The Second Sunday of May

Mmk, let's set aside the general feeling of disgust towards commercially-born holidays like Mother's Day. I, too, find myself sighing in exasperation when the spring months arrive because of the multitude of money-leeching, strategically placed events that corporate America has taken advantage of in an effort to keep first and second quarter numbers up.

This time, Mother's Day happens to come along right as my mother is finishing nursing school. She went back to college a couple years ago, and she's earned her RN and already lined up a job at a pretty nice hospital over in Aggieland.

So good for her, I say.

But I need to say it with something.

...aaannnddd the best thing I can come up with is chocolate-covered strawberries...

eh?

Longhorns jersey.

Actually, I've been having pretty good luck finding stuff for my mom at local street vendors. Lots of cool and unique jewelry (that she could wear under her scrubs!) at a much more reasonable cost than a Kohl's-type department store. Don't know if your ma is in to that kinda stuff...

...oh a Longhorns jersey! That's so diabolical...

We don't have convenient street vendors up here in Temple...but I will be in Austin this weekend. Any suggestions? I'm familiar with South Austin...

Shit yeah. South Congress about a half mile south of the Congress Ave. bridge usually has a few spots set up. Also north on Guadalupe in the campus area. Right around Guadalupe and 25th-ish. What's nice is that in both of those areas there's usually a half dozen different vendors sellin' crap. Jewelry, pottery, painting n' stuff.

Television tells me I'm supposed to buy my wife a diamond necklace for Mother's Day.
Freud would have a field day.

Since she's going to be a nurse she'll probably need some comfortable footwear. If only there was some trendy item that would make all the time she'll be spending on her feet as comfortable as possible. But where is there lengthy discussion and analysis about such an item?

I called up my sister and suggested we go in together on a gift for mom this year. That's convenient code for: "You pick something out, get it, wrap it, and give it to her, then I'll send you a check for half."

If I ever saw her in those, I'd commit seppuku.

I haven't been around long enough to participate in the Chewer gift exchange, but why not float a Chewer Mother's Day gift exchange? Refresing AND exciting. With fabfunk gone, what's the worst thing that could happen to your mom?

Holy carp, thanks for reminding me. And everybody knows the best thing to give a nurse mom is a carpload of homemade CDs for their 7am commute home so they don't fall asleep at the wheel. Cheap and thoughtful!

Never mind. My suggestion was already made.

They really are very comfortable, you know.

I don't trust any of you with my mother.

She even had little butterfly attachable accessories. They fit into the holes.

What colour were they? I hear if they are black they are nigh on invisible.

No, I didn't. I have no idea why I lied about that.

Anyway...this year, I got her a pair of earrings. They're not expensive or anything. Beaded things that were handmade and wrapped in some kinda silver wire dealio. I've been on this give-beaded-jewelry-as-gifts-for-everything kick lately and it seems to be paying off with the various recipients.

Which is great b/c beaded jewelry is extremely cost effective.

I go round, make her breakfast and a cup of tea and generally make myself useful for a morning. It's very cost effective.

Sounds ideal -- I'm moving into a new place this weekend, but I'm visiting her next weekend to give her the earrings. I'll hit the grocery store first and get omelette fixins.

I take her out somewhere she want's to go. Which is usually a Garden centre (which I hate).

Since getting married I now have to do two mothers days (one for my mum and one for the wifes.)
They both like Garden Centres, so does my wife, I mus have done something wrong in a previous life to deserve that.
