Church and your local movie theater

This is more of an observation rather than some deep topic but maybe it is a deep topic to some of you...

Yesterday morning (Sunday Morning) as I was cruising the Brier Creek parking lot in Raleigh, NC with my wife and son we noticed that the movie theater was housing a Church service at 10 am.

Then I found this article in the News & Observer

So rather than get into deep religious aspects... I would just like to ask what people thought of Church in non-traditional places, like the Movie Theater!

I've seen a few churches that have taken over shut-down theaters, but never one sharing the space. There is a church that holds their services in a high school auditorium near where I live, though, that strikes me as all kinds of wrong.

Wonder if they have surround sound up in that bitch. Hear a choir of angels surrounding you as you sing ridiculous songs.

When I managed theaters, we had several churches who would rent out a one theater for Sunday morning services. It was a great money maker, so much that our GM's job was to get out and try and recruit churches. It was typically a group of people who had split from another church and were waiting to build their own building.

When we (AMC Theaters and my fellow staff) opened up the Cantera 30 in Warrenville, IL we had three churches going at one time - in different parts of the theater (with daycare's in other parts). The only thing that sucked was being the manager who had to come in at 7:00am and open the doors. As a theater manager, your day should never start at 7:00am.

Seeing "2001" on the big screen- now that's church. Perhaps this sort of practice, churches renting out theaters, can create some collusion.

I've seen churches held in all kinds of places. No reason any auditorium can't be used for any large gathering.

In one town where I lived, they actually had an "Interfaith" center. It was built by the city to hold assorted small religious meetings by any group (and also be, for example, a place for townspeople to vote that wasn't an elementary school). I thought that was a pretty cool idea.

Well we have the opposite here; a church doubling as a movie theater.

I stayed overnight at my church as part of a homelessness awareness event (I slept in a car! Now I understand the terrible pressures these people must face!) and since everyone there was either 40 or 8 (don't ask me) I sorta kept to myself with my portable dvd player trying (again, roughing it!) to watch 2001: A Space Odyssey for my cinema class. The events coordinator, who's a cool enough guy if a little too friendly (you know the type of Christian that's always smiling and talking like you're his good friend. It's a silly thing to complain about but it gets on my nerves, since I can never muster up the same amount of energy when I reply) offered to drag out the projector so we could watch it on a big screen. Needless to say, that night went from annoying to awesome, as I got to see 2001 on the big screen.

Why?

Because they are creationists.

I know there is a huge service that happens at the Paramount in Toronto each Sunday. I talked to a girl who goes, she said it's kind of like a rock concert, and it's aimed at younger progressive Christians.
