I don't know if you cats have heard or not, but hip-hop's best living producer Madlib is coming out with an album every fucking month this year in a series called Madlib's Medicine Show. January's was Before The Verdict, a collection of remixes and new tracks with detroit MC Guilty Simpson(Gotta love that name). Feb's was Flight to brazil, a mixtape of Brazillian funk, jazz and rock. Next up is Beatkonductor in Africa, a 37 track beat tape using only African music samples.

Check it out here. http://www.stonesthrow.com

I haven't listened to Madlib outside of Madvillain, which I'm sure everyone here knows. I think I let my MF DOOM fandom distract me from the contribution of Madlib. I might have to check this out and rectify that.

On a side note, I recent came across a new source of music that I haven't had since OiNK died and now I am finally getting my hands on some albums that came out a few years ago. At the top of this list was Pharoahe Monch's 2007 release, Desire. He's probably the most unsung hero of the Rawkus era, but his delivery is among the best imo. It's nice to hear some new material from him, I was wondering for a while if he was even making music anymore. Internal Affairs is excellent, but 11 years between albums is a long time. According to Wikipedia, he's releasing an album this year that is a throwback to a more '94 style. Not sure what to think of that, I still throw on the '94 Organized Konfusion (his old group) album occasionally, and his flow and lyrics are still top notch, but the production feels incredibly outdated.

Forget to mention, loving the Gucci Mane track "Dope Boys". The mixtape makes me wonder why rappers haven't realized that no one gives a shit about the skits. Even the great skits on 36 chambers get old after hearing them a few times.
Kind of sad I was the last person to post in this thread. Nonetheless I will continue to do my part to bump this thread out of obscurity.

So I'm revisiting Get Your Mind Correct by Paul Wall and Chamillionaire. I'm generally a Southern hip hop skeptic, but based on how good Gucci Mane is as driving music, I'm going to see what my reaction is when this in my changer.
I want to check out those guys you mentioned. I haven't heard any Southern Rap aside from the popular names - Outkast, Scarface, Trina, Ludacris and T.I. for examples.

I've been on an old-school kick of late, but does anybody else love The D.O.C.'s, No One Can Do It Better album? It's one of the best rap albums ever and it climaxes with a great ensemble track featuring N.W.A. Unfortunately, D.O.C suffered a car accident not long after the album's release and it permanently affected his voice. Had he not had the accident, I could certainly see him having a prosperous career.

It's definitely one of the truly classic Hip-Hop albums - and as far as I know "The Grand Finale" is not only the last track on the album, but it's the last appearance of the original N.W.A lineup intact, and the last appearance of the D.O.C.'s pre-accident voice. Grand finale indeed.
No One Can Do It Better was my '89 album, no doubt. The D.O.C. was the real deal; the whole package. Could have been one of the great M.C.s.
Always loved Cube's verse on "The Grand Finale":

Picture a nigga that's raw
Amplify his ass and what you see is what's on
Muthafuckas I slaughter, blow em out the water
Word to me, fuck the father
My melody is deadly as a pin in a handgrenade
5 seconds before you get played
You can't throw me, I guess you'll blow up
Ever see a sucker scatter, it'll make ya throw up
Then I take advantage, you can't manage
To get up, all you can do is sit up, I get lit up
Hit up, Ice Cube tearing shit up
Like a dude you can bet on
Collide like a head on
Collision, stutter steppin is an incision
Of a nigga saying exactly what I vision
Because I'm gone, you think I left you all
But I stay in yo' ass like cholesterol
When I blast some solid ass alcatraz
And if you escape, you better swim fast
'Cause I'll catch ya, physically and mentally
And the capital punishment's the penalty
Sitting in the electric chair, grab a hold
Pull the switch, yo' body twitch, your eye's explode
Out your skull 'cause being dull on a flow
Is an N-O, niggas didn't know that I can go
Off and show off to throw off the law
Turn, take 10 paces then draw
What's left is a muthafucka dead in the alley
Ice Cube is the shit on the grand finale

