My Big-Screen Movie Marathon

Next week, I've got a few days off, and in exchange for my hard work as of late, my bosses are arranging to let me borrow one of the company's video projectors for that time. I want to do nothing during those 72 hours but write and watch movies, and I want to watch movies that demand to be seen on the big screen, and the big screen only. I'll hopefully have my Netflix membership back by next week as well, so everything is fair game here. I'm intersted in hearing your reccomendations as to which films you think demand to be seen on the big screen, even if that big screen is a video projector against a wall.

Here's what I'm thinking so far. Of the things I own:

HEAT
PULP FICTION
GOODFELLAS
CON AIR
GLADIATOR
DAZED AND CONFUSED
ANGELS IN AMERICA (maybe, as it's six hours long)

Of the films I don't:

THE SEARCHERS
SEVEN SAMURAI
THE GODFATHER
LAWRENCE OF ARABIA
RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK
WEST SIDE STORY
RAGING BULL

RAIDERS would be a great on the big screen. I would try and watch all of the greats that I am too young to have seen in theaters.
Do you really want Con Air and Heat up there?

Searchers, Raiders and Lawrence MUST be on your marathon.

I'm sorry, but I must insist on Lawrence. I will be paying attention to see if you included it, and if you didn't I will be cross.

Watching the SE of HEAT on my crappy television recently was what inspired me to get a projector in the first place, so it wouldn't be fair to leave it out. I'm also trying to balance the quality dining with the fast food, though. CON AIR is topped only by BAD BOYS II for gloriously sadistic, over-the-top Bruckheimer goodness, and like Mattimus said, I'm sticking to movies that I haven't seen on a big screen. The one exception is GLADIATOR.

ETA to Matt: DAZED is a movie I love, and I want to watch again for research purpouses. The intent here is to revisit some of my favorite films, as well as a re-baptism in the well of cinema. After a couple of disasterous months, I've started to get back into movies again, and this time, really try and take it seriously, especially since I'm gearing up to hopefully direct my first film in August. So I want it to be an inspirational, educational experience, but also a fun one full of the films that were seminal in my development as a movie geek.

Is Dazed and Confused really a must see on the big screen?
And that's a big YES to Lawrence as well. Omar Sharif was never meant to be diminished!

The Good, The Bad & The Ugly.

Once Upon A Time in The West.

And yes, Heat.

I envy you Rath. I would love to have the opportunity to do this one weekend. I think I would have a BAND OF BROTHERS marathon myself. Perusing my DVD shelf, there are a number of movies I'd love to revisit on the big screen. For example, all three BACK TO THE FUTURE flicks. I know we have discussed them in previous threads, but that would be amazing fun.

I know when I am getting ready to tackle an animation short I immerse myself in animation. Recently, I have found watching Venture Brothers helps me to add some comedic beats to my work.

I just watched Kindom of Heaven the directors cut last night and WOW what a diference it makes. It was truly an epic.

Seeing Seven Samurai on the list also made RAN pop in my head, that is one I believe would rock the big screen.

Remember, 'big' screen doesn't have to mean 'wide' screen. The 1933 King Kong is a revelation when it's bigger than you.

Thirding Once Upon a Time In the West.

Too bad The Abyss hasn't received the 16:9 treatment yet, let alone HD.
The one movie I can think of that should never be seen any other way but on the big screen is Hero. Christopher Doyle's work makes my eyes explode.
No Kubrick? 2001 at least...

Carpenter composes for big screens, so anything of his would be the goods.

UNFORGIVEN

SUPERMAN (Donner's)
Both Alien and Aliens I'd seen a ton of times, but when I finally got the chance to see each projected in a theatre, it was like they were brand new. Now, I don't know if that'd apply to a DVD projected on a wall, but it'd be worth a try. (And you didn't say what your sound setup is; the theatre sound certainly made a difference as well. I hope your sound'll be worthy of your visual.)

I just saw Back to the Future last weekend at Chagrin Cinema. Definitely put that on the list.

Ghostbusters is a no-brainer as well.

