Lord of the Rings Online - The Official Thread. - Page 2

I've stuck around the Shire for the past while only to discover that for the Deed of doing quests there the last 20 or so weren't even counting. I assumed it was a bug and sent the company a report. Haven't played since so I don't know the deal yet, but last time I reported a bug they responded right away asking for more info to help solve it. Really great service right there.

Did I already mention how amazing this game is?

A guy named Smeagol loving a Lord of the Rings game?

SHILL!!
great game but everytime i exit LOTRO it crashes my computer. Any way to stop this? Essentially i have to hard boot it cuz after logging out and exiting the screen turns to gibberish and remains that way.
I've got a pretty beefy system and it runs pretty slowly for a minute or two after the game exits. Any resource-heavy game tends to do that, so probably adding more memory would help.

Fuck! You caught me! I've been a sleeper agent shill in place for years until the game was finally released at which point I sprung into action to hawk this game!

I was hoping to be able to play as a hobbit and then get corrupted, but until that kind of thing is in the game (if ever), a Gondorian hunter I shall be.

Anybody in the Vilya server? I went to it 'cause they suggested it for newbies at the log-in prompt and I'm at level 21 so I don't want to switch, that's for sure.

How's monster play? Haven't done it yet.
One more reason to love this game. There is a character in the North Downs named Colbert the Mad.
And he really, really hates bears.
I went to the Prancing Pony and talked to Aragorn. Geeked out a little more than I probably should have.

I've returned from my vacation to the Shire. Discovered my kinsmates are 10-20 levels ahead of me. I have a ton of quests to finish in Breeland, but have started exploring the Lonelands instead.

Right now I'm being a whore with the auction house selling anything I can...made about 500 Silver on loot that's been sitting in my storage account. I'll probably turn around and buy iron ore to level up my prospecting/weaponsmith professions. Surprised at the turnaround for dye materials - have yet to find anyone who actually makes them or sells them.....or even applies them to their outfit. It's cool though that there are folk running around with steel swords crafted by bobcaygeon.

Coolest moment so far. Escorting a freaking tree to safety to the bewilderment of those nearby.

Is the consensus 2 GB ram is enough to run this thing well? Or more?
From experience, the more RAM you have the better, especially with MMOs. But going above 2 gigs is overkill. Going from 2 to 4 GB ram I hardly noticed an improvement, but from 1 to 2 GB it seemed as if I had done a full system upgrade.
Yeah, MMOs are gigantic memory hogs -- after I log out and close the game, my entire system runs a little slow for a minute or two. But 2GB should do you fine.
Just got my champion to level 20, and the Evendim content update did wonders for the game stability -- I'm almost on max visual setting with very little lag outside of Bree, and that goes away when I toggle off the floating names while in town.

What still strikes me about this game is how often I stop and just look around. I was running around the Weather Hills and there's the moon rising over Weathertop. I came down a hill into Bree and just stopped and stared at the buildings. Birds randomly take off and fly away. It's just a great looking game.
I'm level 13, haven't left the Shire yet, have spent the bulk of the last two weeks delivering mail and pies, and yet I cannot stop.
Also, fuck the beer crawl quest. Fuck it right in the ear.
Anyone know of any sites where you can purchase this online and download it? I can't find any, and the dvd player in my pc is on the fritz, so I don't trust it to install this...
Man, DVDR drives are like, a penny apiece now, Singer.
Yeah, I know, but the way my desk and pc are set up it's a major pain to replace drives, and I seldom use the dvd drive in my pc anyways.

Plus, I've been spoiled by Steam and Direct2Drive and the like.
Well, I ponied up for the boxed version, managed to get it installed over my network. As of right now, I've got a Guardian named Claude the Wary on the Gladden server. Still in the beginning phases, obviously, but we completed the Introduction quests last night. Really liking it so far, runs smooth and looks and sounds great.
Glad you're liking it so far, Singer, and grats on 'the Wary.' I usually manage to get 'the Undefeated' before losing my undefeated streak in some stupid way: be careful about falling off cliffs.

...jumping off Weathertop is also not a good idea.
Is anyone here on the Nimrodel server? I'm running into a lot of Fellowship quests now (finally got cracking on the Epic Quest line) and it can be hell finding group members in the sparsely populated Shire.
I'm on the Meneldor server, lvl 34 Hunter by the name of Maberiela. I'm currently looking at ways to whore myself out in order to put together enough gold to buy a horse, and trying to find a hunter who will let me hitch a ride to Rivendell so I can finish the rest of my scholar craft training. I love this game. I. Need. Help.
I'm tempted to pick this up as a secondary game to WoW. How's the combat system? It looks like it's got some neat stuff, but I'm still unsure if another MMO can really hold my interest. I still reload CoH every so often for like, a month or two, but beyond that, I usually nod off with them after a couple months of irregularly playing.

Lys, I noticed that Colbert the Mad does go on an on about the bears. Hilarious. I thought for sure we'd get a "defeat the godless killing machines" quest out of him.

Can you say when the next update will be launching?

