Hopefully the Bat-Jihadists won't come after us for making our numbers low.

I break out laughing whenever some fanboy claims Rises will pass The Avengers. Will it be a better movie? In my opinion, quite probably. Will it be more fun? Not very likely. Will it make more money? Nope, not gonna happen.

And that right there is what I think will keep it from passing The Avengers.  It just doesn't have that "ride" feeling where you want to go again and again and again.

Could or could not. Who knows? I'm not sure "fun" really matters as Titanic certainly didn't fit that bill. And I certainly don't trust the internet when it comes to public opinion as some ppl like to claim that Avatar is the "worst, hated movie ever".

Of course "box office disappointment" talk will happen if it doesn't beat Avengers (opening or total gross) which is stupid. For some reason, two films can't do very well without their being some kind of competition. Anything above 170 M + opening and 400 M + domestic is a success from what I can see.

Why is their some kind of rivalry between Avengers and Dark Knight?  Who cares.  Both are going to make boat-loads of money.

Maybe there will be some mutterings in comparison to The Avengers initially, but as this thing crosses 500, nobody is going to be calling it a disappointment.

You may not know this but since the '40s there has been a secret number set by the Federal Government, the Jew Bankers and the Illuminati. This number sets the amount of dollars to be spent in tickets for the year. If the number gets passed two random members of Hollywood get killed and their deaths made to look like either autoerotic asphyxiation or pills. By trying to keep the BO of competing movies down fanboys are actually trying to save lives.

What?  Nobody's going to call it a box office disappointment by any stretch of the imagination.  The only ones that are going to make that stupid comparison are hard-on fans of either franchise.

I mean Avengers fans may get idiotic bragging rights, but nobody going to call either a disappointment.

This is the internet. Of course shit will get blown out of proportion no matter what happens.

"Fun" doesn't count for shit. AVATAR and TITANIC were both overlong, overwrought and ponderous.

And highly successful.

That's my point.

Look, I know some of you really want to see the big dog taken down a notch, but at least come up with reasons that aren't total bullshit conjecture. The only people who are talking sense are the ones citing the 3D bump as to why AVENGERS might hold on to the summer.

Might?  It will.

My guess?

Honestly? $200.5 million.

Just enough to beat the Avengers, but it'll be a round up.

Thing thing will have better legs though.

If THE AVENGERS keeps the top spot it won't be for being all bright and shiny feel-good, it will be because it squeezed more money out of you with a dogshit gimmick.

Batman will have an IMAX bump. You don't think that'll balance things out?

Didn't Avengers have a bunch of IMAX screens too?

From the LA Times (http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/envelope/cotown/la-et-ct-dark-knight-rises-tracking-avengers-20120716,0,4678609.story):

Several days before it debuts, "The Dark Knight Rises" is generating more audience excitement than the three-highest grossing movies of the last 12 months.

Pre-release research shows director Christopher Nolan's final Batman movie is exceeding mega-hits "The Avengers," "The Hunger Games" and the final "Harry Potter" film in the critical "first choice" category that studios use to gauge moviegoers' interest in their upcoming releases.

As a result, "The Dark Knight Rises" is expected to generate more than $180 million in ticket sales this weekend, according to people who have seen the data but are not authorized to speak publicly. It even has a chance, these people said, of beating the $207-million opening weekend record set by "The Avengers" in May.

"The Dark Knight Rises" is among the all-time highest scoring movies in "tracking" just days before it launches. The percentage of potential moviegoers who list the picture as their first choice among upcoming releases is six points higher than that of "The Avengers" on the Monday before it opened, and seven points higher than "Hunger Games."

My prediction is DKR opens with 206.6. And the explosion of rage from Batfans that it comes so close to beating AVENGERS OW will be deafening.

I'm predicting 207, based on nothing but a whim!

Including a well known poster here who scoffed at TDK doing more than BEGINS numbers.