Movies I have never seen on the big screen but should have (and have decent DVDs)....

Starship Troopers
Once Upon A Time In The West
Blade Runner
Kingdom Of Heaven: Director's Cut
Miller's Crossing
Die Hard
The Untouchables
Last Temptation Of Christ
Apocalypse Now
The Shining

Also, Police Story-era Jackie Chan is a blast on the big screen. But good luck finding a US release that hasn't been "Weinsteined."

Con Air? Really? I know its got "Bruckheimer goodness" (not sure if that's an oxymoron or not, haha) but it isn't even Michael Bay. If I was looking for something along that over the top, sadistic violence, I'd go with Crank or True Romance.
I saw Con Air in theaters way back when. I think it is the best way to enjoy such a guilty pleasure. Yeah, it's dumb as hell, but Colm Meaney DEMANDS to be seen on the big screen. That and Cusack's hippy sandals.

Jurassic Park

T2

Halloween

Citizen Kane

2001

House of the Dead
DEAD MAN

BRICK

THE BEAUTY AND THE BEAST

MY NEIGHBOUR TOTORO

REAR WINDOW

PSYCHO

I would kill to see these in a real life cinema.

I'd seriously recommend replacing Gladiator with this (well, the version that's spelled properly).

And I second the Crank takes Con Air move as well. Maybe Deep Rising? Hell, even The Rock would be a better choice.

Would it be too predictable/passé to recommend Fight Club?
Whoever mentioned THE SEVEN SAMURAI, yes, do it. A few years ago a theater here in town ran it, and I got to see it. This may not be a big deal for those of you who live in New York, L.A., or any other real city that has real theaters, but this was a big deal to me. I was the only one in the theater.

Yes, project that fucker on the wall and turn up the volume.
Rififi or T2 are my all time favorites. Dunno if that would help you, but I'd kill to see them on the big screen.

I have not yet been able to do this; it's looking like this weekend. However, I did go out and buy the single disc, cheapo edition of Lawrence of Arabia just for this event. So thanks.
JAWS and Close Encounters need to be up there.

Say no to Dazed and Confused. Good movie, but not projector worthy.

Any of the good James Bond flicks will work.

Stick with Gladiator. Kingdom of Heaven is a fucking bore thanks to zero charisma, Borelando Doom.
Brazil should be on the list. I don't know if anyone would agree wtih me, but personally, seeing Playtime on the big screen was one of the most enjoyable cinematic experiences I've ever had.
I'll echo the support for Lawrence and add Dr. Zhivago, Ben Hur, and Sparticus all of which I have been fortunate enough to see on the big screen in various revivals. I'll also throw som support to How The West Was Won and Reds.

I got a 60" TV not that long ago (and given the small nature of my apartment, that's basically my entire field of view) and have been watching HD movies on it regularly ever since.

I watched the HD versions of Unforgiven and The Searchers, and definitely preferred The Searchers. The Blu-ray of that was frickin' pristine. Just gorgeous.

I watched the director's cut of Kingdom of Heaven and that was just kind of 'meh.' Gladiator on the other hand felt pretty epic. I'd also recommend Hero. That movie with it's awesome visuals is amazing on a big screen. Pretty much any movie by Zhang Yimou is worth watching on a big screen though.

Having just seen Die Hard on a big screen while I was waiting for Hot Fuzz, I'd recommend that as well.

We're all(just me) dying of suspense (mildly curious) Rath, did your weekend happen? What was the final line-up?

It didn't happen, sadly. There were a number of screw-ups in getting the projector, despite my having bought LAWRENCE and the Director's Cut of KINGDOM OF HEAVEN on the cheap. And I can't even bring myself to watch those on my crappy tv, so they shall forever mock me/sit on my shelf. However, one of my things for this summer is to run a movie for my co-workers once a week, so I may get to see those soon after all.

Thanks to everyone who contributed reccomendations.
That's to bad it didn't happen. It would have been a blast I'm sure.

I love introducing movies to people, good luck this summer.
