The Vanishing

Holy fucking shit, what a great movie. I can see it's influence in movies like Zodiac, dealing with obsession, but this is just a perfectly realised film from concept to cinematoraphy to acting to everything. I dunno why no one ever told me about this film, but don't wait to see it.

I'll be able to better organize my thoughts in about 15 minutes or so, but needless to say, I loved the shit out of this movie.

Kiefer Sutherland/Jeff Bridges? That one? Not even sure if there is another movie with the same name, but it just sounds like there would be more than one. If so, I agree. I also think it should be included in the 100 best kills.

Sutherland/Bridges is a remake by the same director of a Dutch/French film by the same name. (Well, in Dutch it's called SPOORLOOS.)

Original = amazing.

Remake = shit.

I'm talking the 1988 original. It's one of those amazing movies that is so perfect in it's narrative construction that just going back and thinking about it is a satisfying experience. I put this under Creature Corner because, even though it really doesn't fit any one genre, the scenes with Lemorne practicing his abduction techniques chilled me in a way no other film has since Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer.

I'll add it to my wishlist. I forgot I wanted to see this movie.

I saw this when I was about 14 and I wouldn't say it scared me, but it definitely creeped me the fuck out and the final scenes were among the darkest and most perversely satisfying I have ever seen in this genre.

My older sister saw the remake in the cinema and said that it was one of the scariest films she had ever seen. I watched it about 5 years ago and thought it got wrong everything the original got right and even the normally awesome Jeff Bridges was cack.

Definitely worth checking out for anyone who likes horror films that chill rather than gross-out. In many ways, its an excellent companion to Clouzot's Les Yeux Sans Visage (Eyes Without a Face) which also deals with obsession and an unhinged but brilliant scientist-type. Just don't expect to be a particularly merry person if you watch them back-to-back...

Yeah, it really is a great flick, but it unnerved me in such a way that I don't know if I ever want to watch it again.

I haven't seen it in a while but *SPOILERS AND IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THIS MOVIE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD DON'T RUIN IT FOR YOURSELF* does Kill Bill part 2 mimic that long 360 pan inside the coffin when Beatrix is buried alive? </SPOILERS>

I've been wanting to see this for a long time, but the DVD is expensive (£20), and does not fall in price.
I'll get around to it when money permits.

Is also an immense annoyance that Les Yeux Sans Visage has yet to get a UK DVD release. Or Ugetsu.

Trust me Xagrath it's worth the 20. Judging from the films you post about I'd say this is the sort of film you'd fall in love with and the last ten minutes are just incredible creepy and borderline terrifying.

Bridges is never cack, man! I think he's just in the wrong movie. It's been a while since I saw this one but if I remember correctly there's moments when he's clearly playing it for laughs.

that IS an excellent kill, too (Bauer would be proud). the remake isn't good for much otherwise, though. Sluizer cops out in a way that Haneke clearly isn't going to in his Funny Games remake.

Bridges was awful. What was with the accent? Where was he supposed to be from?

"I'm Bar-Nee." Did that remake not effectively kill that director's career?

Also sucking about that remake: In a way, the trailer for it spoils the original.

Which, in this movie, is the fucking definition of cack. There's nothing funny about that character.

fair enough. Bridges is generally pretty great though and I'm having a hard time trying to remember other cack performances of his. maybe he thought the script was a black comedy, maybe there were language barrier issues with the director or something. I don't fucking know. all I know is I laughed with Bridges and not at Bridges more than once, and now that I think about it, I liked the way he alternated between predatory and pathetic.

what is it he said to that cop in that screwy/whiny voice of his, "I have a doctor's note!" or something? that cracked me up.

This thread has convinced me to bite the bullet and order a secondhand copy from Amazon.
Hopefully, it should arrive soon.
