My sister said that to me around the time Green Lantern came out.  I was talking to her about the flick and how badly it sucked, and she just shook her head in disgust and said, "There's nothing special about him.  He's just a basic white-bread guy.  He is the most basic actor in Hollywood."  And really, he is.

Anybody got any idea how Chronicle is tracking?

Got to be under Woman in Black and the Phantom Menace. That's a lot of movies for Superbowl weekend.

Dragon Tattoo did fine. They might have wanted more because of the books, and maybe not the best release date, but critics and audiences more or less liked it, it got a bit of award love, and it's totally in the black. I imagine we'll see Fincher-less sequels, possibly done with a smaller budget.

Phantom Menace is next weekend.  The major releases this weekend are Chronicle, Woman in Black, and That Shitty-Looking Whale Movie.

I'm pulling for Woman in Black, just because a)it's Hammer! and b) I think Radcliffe has got the goods as an actor, and want to see him barrel forward beyond Harry Potter with much success and aplomb.

Wondering if Chronicle could be another genre flick the Internet over-hypes to shit and the general public could care less. Also their hiding it being a found-footage movie is telling.

Are the TV spots trying to hide the found-footage aspect?  I haven't seen any.  The trailer didn't seem shy at all about the home-video/found-footage aspect of the film.

Don't discount the Whale movie because it reminds me greatly of A Dolphin's Tale, which did very well last year.

I saw a commercial for this shit and my eyes nearly fell out of my skull from rolling them so much.  And there's something about Drew Barrymore that really irritates me.  She's trapped in this perpetual state of false childhood.  She spent her childhood acting like an adult, and now she's spending her adulthood acting like a child.  She never really matured in my eyes, as a woman or an actress, and when she's not on my TV, I forget she exists.  She's weird and lame.  She's always so giggly and childish in her interviews, and not in a charming way.  It's a little disturbing, frankly.  If she was a man, she'd probably be Michael Jackson.

It won't have the 3D bump though.

Was half full in bum-fuck small town NZ cinema I saw it in.  Of course that means nothing in the wider scale but if it's reached these people, likelihood  is it's hit the general public somewhat.

Assuming both WOMAN IN BLACK and CHRONICLE end up doing very well, studio execs will debate incessantly as to why these low budget films made lots of money. What do both movies have that made them so profitable?

After much hand-wringing, a major studio head will come to this conclusion: these two movies aren’t making money because of their concepts or plots or characters or direction. That’s bullshit sissy stuff.

The reason they’re big is because both film has a “K” sound in the title. “CHronicle”. “Woman in BlaCK”.

PEOPLE WANT HARD SOUNDING CONSONANTS!

The after-effects will be immediate. Projects with titles that have too many vowels will be shelved (“Nobody wants that a-e-i-o-u shit!”) Agents will immediately try to attach their A-List clients to the “tough parts” of the alphabet. Three studios will have competing projects all based on the letter “X”.

All of these movies will cost $300,000,000 dollars apiece and will be considered mandatory tentpoles…

…until someone breaks the bank with a film about punctuation.

Both The Woman in Black and Chronicle look to have done $9-ish today, so $20m is probable for both (Super Bowl's gonna deflate Sunday, obviously).  Both films cost under $15m to make, so it's a big win for both CBS Films and Fox.

Oh, good. Modest success for everybody!

That is honestly pretty cool. We need more mid-range movies. That's where the really good movies tend to come from, and they stablize Hollywood. When it's down to HUGE MEGA BLOCKBUSTERS vs. tiny indie arthouse films and microbudgeted stupid comedies, the potential for genuine entertainment is low. It's kind of like the entertainment equivalent of how a thriving middle class helps the economy.

Chronicle is gonna clean house on DVD.

According to most of the reviews, it really isn't much of a found footage film and definitely isn't filmed from only one point of view.

Chronicle and The Woman In Black are neck-and-neck for winning the weekend with takes of around 22 million.  Neither film has a budget exceeding $13 million, so kudos to the filmmakers.  It's nice to see two apparently good movies doing well, along with The Grey which is sitting at #3.

We're looking at a pretty big weekend for this time of year.  The Vow is tracking at 30+, Safe House around 25-30, Episode I 3D around 20-25, and Journey 2 in the 20-ish range.

I'm just so damn curious about the numbers that Episode 1 will pull in.

Whoever wins, we lose.

I hate to admit it, but I want to see safe house. Most likely wait for cable, but Denzel as a rogue super spy is quality entertainment to me.

Yeah, I pretty much go to all of Denzel's C+ action films, so I most likely will be seeing this.

Same here.  I have a hard time rooting against it though, because I'd love to see him keep releasing them one per year so that we get the OT.  By the time A New Hope is ready for a similar release, my son will be 4 years old and I would love to be able to take him to see the original trilogy in theaters,

Ms. Hudgens in cargo shorts has my dollar and I don't care who knows it.

You do know that you can stay home and spank it to naked pics of her online for free, right?

I'm more interested in seeing how Chronicle holds than how any of the new releases perform.

Hammerhead,  Just say...You wish to...Journey to a...Mysterious Island, to see Vanessa Hudgens in her Cargo Shorts in...3D!

