Patrick, as Quarant said before what's inspired this call for depressing music?

Buncha cry-babies.

Yes, I wholeheartedly agree with Dross, so go listen to Adore by the Smashing Pumpkins. I'll even summarize the album for you:
To Shiela: For those moments when your lover will never return.
Ava Adore: It is angry like NIN so skip.
Perfect: A bitterweet love song about how next time, things may be perfect.
Daphne Decsends: A ballad to sing before killing yourself in front of your lover.
Once Upon a Time: Death and loss of innocence.
Tear: Painfully about death, I cringe when I hear it.
Crestfallen: Very harsh words of a ruined relationship.
Apple and Oranjes: It may sound upbeat but the lyrics evoke a dead relationship.
Pug: Sounds angry but the words are sullen.
The Tales of Dusty and Pistol Pete: Fleetwood Mac sounding song of betrayal.
Annie-Dog: Bitter song about society, so skip it.
Shame: Literally evokes a lonely walk.
Behold! The Nightmare: Strong theme of tragic, gothic romanticism.
For Martha: A sad then uplifting song of death.
Blank Page: Another relationship song that is very painful to listen to if sad, it really fucks you up.

Neutral Milk Hotel- In the Aeroplane By The Sea.

Matthew Good Band - Apparitions

It's also a depressing (and excellent) video if you get to see it.

Ben Harper - Lonely Day

The Eels album Electro-Shock Blues is a beautiful downer. It was released after their front man E had a horrific year;

"After Beautiful Freak, E experienced a very difficult personal life. Some of his friends were dying, his sister committed suicide, and his mother was diagnosed with cancer. He was fast becoming the only living member of his family. These events inspired him to write Electro-Shock Blues, released in 1998. The lyrics deal with subjects like suicide, death, and cancer."

That oughtta do ya.

Also, In case you haven't heard it, there's this really depressing British song about a guy who sees this angelic girl on the subway, but he can never be with her, so it becomes time to face the truth. The fucking thing was on the charts for like twenty weeks, and the guy sings like he has a pinched seminal vescicle.

Fuckin' emo kids.

Uncle Tupelo Lilli Schull
Alejandro Escovedo - Five Hearts Breaking, She Doesn't Live Here Anymore

Bruce Springsteen - Nebraska

I know that some of these have already been mentioned, but some of my top recommendations would be stuff by the following:

- Tom Waits
- Morphine
- Jeff Buckley
- Fiona Apple
- Tori Amos

Any album by Swans - http://www.swans.pair.com/

Michael Gira and Jarboe will make you long for your own destruction. Their pain is gorgeous.

????

Wait, the song or the album? The song is pretty damn happy...

"What a beautiful face
I have found in this place
That is circling all round the sun
And when we meet on a cloud
I'll be laughing out loud
I'll be laughing with everyone I see
Can't believe how strange it is to be anything at all"

If you want a depressing Neutral Milk Hotel song, try 'Little Birds'

It's true he doesn't have a lot of songs where the lyrics are actually depressing (although the ones he has are gold, like 'Everything Goes to Hell' and 'Bad Liver and a Broken Heart') but even his non-depressing songs have a certain melancholy quality that's perfect when you want to drink and mope.

That's pretty much where I was coming from. But also, there is plenty of sadness and heartache in his lyrics. And I'm not just a casual fan. I own all of his albums and some live stuff too.

A lot of the Fruitbats stuff is down, but with a little hope thrown in there at the same time.

Tom Waites makes me want to be a better man. I hope that I don't fall in love with you is one of the most honest songs I've ever heard.

Yeah, I see Tom Waits having a certain melancholy to him, but not really "depressing"

I think my kid will have a "happy" Tom Waits mix CD in heavy rotation.

The Verve's "A Northern Soul".

Quote:
This is a tale of a Northern Soul
Looking to find his way back home
He's coming from that same old road
You know the one your folds don't know

I want to see if you know me
I was born in a rented room
My mother didn't get no flowers
Dad didn't approve of me, do you?

I'm alive with something inside of me
And I don't think I'm coming back
So come on come in inside of me
Let's spread it all around

Give me your powder and pills
I want to see if they cure my ills
I've no time for love and devotion

No time for old fashioned potion

Take a look into my eyes
I tell you so many lies and then I'll let you go into the night
And I don't think I'm coming down
I'm alive with something inside of me
And I can't seem to get it out

I'm gonna die alone in bed
This is a tale of a northern soul
Looking for his way back home
And my friend said, "Come in side of me
And your speakers are telling the truth
Coming through and into your room on a river of sound"

This is a tale of a northern soul looking for his way back home

And if he sees it I know I'll know [repeat]

And there's fighting on the street below
I know there's fighting on the street below
But I don't care 'Cause I'm a Northern Soul
And I'm looking for a way back home

Too busy staying alive [repeat]

Too busy living a lie, too busy living my life
Too busy staying alive

His first album had a good amount of sadness to it, but it doesn't sound like your typical Waits album either.
