Gamestop has collectors editions available for preorder now. Comes with pip-boy bobble head, art book, making of cd, and it all comes in a nice fallout lunchbox. I cant find any pictures of what any of it looks like though. Regardless, my order is already in!

Dammit, I knew I should have hit up eBay earlier. GameStop has the details on the collector's edition of Fallout 3 due out this fall, and some of the contents look rather familiar. For $20 more than the normal edition ($79.99 console, $69.99 PC), you'll be receiving the much-coveted Vault Boy bobble head in all its encephalitic glory, a hardcover Art of Fallout 3 book, a Making of Fallout 3 DVD, and the game itself. All of this comes neatly packaged in a completely customized Fallout 3 lunch box, which I now have in both broken and non-broken varieties, thanks to the lovely folks at Bethesda. This is one collector's edition that seems well worth an extra $20, unless of course you already own half of it.

Dammit, i want that so bad...but Id have to purhcase in the US, since collectors edition rarely arriver here, thus meaning that ill have to wait to play the game till someone i know comes here....still, so, so tempting.

I just hope they improved their animations skills cause Oblivion - as good as it was as a sandbox game - had some seriously bad character animations.

Oh and I want that hilarious, glitchy Radiant AI shit back! Sneaking around in a tavern stealing apples ("THIEF!") or just causing general mayhem made playing Oblivion worthwile. The fun I had with getting guards who chased me to attack other citizens generating a townsquare massacre was the best part. I really hope they expand on the random chaotic AI reactions and not restrict them to standing around giving quests.
I want angry villagers to attack each other with the nuke gun

The previews going around for this have me salivating like the Alien. Everything, from the character creation to the combat to the atmosphere seems spot on. Does anyone know how Bethesda handles beta testing? I'd seriously consider trading organs or/and sexual favors for a chance at entering.

Zur also did good work on Icewind Dale II. He's not my favorite composer, but he's really good.

I'm disappointed that they didn't get Mark Morgan back for the third installment, or at least grab Jeremy Soule, who works well with Bethesda. Morgan's work on the Fallouts and Planescape was nonpareil.

Question: Will it run on Windows XP or is it Vista only?
I am getting a new computer that will have enough hardware to run it, but I want to continue to run XP consdiering the horror stories I have heard about Vista.
I think most people in the thread are probably going the console route on this. I haven't heard anything on the PC side about it though.

Have they announced whether it'll be DX10 or not? I actually just ordered a new desktop--for work mostly--that'll be sporting a 8800GT but coming pre-loaded with Vista. I'll probably end up dual booting XP and Vista ... and possibly trying to throw Linux or OS X on there though.

Either way, the thought of dealing with graphics card issues again with gaming makes my head hurt. It's so much easier on the console side, pop it in and play.

It'll work on XP or Vista, according to them. It's going to be one of those Games For Windows titles.

And I believe it will be DX10.

But yeah, even they're admitting that they're focusing on the console side of things. It's where all the money (and players) are nowadays, anyway.

If I can con my wife into letting me use the Pip-Boy as my permanent alarm clock, I'll be one happy stunted manchild.
Amazon link's broken, Alex.

How in the hell else am I supposed to frantically pre-order so that I can get that awesome clock?
Actually it looks like Amazon itself is broken! Try going to the site! Weird.

Minsky, I'm trying the same with my fiancee. She gave me a strange look when I showed it to her.

Its in times like these that I hate living outside the US....and I hate those that do.
Still, lovely pckage, but ill settle for the chance of getting the collectors pack over here.

Goddammit, you broke Amazon.

I almost want to go to NMA-Fallout to see if they're howling about the Pip Boy clock raping their childhood or something equally apoplectic and nonsensical.

I have a feeling it has something to do with the MGS4 PS3 bundle. At least, amazon it was working fine until about 5 minutes after they opened it up for orders.
I don't know shit about Fallout and even I want that Amazon set. It's keen.
Thanks for the heads up, I've ordered it and while a steep price it's totally worth it!

