

SLAVE OF THE CANNIBAL GOD is the same movie as MOUNTAIN OF THE CANNIBAL GOD. THE SEVERED ARM is something else entirely. I've never seen it.

I just checked Netflix and the flip disc isn't available. The two films are listed separately, but under the "save" section -- which means who the hell knows when they'll show up on your doorstep. Amazon.com has the flip disc listed from independent sellers (because it's out of print) for $14.95, but you can get them each separately for as low as $4.95.

Anyway, if I recommend more titles I'll make sure they're available at Netflix and not out of print. Sorry about that.

Not a problem, I usually have other avenues to look at these. All on the up and up of course... I'll probably end up renting the cannibal god movie through netflix and getting the other one separately, 4.95 sounds cheap for what you describe.

Currently checking out "Eat the Schoolgirl," a more modern flick but no less strange, "Rolling Thunder," "Cannibal Holocaust," "Vanishing Point," "SS Hell Camp," the Ilsa sequels, "City of the Living Dead," "Gruesome Twosome," "The Beyond," "The Big Doll House," and the best picture winning "Porno Holocaust." The next tangent looks to be the Corman flicks, currently Death Race 2000 and the Fantastic Four are the only Corman flicks under my belt, and I fucking love DR2000. Any recommendations on that front or anything similar would be great.

Isn't Abby that Exorcist knock-off? I heard it's horrible.

DR2000 is indeed brilliant.

I'd recommend Dr. Phibes, Twitch of the Death Nerve, Invasion of the Bee Girls, Shock Waves, and Shriek of the Mutilated.
Screw Abby, what about Beyond the Door? I've heard bad things...

Abby didn't hit the radar, I'm having trouble tracking it down..and that says a lot considering I've tracked down 11 movies with the word "Cannibal" in the title. "Schoolgirls in Chains" sounds like a good character piece that is right up my alley. I'll look into "Beyond the Door" and will add what I can of Atmospherium's recommendations to netflix..and get the rest somehow. These are great guys, keep em coming.
I'm pretty sure Abby was released on DVD but it's pretty scarce even for that. Having said that, I've never bothered to track it down myself so I can't say exactly how tough it is to find.

I'm going to expand on my previous suggestions just in case there's something you don't want to bother with from the outset.

The Abominable Dr. Phibes: Vincent Price as a mad killer doctor.
Twitch of the Death Nerve: Early 70's giallo. Also under the title "Bay of Blood".
Invasion of the Bee Girls: It's difficult to describe, but since you're aiming for grindhouse stuff, I doubt it'll disappoint.
Shock Waves: Underwater zombie nazis. With Peter Cushing.
Shriek of the Mutilated: Yeti-tastic.

TOYS ARE NOT FOR CHILDREN. Incest is best when you put your father to the test.
I mentioned Cockfighter in the other thread - QT lifts the font from this one for Death Proof, and like Death Proof, Cockfighter was cut up and retitled (as Born to Kill). Roger Corman also edited in a dream sequence of cars blowing up. So that the trailer could have cars blowing up. Track down the Anchor Bay restored dvd. One of my favorite films.

For some truly random shit, check out Satan's Sadists, Angels' Wild Women, and Blazing Stewardesses. Awful, awful drive-in filler, with dirty-hot 70s broads.

Four Flies on Grey Velvet has its moments. I like the gay detective.
Four Flies On Grey Velvet will be impossible to get for most people.

Cat O'Nine Tails is a good substitute, though, with Karl Malden turning in surprisingly credible work as a blind guy.

Cockfighter is great; if I can find my copy of Two Lane Blacktop (anther recommendation, though out of print) I'm going to do a Warren Oates edition of videodrome with those two, Alfredo Garcia and The Hired Hand.
I actually like Abby. The William Girdler flick right? I always thought that exorcism was better when combined with disco.

That's some sweet shit there. If someone is really DYING to see Two-Lane (and you should be dying to see it) or Four Flies (not so much), PM me and I can help.

Hey man check out www.revengeismydestiny.com and www.j4hi.com for some hard to find movies on dvd-r. www.xploitedcinema.com has very quality stuff and you can spend days just browsing their selection. I sound like a commercial, but I've ordered movies from every one of those sites and have not had a problem.

all great stuff guys, my netflix is splooging all over the place. Keep em coming.

Eat the schoolgirl - pretty fucked up but since I didn't have subs I don't know if it was worth it.
Porno Holocaust - I need to learn to stay far away from D'amato horror movies
SS Hell Camp - It isn't Ilsa, but its still pretty damn funny.

I guess I'll be the first to drop a XXX title; a very nasty and outlandishly degrading 1976 film called Hot Summer In The City. I was almost surprised that the star of the film, 1967 Playboy Playmate Lisa Baker, didn't kill herself after this, her first and last film

I'll just cut and paste the description for you: Lily-white virgin, is abducted by a gang of black men being paid by whites to start a race riot. After violating her in a Cadillac, the men take her to a country cabin. Duke, the leader, takes possession of her but then loses her in a poker game. The violence escalates to a full throttled climax. Filled with stark, brutal imagery from start to finish, Hot Summer In The City is a haunting film you won't soon forget. The characters are so believable that it seems like a documentary*. Lisa Baker's sexy screen presence is mute and ghostlike.