Early estimates have Safe House, The Vow and Phantom Menace all opening big - $30 million+. Respectively, $38, $36 and $33 according to TOLDJA.

Nice little remainder to the Internet/fandom that their hatred for Phantom Menace clearly doesn't speak for the public. Also goes to show you how downplaying Ryan Reynolds (I'm sure his defenders will try to spin this all on him) and playing up Denzel as a badass got asses in seats.

Damn, I was not expecting those numbers.  And I didn't even know that Ryan Reynolds had supporters.  He's basic as fuck.

Looks like The Rock's latest piece of shit is getting left in the dust.  GOOD.

If it gets him back to making hardcore action flicks, that fine with me.

You know how angry geeks on the internet like to pretend people don't like Star Wars anymore?  Yeah, that's cute.

felix, The Rock will...Roll, as Roadblock the Heavy Machinegunner of...The Joes, when G.I. Joe Retaliation opens...June 29th!  That definitely will be an...Awesome Action Film!  YO JOE!

The Internet never really learns its lesson though. You know that jerk-off/nerdgasm reaction to The Amazing Spider-Man trailer this week? They're going to say that translates to it rivaling the Raimi/Maguire movies for box-office clout. Silly, silly, fandom...

I thought we were supposed to hate the new Spideman for being like Twilight or something? I don't think I can keep up with the fickle tastes of the nerd world anymore.

I believe there's a hierarchy of some sort in play here.

We need a newsletter or something.

Hierarchy-

King Nerd- This is a person who meshes an extensive knowledge of multiple genres, with a solid liberal arts education. Mix in a keen wit and some ability to write and you have the guy that can out quote the geeks while having the ability to imply that anyone that disagrees with them is: racist, sexist,a hate crime perpetrator, gay (this is tricky because if you imply someone is gay then you might become the hatecrime perpetrator), autistic, a virgin, impossibly stupid or a republican. The key here is to not venture too far into trollville, or most forumers will just ignore you.

Geek- This guy has an extensive genre knowledge, he is the one people turn to for answering specific questions on obscure topics. He may be passionate about his likes and dislikes, but he is not often inclined to try to sway others to his point of view. Good to have on forums, but dull if that is all you have.

Troll and Fail/troll- the troll lives to incite rage in other forumers. He is a fisherman and his bait is his critique of your post or point of view. The more nerd rage he inspires the greater his accomplishment. He may have an extensive knowledge of the subject, an artful writing style, or other tools to employ. But dont be fooled. His goal is to get as many people as twisted as possible. The fail troll is the guy that tries to do this but is so transparent and inept that the only laughs he inspires is the derision pointed at him.

Fan Boys- These people dont have much knowledge or insight on the specific genre being discussed. They just like it. If they really really like said genre, movie, game etc. They become ideal targets for the trolls as it is easy to inspire a reaction in them.

Character- These are seemingly unique personalities with no agenda. They have a point of view and love to participate. They usually do not react at all to the trolls. I often think these are not actual people but someones ongoing joke or piece of performance art. When ever a troll targets a character, he becomes a fail troll.

Fans- these are just the folk who like whatever subject is being discussed. They come in all types and can often spend time as a different class of forumer. But at the end of the day they just want to discuss whatever the particular subject is.  I think it is the like/need to be right that often causes a knowledgeable fan to turn into a king nerd or Troll.

.....I dunno, I am sure lists like this have been done to death on the interwebs, but these are the general types I see in forums.  And of course I failed to place them in any particular order, but oh well.

At my TPM:3D showing, there was line out the door of people willing to pay $8.50 to see a 13-year-old, critically-panned movie most of them already had on their shelf at home.

Star Wars fandom isn't dying any time soon.

You're overestimating the appeal of Ryan Reynolds. In my part of San Diego, more black people came out to see Safe House than I've EVER seen. And that includes Red Tails. I had no idea so many black people even lived in my area until last night.

Every single showing was sold out yesterday evening. Reynolds remains basic, Denzel remains boss.

The Vow did $15 million on Friday, Safe House did over $13 million, TPM3D "only" did $8 million.

Is it just me or has this been a busier-than-usual January and February at the movies?

We're going to have four films debut over $20 million this weekend. That's something that usually happens--rarely, might I add--during the summer.

A lot of that might be due to the fact that this weekend is the de facto Valentine's celebration, so a lot more couples are going to the movies this weekend.

African-American audiences LOVE Denzel.  Any hits in Ryan Reynolds filmography have fuck all to do with him, Van Wilder aside.

My screening was PACKED and I'd say 70% black, 30% white and of the former, it was all four quads. I made the remark on Twitter but seriously someone needs to make Denzel the villain in a big superhero movie, like the next Superman after Man of Steel.

Or the hero?

That's quite true (and well put), I've definitely seen the extreme end of the character type most clearly in my case with the Avclub which such posters as Cookie_Monster, Agent Broyles, Fluttershy and a host of others including the indisputably remarkable The Taco Bell bell at the pinnacle. However, I don't think I've ever seen anyone with the persistence and endurance of duke fleed in staying in character though.

In this case though, I was thinking more: Star Wars > Star Trek, Buffy > Twilight, Chud > AICN and so on ...
