Day Watch

Figured I'd start up a thread, seeing how it's only a few months from release.

The new poster is goddamn fantastic.

I'm a big fan of the first one of this hyper kinetic russkie trilogy, "NightWatch", so have been waiting for this one for a while.

Now if they can deliver "DuskWatch" before the end of the decade, I'll be happy.

Nice poster.

I actually haven't seen Nightwatch. Is it worth it ?

Yeah, I'm not too happy with the releasing of these flicks. It really take a year and a half to do subtitles? Sure, they're animated, but still...

I think so. It's a bit convoluted and hard to follow, as it runs at a fast pace with little if no explanation past the Daywatch vs. Nightwatch setup, but it's pretty visually arresting and the foreign element brings a nice change of pace from the traditional North American mindset.

I really disliked the first film, but I have to say that's a pretty great poster.

My Russian buddy says that much Russian cinema relies on the audience having a knowledge of the source material, so everyone there had read the book and knew all the details first.

Still pretty cool stuff going on in that flick, despite the kinda cliche "chosen one" plot. I definitely wanna see the sequel and more of a glimpse into the world.

My dad brought a copy of Day Watch home last year from Russia. It was all in Russian so and while my understanding of the language is ok, it wasn't enough to get the movie. Then again my dad didn't understand what the hell was going on either. I will say that I liked it better than Night Watch.

I'm very torn by NightWatch. On the one hand, I like the story and the visuals and I think there are a couple of outstanding sequences.

But there were also some pointless, indulgent effects sequences there just to showcase the effects. It was, however, redeemed by an awesome ending, ramping my anticipation for DayWatch. So i'll give it a go, but I hope they reign in the indulgence a tad and go all out on the story and drama.

And yeah, nice fuckin' poster.

I thought the first film was alright and considering that I've become pretty apathetic about movies recently (new ones, at least), I guess that's saying something. I do like the poster. The simple fact that it's not the sort of "Look At The Giant Faces Of The People In This Movie!" kind of poster makes me like it better than most other posters.

The trailer does irritate me a bit, though. Aside from it playing choppy on my computer, the delay they put on the narrator's voice is just cringe-inducing. However, the part where it says something like "They must find the one thing that can help them" and then they show a computer generated stick of chalk floating over a psychadelic sort of background I think is awesome. Probably not in the way they intend it to be, but whatever. I sound cynical. I had to get out of bed while it was still morning today and that always makes me grumpy.

Caught Nightwatch at a midnight screening when it came out quite by accident and fucking LOVED IT. Easily one of my favorite movies from the past couple of years. I've been desperate for Daywatch since I find out it was alive.
All the DVD versions I have seen of this film do away with the animated subtitles. I've been driven to madness trying to get a copy of the proper film
Madness, I tell you.

My thoughts exactly. I just saw this, and while there were HUGE gaps in my understanding of WTF was exactly going on, I got enough of it to thoroughly enjoy it. Easily the best Russian horror (sort of) movie I've seen (and yes, I have seen a few, having developed an interest in this subject). I'd definitely like to see the sequels.

Reposting from an earlier thread about the Wanted movie because I don't really remember why I don't like Nightwatch but all I know is I do. Like that kid who was mind-fucked to hate rabbits.

Just from reading that synopsis, you could see the fingerprints of the guy who made Nightwatch all over it.

Boring retread of prepubescent fulfillment fantasy? Check.

Nonsensical and undeveloped mythology masquerading as solemn philisophical fare? Check.

"Pulse-pounding action" that actually translates into boredom and me falling asleep? Too soon to tell, but I wouldn't be surprised it if did.

Fuck Nightwatch. And fuck this movie, too.