I can't say much more, but I am pretty certain that an actor playing one of Baker's assailants, is actually retarded and I'm not even fucking kidding; his face, speech and body language point to him being a man suffering from some pronounced mental disabilty. So one can imagine it's quite...interesting, watching this guy jerking off in a corner to explicit sex / simulated rape and thrice engaging in the same.

*I don't think I have to tell you that this is utter bullshit, but I'll say it anyway, it is utter bullshit and the only thing that I could bring myself to believe about Hot Summer In The City is that the cast probably all found God after making it....fun stuff though.

Night of the Demon (1980)

Bigfoot does not want to be left alone, he does not wish to hang out with John Lithgow and his Reagan era family unit, Bigfoot wants to rape thirteen year old girls, beat people to death with their own guns, be worshipped in a podunk cosplay orgy, impale campers on tree limbs whilst they're still in their sleeping bags, make girl scouts slash themselves to death with their own knives and rip off biker penises, and he does it too.

So, yeah, Night of the Demon, pretty entertaining grindhouse movie.

This fucker isn't on ebay, the dvd has a listing on amazon but no one is selling it, the usual suspects have nothing on it, so my question to you is where and how can i see it now for even a few bucks less than from xploited??

In other news, having trouble finding anything on these as well:
centerfold girls, swinging barmaids, student teachers, rape squad, schoolgirls in chains.

Rape Squad a.k.a. Act of Vengeance isn't on DVD, you might be able to locate a bootleg, but I couldn't tell you were to look (I do own a Rape Squad t-shirt, so that's something).

As for HSITC, if you can't cough up $25 +, then best of luck to you - otherwise, wait.

Endgame, a surprisingly good early 1983 sci-fi flick that was obviously inspired by Escape From New York, but actually is reminiscent of The Running Man, which it preempts by several years. It's directed by a name that's already on here Joe D'Amato. It's the only flick of his that I've seen, and I've heard that a lot of his films are crap, but this one is indeed entertaining. Plus it has Al Cliver in the lead role and Laura Gemser. So far it's only available on vhs, and I was lucky enough to get a copy from a Hollywood Video when they were liquidating their vhs stock last summer.

The vhs cover art struck me at the mom and pop rental shop that I would frequent weekly back in 2004 to 2005, and it didn't hurt that it was only a 1.00. It was just a blind rental, and it ended up being worth more than the dollar I paid for it.

So my friend who has collected these movies for a few years actually had Hot Summer in the City, so I can now count myself in the proud few that have seen it. Whew. I really don't know what else to say. Everything about the movie is filthy. Great shit.

I actually went through 42nd street forever last night and picked out what I could on Netflix..the one that struck me as hilariously great is "Ginger" which is not only available on netflix, but is a widely available trilogy! Here is the amazing trailer.

A few more that sounded interesting but I wanted to get feedback before I actually paid to watch these: Blood Spattered Bride, The Depraved (also known as exponerad, the exposed, and diary of a rape, and will be out this year on DVD from synapse) and one that wasn't on the 42nd street forever but kept coming up when looking at gore lists: Murder set pieces. Worth money to seek out?

No love here for "The Thing With Two Heads"? Racist rich white guy has his head attached to the shoulder of a militant black man? I always wanted to see a remake with Gene Hackman and 50 Cent.

Also, thanks to Tarantino's defunct Rolling Thunder imprint, I can heartily recommend "Detroit 9000" as being far superior to the similar "Training Day".

Schoolgirls in chains, Rape squad, Schoolgirls in Chains, Student Teachers, Centerfold Girls, swinging barmaids, Andy Kaufman Rarities, and one more TBD to get the 5 and 2 free sale. I haven't found all five of the first titles at any other one site.

Edit: checked FMTL and they don't appear to have any of these, unless I'm missing some sections.

Yes. I have the Post-Apocalyptic collection released by Media Blasters some time ago, it contains 2019: After the Fall of New York, Bronx Warriors and New Barbarians.

Bronx Warriors is the most entertaining out of the three, for reasons far removed from it actually being good, but 2019 is a half-way valiant effort by Sergio Martino (Torso, Mountain of the Cannibal God, All the Colors of the Dark), but I prefer his gialli.

Anyone have any other good DVD-R sites? I still can't find one that has those five flicks other than revengeismydestiny.com, and 20 bucks is a TAD steep, but at least the buy 5 get 2 deal brings the average down a little bit. Hell if anyone has any of these and would be wiling to part with them, I'd make it worth your time. In case you forgot, those five movies I refer to are Rape Squad, Schoolgirls in Chains, Student Teachers, Centerfold Girls, and Swinging Barmaids.

Also if anyone can point me in the direction of any site at all that carries The Depraved(aka exposed, exponerad, diary of a rape) please direct me as such.
