CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST DVD question

On DVD Aficionado, the dvd by Grindhouse Releasing has listed under it's special features "90 minute animal cruelty-free version."

Can anyone who owns it confirm this? It's Amazon listing doesn't mention it, nor did the back of the dvd case (at least I didn't notice it). I've really wanting to see this flick, but I have no interest in seeing the animal killings. I'd definitely be sold on an animal cruelty-free version.

Yeah. I'm pretty sure that was a feature when I rented it off Netflix.

Is there a 'Jesus Saves' version?

Thanks a lot.

Yes, there's a 'For Total Pussies' version on there. Needless to say, I've never seen it.

Besides who the fuck would even want to watch that version.

People who aren't interested in being macho about movies?

I have no problem with staged violence whatsoever but the idea of watching a turtle get torn apart while alive for a good few minutes has always put me off seeing the film.

Well, all the animals that were killed on screen were eaten, so it wasn't wasted, I have no problem with it. I've seen pigs, chickens and deer killed and cooked, so it doesn't bother me to see it on screen. No offense was meant with my comment.
Yeah, unless you're a vegan fruitcake you're a pussy if you won't watch an animal killed for food.

They ate the turtle?

Now that brings up an interesting question for my own morality. I don't condone the killing of animals for entertainment, but I will eat meat as I view that as at least being a death which had a meaning. So would, morally speaking, watching an animal be killed on screen be still only for purely entertainment purposes if the meat was then used. Or is it still the exploitation of the death of a living, defenceless thing?

I'm an animal lover myself and the scenes in CH aren't really that bad, if anything they're tamer than scenes to be found in cheesier, lesser efforts like Mountain of the Cannibal God and Cannibal Ferox.

This is correct as well, it's done for food.

Turtle soup. But I have read that Ruggero Deodato, if given the chance to do it again would have opted, not to have killed any animals.

To be honest, I think I'm happier being a pussy. The film has never held any interest for me, I've seen enough footage of the shocking (non-animal) bits on documentaries to never actually have to see it. I do think the whole dick measuring attitude is a bit bizarre though. I just empathise too much with stuff to allow myself any joy from watching real people or animals get hurt or killed.

In answer to the original poster, yes, there is an animal cruelty-free version, which just uses branching to skip past the animal deaths in the film.

Presumably the animals were eaten, but I'm pretty sure they wouldn't have been killed even for food (at least not in the same way, by the same people) if it weren't in the script. I'm no "vegan fruitcake", but watching that coatimundi (referred to as a muskrat in the film) in its death throes was pretty disturbing the first time I saw it years ago, though I'm pretty desensitized now (I once watched the Budd Dwyer video on acid). Hence, I watch the full film, animal snuff and all.

Damn, they kill cute things too!

The cute things are the most delicious.

Beyond the shock value of killing animals onscreen, is this film really worth seeking out? I would have seen it by now if it were available at any of the stores where I live, but I've yet to find it anywhere.

And yes, I want to get the "animal cruelty" version.

Yes, it is, and not in a "this film is so bad its good way", it's genuinely good.

Cool. Now I'll try to order it through Suncoast or FYE. I was reluctant to do so before without having seen it, but I trust your judgement on horror, so now it's a done deal.

Thanks Johnny.

For me it's more an issue of suffering. I kill and butcher the animals that I eat, but they die instantly. I haven't seen the movie, so I have an open mind about it, and I would love to watch it as I've heard great things here, but if the animals suffer before death, then I'll watch the cruelty-free version.

Edited to fix grammar.

As far as the animal suffering is concerned, I doubt anything in CH could be as bad as the monkey torture scene in the original Faces of Death. I was horrified that anyone could do that to an animal. Yeah, the two couples at the table ate it's brains right out of it's skull immediately thereafter, but that didn't even come close to justifying what they did to that poor creature beforehand. I've smacked the shit out of people on occasion for doing far less (kicking a cat, dog ect.) but if I saw that kind of cruelty on an animal right before my eyes, I believe I'd have to go Hostel on their sorry asses.

I abhor animal cruelty, but I'm no fan of censorship either. I simply want to see this (and any other film) without some uptight douchebags thinking they need to cut the films balls off because it might make someone cry. I can take it, and they can fuck off.

You guys should watch Men Behind The Sun. Now that's how you do cruelty to animals.
Ironically, the people killed in the movie were eaten as well.

The monkey scene in Faces of Death was staged. A live monkey was used in early shots to establish credibility, but when the diners are whacking away at its skull the filmmakers use a fake head. If you watch it nowadays the fakery is obvious.

There's speculation that the cat/rat scene was faked.

Speaking of animal cruelty, here's something good for a laugh- Cat on LSD
post #27 of 31
I'm sure I'll get slammed for saying this but... I really wanted to like this flick but it's so poorly acted and edited that I can only hope someone has the balls to do a proper remake. It had the potential to be a classic for reasons other than guts and gore, it just never made it that far.

You're going to want to pick up the "Clear Conscience Edition", which comes with a piece of turtle jerky.

I think I remember why I stopped coming here.

Thanks to those who managed to keep their enormous cocks in their pants.

Was it because this isn't a place for those who like to keep their balls stored away on a shelf?