That would be hilariously incredible if it happened.

I am a huge Bat fan (just take a look at the 3600 words I through out in movie of the day columns), but I loved the Avengers too.  WTF does everyone have the panties in a bunch for?  I guessed 208, but I still feel it may fall short of OW.  I would be surprised if it doesn't hold it's legs a little longer due to weaker competition.  Either way, I see both being winners at the end of the year.  I see it tomorrow night in Imax, and am planning on returning this weekend with another friend (there is a repeater for you, even though one is a screening).

I think Warner Bros. might be feeding a little bullshit to the media to hype everything up. Sure, midnight viewings are sold out in LA and Austin and NYC, but they aren't in my neck of the woods (Pacific Northwest), and there are still plenty of IMAX seats available for Friday (just purchased ours yesterday, for primetime 7:30 on Friday, and the lady said it wasn't even half sold). I also think there is some internet hype going on, which I never trust. More often than not pre-release "tracking numbers" do not live up to their potential.

I'm going with $175, max, for opening weekend. And I'm also betting this thing will not get the repeat views that TDK and The Avengers got, so I think it will max out around $415 million stateside, total BO. The Tomato Meter is dropping daily as more reviews come in, and to make Avengers and Titanic numbers, it needs women (in droves, for repeat viewings), which I would bet money it's not going to get. From all I have read and seen, it sounds (and looks) ponderous and overly-dramatic. Not my cuppa tea in a superhero film :)  I'll eat my shorts if it turns out different!

Oh, it's going to be a success, no matter what...success being that it will most definitely make all its money back and then some & possibly win (or at least be nominated for) some Oscars. If Avengers hadn't blown the lid off of all predictions (and still managed a nearly 1.5 million weekend 2 1/2 months after release, in only 747 theaters to boot), DKR would have been the box office king of summer...nothing to sneeze over!

I wouldn't say it's a lock that it sells more tickets. I wouldn't bet either way.

There have been a lot of straw man arguments here about the rivalry between Avengers and TDKR. A lot of people saying what people might say. This is the only comment on the entire page that actually denigrates the "other" movie.

The fanboys wouldn't sweat 206.6.  They'd say Avengers only has the record because of 3D, that TDKR actually sold more tickets, that it has a good shot at the overall record, yadda yadda yadda.

In short, they'll never shut up.

Except for little films like Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, Spider-Man 3, The Dark Knight, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, The Hunger Games, and The Avengers.  You know, little nothing films that managed to exceed tracking.

I think we need some action figures, and a sandbox.  Only way to settle things.

It wasn't a slam on THE AVENGERS; I loved the movie and was one of the only sane people who recognized that it was going to be massive (more massive than I predicted, in fact). It was a slam on 3D, which I think nine times out of ten is simply a way for studios to bilk more money out of people, which was sadly true in the case of THE AVENGERS as the film did not benefit from the post conversion at all IMO. I am rooting for TDKR to come out on top simply for the fact that everyone seems convinced it can't be done, and I want to see a bunch of people be completely wrong twice in one summer.

As for the "this film vs. that film" debate, I don't really see the harm as long as personal attacks aren't being thrown around. It's no different than arguing about sports teams. Who does it harm, exactly? Seems like a part of the fun in debating box office numbers.

If anything, The Avengers camp fired the first shot when several started arguing that Joss Whedon's Holy Film cured audiences desires to see anything dark, gritty, gloomy, cynical, serious, polio, AIDS, the common cold, or not filmed in bright four colors and wall to wall quips. There was a general attitude of "Whelp, nobody likes Batman anymore!" around the web for weeks; so of course it turned into Batman vs. Avengers, because the universe had a great idea and decided to stick three of the most annoying fandoms (Whedonites, Batfans, and comic book manchildren in general) in a box and start shaking.

No,because there are a lot fewer IMAX screens then 3D screens. You can easily set up a normal film theater to show 3D,can't do that with IMAX.
