I saw these on IFC awhile ago and they didn't live up to the hype. I've heard how evil these movies are. They just seem like average Hammer type movies. Not to say I didnt like em. Best Spanish film this side of Del Toro

I saw most of the first one. It was delightful. Definitely a bit evil though...

The Coffin Joe movies are Brazilian, not Spanish.

And Del Toro's Mexican (closer to Spanish than the Portuguese Brazilians, but still...)

I find Coffin Joe a bit dull to be honest. Shocking in the way Jean Rollian pictures are, I guess, which is not very. Interesting, more than invigorating. He represents the essense trangression, I suppose. That's his epitaph. But things have really moved on quite a bit since the days he did that.

And if that sounds a bit like saying Citizen Kane is dull now because Kubrick uses deep focus more audaciously, I'd qualify by submitting that, unlike titan of the genre/era (Bava, Freda), Marins was never about anything other than trangression. He wasn't pushing the boundaries of technical smarts, that's for sure. Jess Franco has more narrative drive and ability to compose sequences, really. Which is saying something.

There's a short film called Love For Mother Only by a guy called Denis somthing (he's scripting Marins' comeback project) which is a truly innovative and exemplary piece of Brazilian filmmaking.