Reading this right now. It's sort of diffuse, which can't be helped if you look at how varied and independent from each other the various southern scenes are; it'd almost make more sense to publish a series of thinner volumes each for Atlanta, Houston, etc. Still, extremley well researched, not at all snobbish (Arrested Development get a look in!) and overall a pretty good read. Early chapters point out that there's a few earlier Hip-Hop artists from the South that don't get associated with the region at all - DJ Premier, Vannila Ice (whom the book reminds us was discovered by Chuck D and would've signed to Def Jam if he hadn't gotten a more lucrative deal as a novelty act) and The D.O.C.

Right now I'm at the part where the Dungeon Family shows up. Great anecdote from Rico Wade about the actual basement the collective is named after:

Quote:
"It was under the kitchen floor - a crawl space with a dirt floor. We had a table, chairs set up, an MPC with dust all over it, keyboards, records all over. We put crazy lights down there, so we had the whole atmosphere. When it flooded we had to take the shit upstairs, because it warped. But the vibes down there were otherworldly. Sometimes we'd be down there writing - everybody talking, smoking a joint - then the drum machine would go on, and we'd be like 'what the fuck?' Because of the moisture in the machine, it used to go haywire. It would trigger samples, crazy shit."

I started listening to The State vs. Radric Davis. Love it so far, they make the mixtapes seem sloppy in comparison.

Some current faves (wish you could embed youtubes in this forum):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bgmbaQv3fCw

Nas & Damian Marley - "As We Enter". Awesome tag-team rapping.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c5FvUXlQtKA

Gucci Mane Feat. Pharell Williams - "Nah Nigga". Neptunes banger like it's 2003 again, Gucci goes in.

Couldn't find a YouTube for Playboy Tre's "Movin' Dem Keys", but it's a big epic ballad type track with some cool socially concious rhyming and a killer chorus.
It's not really hiphop per se, but the album by GONJASUFI was produced by Flying Lotus & Gaslamp Killer, who are making waves on the scene recently (hiphop, electronic & music in general). So I guess this is as good as any place on CHUD Music to mention it...
Think: a voice that's cross between George Clinton & Lee Perry, over a soundtrack that's part dubreggae, part early Funkadelic & part hiphop. It's not everybody's cup of too (but same goes for all FL output), but it's the one I've been spinning the most regularly last couple o'weeks. Anybody interested in that kind of gruffy sound should check out the Gaslamp Killer mixtape as well (with the very CHUD-minded name I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE): http://soundcloud.com/choicecuts/gas...-on-your-grave
post #363 of 426
The production on the Gucci album is so great, it is looking like an album that I can listen to start to finish, which is usually a rarity for me when it comes to mainstream hip hop.

Dude I'm really excited about for this year: Yelawolf. He's a white southern rapper with an ear for a hook and good taste in guest artists. Been bumping Trunk Muzik on the regular; stand-outs are "I Wish" and "Mixin' Up The Medicine".

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D_71X0yamsY

^^^^"I Wish", featuring Raekwon

Confederate flags I’m seeing
On a truck with the windows down, why’s he playing Beanie Sigel?
‘Cause his daddy was a dopeman
Lynyrd Skynyrd didn’t talk about moving keys of coke, man
Ain’t no such thing as a free bird

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Hlzbe9t4BI

^^^^ "Mixin' Up The Medicine" with Julez Santana. Sort of amazing that no one ever thought of switching up "Subterrenean Homesick Blues" before.

No Trivia brings the insights. There's also a New York Times story.

Anybody here fans of Brother Ali? Just started listening and am loving it so far.
My roommate really likes him and from what I've heard him play he sounds pretty good. This is probably a pretty superficial judgment, but his style doesn't seem terribly unique. I usually am reminded of someone else whenever I hear one of his songs.

