Anyone a golf fan?

Is anyone a fan of watching golf? I like to play so watching it is pretty fun. The Byron Nelson Classic was on the Golf Channel this week and I thought it was a pretty good tournament.

I hate to fall into the stereotype, but I pretty much only find myself watching when Tiger is contending.

No.

As great as it would be to have a 53 year old former champion best known for choking majors away and more than a decade past his prime possibly win the British Open, in the wake of Tiger's injury the main question was who in golf would step up and take some of spotlight? Apparently the guy most up to the challenge is... a 53 year old former champion best known for choking majors away and more than a decade past his prime.

Even if it doesn't speak well for today's golfers, I'm rooting for the guy. I mean, he certainly needs the money.

I'm a golfer and I love to watch it.

I am a Tiger fan, but I can watch other golfers as well.

My all-time favorite player was Paine Stewart though.

I grew up a Greg Norman fan so the past three days have been great. I dread how he is going to top Van de Velde.

I usually cheer against Tiger. I'm a Yankees fan and how many front runner can one support? Plus, he's black.

Once my Dad tied I kind of drifted away from golf into Hockey.

Shame, although I still love to play.

Man, golf rules are just dumb sometimes. If only Johnson had made that putt, Jim Nantz might have started crying after the ruling. But man, what a lousy break for that guy... especially after falling apart in the US Open a few months back.

Yeah, it sucks, but the rules are the rules. He unquestionably broke one.

And so did probably dozens of other golfers who didn't have the misfortune of being in the final pairing with dozens of TV cameras trained on them.

That was really sad to see, I was rooting for Dustin. But the golfers are given a local rules sheet on day one, and this item was at the top of the list:

"All areas of the course that were designed and built as sand bunkers will be played as bunkers [hazards], whether or not they have been raked. This will mean that many bunkers positioned outside of the ropes, as well as some areas of bunkers inside the ropes, close to the rope line, will likely include numerous footprints, heel prints and tire tracks during the play of the Championship. Such irregularities of surface are a part of the game and no free relief will be available from these conditions."

Still, hard to blame Dustin for not recognizing that his ball was in a sand trap. Kind of looked like just a gallery area with trampled and worn away grass. Oh, and an area strewn with trash.

My point being that a lot of other golfers probably grounded their clubs in questionable bunkers and didn't get called on it. The one guy who did probably got pinged solely because CBS had half a dozen cameras on it when it happened. And none of the commentators even thought there was the possibility of a penalty.

Bottom line, I'm fairly sure the rule wasn't universally applied. And to apply it at that moment not only took the spotlight away from the two guys in the playoff, it made the PGA look like a nit-picky bunch of uptight fuddy-duddies. Especially when you had about a hundred people standing in that "bunker" along with Johnson, to the point where he couldn't tell it was a bunker.

It seems to me if it comes down to a rule official's judgment call, then that rules official should also be able to make the call whether it gave him a competitive advantage or not. Especially if they're essentially using instant replay to check for the violation. Maybe there was nothing they could have done in that moment, but it is a failing of all of these sports (*cough* baseball) that they continue to avoid applying technology in the simplest, most straightforward way to their set of rules.

Whats everyones thoughts on the Ryder Cup. I know virtually nothing of the US team, so just wondering if you folks think they are looking the stronger of the two?
