Best new (board and card) games you have played lately

I haven't played too too many in the last 6 months, but one of the most fun has been Fury of Dracula:

I'm not usually into vampire games (although the Vampire: The Eternal Struggle CCG was really fun), but this boardgame is fucking awesome. It's like the old Scotland Yard game, but with ultra-violence and multiple ways to win. And vampires. And Van Helsing in a format where he doesn't actually suck.

Still playing Steve Jackson Games' Munchkin and Ninja Burger regularly. Played the World of Warcraft boardgame and after 5 hours decided that wasn't very fun. I am suppossed to be trying that crazy-assed Heroscape wargame at a friend's place in May, now that he is in a house big enough to set that one up for all of us to play.

What about the rest of y'all? Play anything fun lately?

Played Arkham Horror and House on Haunted Hill for the first time a few weeks ago. Both are fun, atmospheric blends of board and role-playing games that are more about cooperation than competition, yet still a blast to play. Arkham Horror does an especially great job of nicely building a good ol' fashioned Lovecraftian sense of doom as more and more monsters flood the board.

I know this isn't a new game, but I finally picked up "Ticket to Ride" and it's an absolute blast. Hell, my entire family--from my parents to my nieces and nephews--love it. That's really a tribute to the playability of the game.

That's a wonderful game, and the expansions add a lot of fun new elements such as passengers and cargo.

I'm still playing another Fantasy Flight game; A Game of Thrones, which is a great game by itself and a good adaptation.

And I finally discovered the awesomeness of Puerto Rico and Pillars of the Earth.

I just picked up Cleopatra and the Society of Architects, which is another Days of Wonder game. I've played it twice now, and it will probably stay in rotation. It's fun for gamers and non-gamers (once you get them over the hump of the seeming complexity). You are trying to build the most parts of Cleopatra's palace without garnering too much corruption while building.

I have House on Haunted Hill, but haven't played it yet. How is it for casual gamers? I haven't yet found a group to play the more hardcore-gamer games.

I have a friend who hates playing these kind of board games and he loves it. What's fun is that you all start off as a stereotypical horror movie character -- a jock, a little girl, a reporter, a teenage girl -- and you're making your way through a haunted house that you construct as you go by laying down room tiles. Then at a certain point the "story" is revealed, and one player becomes the villain, complete with a devious plot to kill all the other players which is detailed on a handout they receive (it basically tells them what they have to do to win and any special rules that now apply to them). The remaining players receive their own handout telling them how to defeat the villain. So the game then becomes a race to see who can achieve their goals first. It's even more fun if you have people who can get into the parts and play the roles a little bit.

Sounds great.

I heard the rules, especially in the scenarios, are horribly vague, leading to a lot of head scratching and uncertainty about when and how objectives are achieved. Did you find this to be true?

Not at all. Then again, I played it with the group I've gamed with for almost ten years, so we may have found something clear that some less-experienced players may not.

My group has been addicted to Power Grid and Carcasonne for a while. I also got a good first impression from Warrior Knights, but it seems kind of long, so it's a little hard to motivate people to try it again.

I really didn't like Betrayal at House on the Hill (that's the proper title). The players don't actually do anything or make any decisions. The game pretty much plays itself. It only needs players to move the pieces. You just go move to the next empty slot and do what the tile says. It's not as if there's a winning strategy or anything. It's kind of like Talisman in that way, only not as interminably long.

If you're looking for a better take on the cooperate board game, check out Shadows Over Camelot.

Caylus

Caylus.

I believe Caylus is the finest game I've ever played.

Every time I play I am still overwhelmed with a sense of serenity that builds like a typhoon and can only be released by a sudden verbal explosion of, "I love this game."