So I started listening to the first Felt album, A Tribute to Christina Ricci. My response to it has been lukewarm, but it made me realize that Slug is who I assumed was Atmosphere; I didn't realize it was a rapper/producer duo. I've never been incredibly impressed by what I have heard from Atmosphere, so that is probably a factor in my disinterest. Anyone have a similar reaction to the first Felt album? As someone who is a fan of Aesop, should I just skip to the most recent album?

You guys should subscribe to this thread to help keep it active. Other than specific friends this is my best source of hip hop discussion.

Atomosphere is a group I've never really gotten into with one exception; their mixtape Strictly Leakage. Everything else, I've found to be okay, but nothing memorable.

RIP Guru
I'll be listening to Moment of Truth for the next week or so.
I love Atmosphere but I haven't found myself the biggest fan of the Felt trilogy. They just seem a little uneven. I'm with Chris Anthony that "Strictly Leakage" is becoming my favorite album of theirs it's just everything that they do right done well. Slug sometimes gets too caught up getting too deep in his lyrics. And while I liked the band in the background for "When Life Gives You Lemons..You Paint that Shit Gold", having Ant back making the beats on Strictly Leakage is just awesome.

I would say of his official albums the closest one to "Strictly Leakage" is "You Can't Imagine How Much Fun We're Having" which I wasn't too fond of initially but I've really gotten into it recently.
Personally, I dig all 3 Felt albums quite a bit, but I'd have to say that the first one is probably my favorite, possibly because of the brevity of it, but it was one of those records where the more I listened to it the more I liked it.

"ugly as fuck, beer gut, dandruff/too high to sit still, to drunk to stand up" - Hot Bars

I used to hate Atmosphere, and only bought Felt because I was a fan of Murs via his Def Jux albums. I liked Felt 1 and 2 so much that I bought Lemons and something just clicked. Now I own all Atmosphere's albums. I think Slug's rapping is deceptively simple when put up against Aesop, but the more I listened to it, I realized that he was actually pretty clever with how he puts songs together. Plus, I like the story-teller aspect. Aesop is amazing, but sometimes you want to listen to something that doesn't take as much thought to listen to.

"Diamond cutter spine/Armadillo armor that bends around the blades" - Bazooka Tooth

I agree with what everyone else has mentioned. Strictly Leakage is one of the best Atmosphere albums, even though it's a "mixtape". I got it at the same time as Lemons, and, honestly, have probably listened to it more. Definitely a highlight.

I somehow had no idea that Mr. Lif had a new album out last year, probably because I'm 'tarded. I listened to The Sun-- and was sort of surprised. Is it me, or does that song sound really, uh, well, un-Lif? I definitely need to listen to the whole album but the aesthetic of that song threw me off a bit. Can anyone vouch for the quality of the whole package?

From what I understand, he was on a mixtape* kick and was releasing a song a week about whatever he read in the news that week. Pitchfork didn't much care for it, so I never got around to checking it out. However, if you haven't already, I PHANTOM is a great album.

*I assure you, I listen to stuff besides mixtapes.

I read earlier that 50 Cent had all his tats removed, because he's tired of all the trouble it takes to cover them up for movie roles.

Is he still getting alot of film work?

Don't think I want my Hip-Hop Pitchfork approved.

When it comes to Atmosphere nothing can beat Overcast and Lucy Ford. I also love the Sad Clown EPs.

I think part of the reason it doesn't sound like the rest of his shit, is because he's not on Def Jux and working with mostly new producers(although there are some familiar names on it). First time I listened to it, it blew my speakers in my car, and I wasn't even blasting my radio. There is something with how it is mixed where the bass is a lot fuller sounding than say "I' Phantom". I listened to it on headphones and they started fuzzing out. As a result, I haven't listened to it as much as i would like, but it's actually a pretty solid album. Not his best, but definitely worth checking out. There are at least 5-6 great tracks on it.