I have joined a kinship now, a pretty nice one. No tryouts, you just have to be helpful to other players, basically. I've also been fellowing with a guy for the past couple of weeks, killing everything in sight. I found out the other day he's a marine. I'm running around this game killing shit with a marine. Awesome.

For the next few days I'm away on a business trip and far away from the precious...err...the game, but when I get back, I should have made enough silver in the auctions I posted just before I left to buy that friggin horse (YAY!) and hit lvl 37 soon thereafter with all the enhanced XP I'll have. WOOHOO!
Well, Claude, Bane of the Barrows is now level 22, and kicking ass all over the Lone Lands.
The Lone Lands are a great, fun zone, especially if you're going solo.

I ran the Retake Weathertop quest with a group the other night, let's just say the final battle was quite the shock.
I've seen people asking for help with that mission. What levels are needed for it? I'm assuming it's a fairly high-ranking mission. Is it part of an Epic Quest?
I think you get it around level 20 as part of a string of missions a ranger gives you. It's marked as a fellowship quest, and for good reason -- there's no way in hell you could finish it solo. Our group had myself at 23, a level 22, and four 24s and two of us died in the final battle. But it was an awesome "Holy shit!!!" moment.
"Holy shit" was exactly what I said (and typed to my fellowship) at that final battle too. I think that quest is rated way too low to complete it. I imagine there's been many a fellowship slaughtered on Weathertop. It's sneaky too, because if anyone leaves the arena area at the top, the monsters regenerate.

I was using Bane of the Barrows for a while, but I've got Foe of Night now. I think that was from defeating fell spirits in the Fields of Fornost, but christ, there are a ton of titles you end up with, it's difficult to keep track of how you got them all.

The Eye of Sauron

I hit Angmar last week, and got a taste of the Eye of Sauron. Completely wicked disorientation effect. Anyone who is at level 38 or 39 and hasn't gone there yet should check it out.
I'm 35 now, just finished up several quests in Rivendell, now I'm back in Evendim. Gotta work for a horse now. Never did get the the "Retake Weathertop" mission, but I've had several Fellowship missions that were impressive, nail-biting tasks. I dig this game.

Thanks a bunch man!!! Downloading it now
Thanks for the invite, Singer. I gave the game a shot last night, and this morning, but I'm just having a real hard time getting into it.
I was pretty "meh" at first myself, but after traveling and exploring a bit, and encountering characters and locations from the books, it started to get its hooks into me. I think I just appreciate an MMORPG that allows you to solo this much.

I doubt I'll be playing it a year from now, but I'm enjoying the hell out of it for the moment.
I guess I was expecting something different, but it feels just like playing WoW, except with Lord of the Rings stuff instead of Warcraft stuff. I got past the intro area, and I just don't really feel compelled to play much further than that, since I already have WoW, and I like that setting much better.

I do like that the Minstrel yell attack makes it sound like your guy is dying of acute kidney failure, though. That's amusing.

I guess if you have a spare invite, I wouldn't mind trying the game. I have WoW and TBC but I just got tired of it and quit buying timecards.

Invite sent, B Metal.

Oh, and I should add that I never played World of Warcraft at all, so many of the things some players might find boring or been-there-done-that in LOTRO are still new to me.

Well, to be honest, if I had the time I'd still be playing WoW. I will try LOTRO to see if it's something that I'd make time for, it has such a great mythos.
I know, I know, double post. But I'm really enjoying this so far, thanks for the invite Singer. I'm gonna try out a couple of the different classes today before I settle, but is there a consensus on what the best class is?
Of the few I played, Champion was the most fun. They play pretty much exactly like Rogues in WoW, with abilities that generate points, and more powerful abilities that you use those points to activate.
I'm back on WOW unfortunately since I can't get my friends to start LOTRO. And I was starting to get the hang of it.
I played a Captain up to level 10 yesterday, and I'm having more fun. The game's got a decent setting, and all the ideas it either borrows or steals from other games are good ideas, so I can't really fault them too much for it. I still wish it was a bit more of its own thing, but it's a nice, relaxing mish-mash of other game mechanics, with some pretty decent production values.
My main is a Champion (around level 27 right now) and they are a lot of fun to play, especially dual wielding. I also have a Hunter alt that's a lot of fun -- you don't have to worry about buying arrows at all, so you can just go to town with ranged combat goodness. There's some cool skills too -- there's one which does a quick melee attack that stuns your opponent, and while they're stunned you hit them with a bow shot.
I think I may try out a Loremaster when I get home tonight. Anybody have any experience with those?
Not personally, but I've heard from plenty of people that you have to be careful not to bring the World of Warcraft mentality to the pets Loremasters get. They're not really designed to work as tanks the way WoW Hunter pets are, and early on plenty of Loremasters were getting frustrated that their pets were dying so quickly or not holding aggro when that's not really their function.
My Herald pet is so cute when he tries to fight things with his little axe. Sometimes I just sit and watch him and cheer him on as he gets violently murdered by goblins, because he's just so darn sincere about the whole thing. Come on, flag guy! You can do it!
Loremasters are kind of neat. They're more mage-y than I was expecting, what with being able to cast fireballs right off the bat. That's sure to have some Tolkien nerd's panties all bunched up.
