If Scott pushes, I bet they'd throw him another just to stay in good graces.

But I doubt they'd really push another without an "oh shit" hook like having Weaver.

I don't see a studio (especially Fox) intentionally losing money to please a filmmaker.  That's kind of crazy.  They'll politely tell him it's not going to happen and offer him something else.  I'd be shocked if they made another one without rebooting or doing the alternate Blomkamp take.  The franchise is in the toilet.

Scott seems to have a billion movies and adaptions on his bucket list, I don't think he'll push too hard for another go in the Alien universe, especially since no-one seems to be biting.

I'm not surprised by the drop off, but I also wonder how much is contributed to bad WOM, everyone seeing it that really want to when it came out, and the competition of Pirates.

Either way, for Fox to let Scott have another one, how much money could they even hive him to work with? Compounded with his age, and whatever hook he is able to use to draw more people, like Ambler said, probably his last one.

...I'm seeing it tomorrow though, excited to know it won't be too packed.

With Covenant being such a bomb, a movie called Blade Runner 2049 is going to be a financial disaster as well.

What is the budget for that?

I feel bad for Villeneuve in a way. Dune will suffer.

I just don't know how you get butts in the seats for a 30 year later sequel to a cult movie.

The audience just doesn't care for what Ridley Scott is doing / is involved with anymore.

I think that's quite a jump to assume because Alien Covenant disappointed the same will happen to Blade Runner 2049. The box office for Prometheus is probably closer to what we'll see with that than Covenant.

Yeah, Ryan Gosling seems to have a fair bit of star power at the moment. I'm sure his involvement will put a few butts in seats.

"Cough" The Nice Guys. "Cough"

That's true. :(

I think it's totally fair to assume that. Ryan Gosling puts female butts in seats, certainly, but in a genre film that's a sequel to a movie that, and I don't want to offend movie fans here, casual viewers have never heard of? I don't know.

Like Felix said, Gosling AND Crowe couldn't draw with the Nice Guys.

Plus, the 2049 in the title is a mistake. I'm not saying the movie won't be good, all the talent involved points to the opposite, but I will gloat about my prediction this October.

2049 will at least do better in its initial release than the original did.

If Tron 2 can make money, so can Blade Runner 2.
Here's the thing: Tron Legacy proved that a sequel to a sci-fi cult classic can make money; that film managed to gross $400 million worldwide. The problem was that that film cost way too much at $170 million. The rumor is Blade Runner 2049 is $200 million. If true, I find it rather unlikely that the film will be anything near a success.

TRON 3 is coming!  SOMEDAY!

YOU'LL SEE!!!

YOU'LL ALL SEE!!!

AT SOME POINT OR ANOTHER!!!

Tron was a Disney movie. If you were a child in the 80s you knew full well what Tron was. Tron 2 came at a time when it's target audience was the perfect age to maximize the nostalgia.

I thought Tron 2 missed its prime nostalgia window by about 10 years.