These are highlights:

What About Us?
Folklore
Head High
I Heard it Today(sounds like Lif meets Radiohead)

Ray Abed already about SLEIGH BELLS Treats in a separate thread, but I really think that you all would be interested in it. It's more rock than rap, but just listen to Kids and tell me you don't see this being a mixtape staple for years to come. Warning; this album is LOUD! Best part about it is that all the songs are only .69 cents on iTunes and the album itself is only $7.

ATLANTA: There's a free Big Boi / Jay Electronica / Yelawolf show with 9th Wonder as DJ tonight at the Shriner's Temple on Ponce, across the street from the Krispy Kreme.

Supposed to start at 9. I guess I'll show up at 8 and hope it's possible to get in. The AJC has already posted it on their site, so it's no secret anymore, unfortunately.

Anyone else able to make it?

I can't believe you guys slept on the new Madvillain track! It's called "Papermill" and it rocks a great sample:
"Ettiquette....Spell it"http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Kmd9SxV6A8

ALSO, a new Kanye West track, "Power", has leaked. It may or may not be the new single off his next album. It seems to have been pulled from youtube, but here's the link to the pitchfork article.

http://pitchfork.com/news/38959-new-kanye-west-power/

I like it. Seems to reference the out-pouring public hate of him, which was expected.
This has been a huge week for new releases that are actually good. "Papermill" and "Power" are probably the best so far, but I've been adding a lot of new joints to my personal playlist at a furious rate

Eminem's "Won't Back Down" with Pink. It' really shouldn't be good, but it is, and Em has more than proven his worth as the best technical rapper this side of Pharoahe Monch.

Asher Roth's "GRIND" is hot, but he still sounds like a mini-Em

Jay-Z and Swizz Beatz - "Ultra" is kind of a phone in, but for a reference track, it works pretty well. It's for Diddy, so you know it's going to eventually sound like crap.

The Roots "Dear God 2.0" - yes it's a remake. Not as good as the Monsters or Folk version, but it works, just like "The Seed 2.0" worked. AND, their one with John Legend, "Doin' it Again" is out, and sounds fantastic. I think How I Got Over is going to great.

Plus, the new Cool Kids Mixtape is great and the Tanya Morgan's "Sandwhich Shop" Mixtape is fantastic, which is them rapping over all the Roots' interstitials from the Jimmy Fallon Show.

Drake's album is out in the wild, but I haven't gotten around to listening to that yet. I'll probably just buy it when it's actually released. Unlike most, I don't have too much of a problem with him.
Em's whole album leaked, apparently. Heard a couple of tracks on Youtube and from the sound of it, he's back in fine form. No dumb accents. No Love featuring Lil Wayne is trapped in my brain.
It's such a weird thing with Eminem, how gigantic a deal he was back in the early 00's and how much time was spent agonizing over his talent, his offensiveness and how the two were connected (or does it just feel like that to me because I was a teen and considerably more interested in these kinds of debates at the time?) It all feels a million years ago. So about the new material: I know Em has technical skills, but at this stage, does he have subject matter?
YES. It's probably the most introspective that I've heard him. Listened to the whole thing, and he spends a hell of a lot more time talking about himself, his issues, how Proof's death triggered his newest bout with depression and drug use, and his return to the game than he does making fun of others. He also acknowledges on a few tracks that Relapse was weak-ass sauce, and that he nearly made a Wayne/Kanye diss record because he was jealous of the attention they were getting while he was away. He's matured significantly, evidenced by the lack of skits and pop-sounding tracks like My Name Is. It's a great record. Not Marshall Mathers LP, but it's close.

Best tracks: 25 To Life, Space Bound, No Love, Not Afraid, Seduction

Meh tracks: That Pink collabo, the Rihanna one isn't very good either. I don't like Rihanna's voice, so that may be my issue with it.

I almost wrote him off, but he's coming back strong on this. I think people who were meh to Relapse will be shocked at how good this thing is.

E-40's new album Revenue Retrievin': Day Shift is utterly amazing. I haven't heard the other album, Night Shift, that he dropped on the same day but if it's as good as Day Shift he's got album of the year locked.
