Going to minor league games 07

I know some around here get out to minor league baseball games each year, figured you could post about experiences here.

Went to my first one of the season last night. It was opening night for the Greenville Drive, a Class A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox. They were playing the Columbus Catfish, a Devil Rays affiliate. As some may know, the stadium for the Drive, opened in 2006, is a miniature replica of Fenway Park. Green Monster, Pesky Pole the whole bit. You can see it at www.greenvilledrive.com .

Anyway, the place was packed with more than 5,700 out for opening night. My wife and I had lawn tickets ($5 a piece), so we set a blanket out on the hill down the left field line. Had a couple of dogs while I was there not bad and only $2 each. Later on we moved into seats down the first base line. The Drive won, 6-5, and Jonathan Papelbon's brother, Joshua Papelbon, got the save.

BTW, Joshua Papelbon throws full-on "submarine" style. Like, knuckles scraping the ground submarine style.

I usually try to go at least once a year to our local AAA affaliate in Scranton. Since the team's inception it was the farm team for the Phillies (Red Barons), but now the NY Yankees have taken over. Makes sense that they would come to the area, since there are so many displaced New Yorkers in the Pocono/Scranton region.

I'm not a Yankee fan, but I love baseball and tickets are incredibly cheap (although getting decent tickets are going to be a pain otherwise I'll be sitting in the nosebleed section of the stadium). Hopefully I'll get a chance to go to a game or two once the weather warms up; I don't love baseball nearly enough to sit in 30-40 degree weather for 9 innings.

New Orleans Zephyrs is our team. AAA. We went last year to see them play against the Albuquerque Isotopes. Great time. Ended up right behind the Isotopes bullpen and one of the guys gave my son a foul ball hit their way.

Hoping to make it out to a few more games this season.

The Durham Bulls are quite a fun team to watch. Their season started last week and I hope to take my 16 month old son to a couple of games this year.

Last year we took him to a game when he was quite little (6 months old) and we were absolutely scarred by the "theme music" that accompanied each player as they walked out to home plate to bat.

Almost every player comes out to DMX or T.I. or some crazy rapper with obscene lyrics.. HOw is this even allowed at the ball park? I guess that is the beauty of living in Durham!

I'm seeing the Altoona Curve (AA), an affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates (AAAA), next month.

I try to catch as many Indianapolis Indians games as possible every year. I usually divide my money between seats behind the plate and seat out in the lawn at Victory Field, where you can bring your own beer. Usually a better time out on the lawn, depending on the crowd you sit around.

I guess I'm lucky in that I get to watch the 2006 AAA Champion Tucson Sidewinders when I want to see a game.