And if it doesn't have alarm clock functions, I can take it to work and make my co-workers jealous, even if they don't know what it's from!
For those of you have not played the original 3 games, they are available on a DVD ROM ,updated to work on XP and Vista (although I never had a problem running them from the original CD's on XP).
No attempt has been made to upgrade the graphics or change the games, they just guarateed you can run them on a State of the Art computer.
Highly recommeneded.
Damnit! I need to see system requirements for the PC before I pre-order!!!! I will have this survival edition!!!!!!
You will probably need a pretty good computer to run it, although you won't need a top of the line gaming computer.
They have announced in the forums at Bethesda that it will run On XP and will be a Direct X 9 game, which makes sense, since Direct X 10 is pretty much for Vista only.
I'd almost wager that if you can run Oblivion without a hitch on your PC, you'll probably be fine with Fallout 3.
For once this is news i probably would have been happy not hearing. Or atleast my wallet would have been happy.

Its such a great time to be a game nerd though. They are giving you so much awesome stuff with these collectors editions now. I can only imagine what my parents are going to say to me when i tell them how much im spending on a game though.
Has anyone been able to find some solid details on the pseudo-turn-based combat? All the previews I've been able to find regarding this aspect of the game have been pretty vague about it. The idea of a next-gen turn based RPG seems pretty appealing to me, what with all the talk of the "cinematic kills" that take place when in the turn-based mode and such. The most I've heard about Fallout 3 is that the combat system works as a hybrid of sorts, which I guess could work pretty well. I'm assuming that this will allow for maneuvers like taking cover in real time and then popping out for some pseudo-turn based hijinks. Or not, depending on the details.

Also, I've never gone for these special edition deals, but I will admit that that PipBoy clock is pretty neat. Still not gonna buy it, though. I refuse to even accidentally come into possession of one of those shitty "making of" discs...

There is a Q&A up in the Bethesda forums that really makes me excited for this game to finally come out.

And once again the Bethsoft forums prove themselves to be a breeding ground of fanboy rage.

So, if you like JRPG's youre a pedophile, and if you like ARPG's, you're a child killer?
The only wa to win is not to play, it seems.

PS: Incremental stats boosts from clothes sounds great...black leather did boost Mad Max's badass stat, right?

I'm pretty sure that if you've ever rolled a dice then you're at least a partial misanthrope.
I'd rather a paedophile be playing a game than, you know - be out fiddling kids.

EDIT: I'd obviously rather have them shot. But, you know.

I think its time to take traditional sports then...worst case scenario there is man on man violence or public streaking.

Fallout 3 IGN hands on.

Oblivion fans rejoice! Oblivion detractors, commence bitching!
Unfortunately it looks like they decided it was better to just screw over the PS3 players by making the DLC content 360/PC exclusive.

Hey, I've got an idea, instead of having someone to pay you to not let your fans play parts of the game you just make sure everyone gets to experience it? Wouldn't that be a crazy?
Fuck, I hate having to buy this for the 360. Mine's ready to blow, but I'm not passing up DLC for anything.

Still, as with GTA, I'm not fully convinced that PS3 owners will get hosed. We'll see.
Yeah, I mean they may do it Shivering Isles style and sell it as a standalone disc. Then it wouldn't be DLC but rather an expansion pack. That's still stupid though.

I really want to play Fallout 3 on the PS3. I don't want to listen to the horrible sounds of the 360 for the 100+ hours the game will take. Of course, I still haven't beaten the first portion of Oblivion (please don't turn me into a vampire in Fallout 3) so I can probably live without the DLC. It just pisses me off that they are letting someone pay them to not have people play the new content.
FFXIII going format neutral I can deal with. Another fucking company only offering one console DLC?

Cunts.

EDIT: Ahh who am I kidding. I would have sold GTA4 before it got content published on the 360, dunno why a Bethesda title would bother me any more.

Let's wait see what kind of content it is first. If it's substantial and charged-for, the torrent guys are gonna go crazy...

The post-apocalyptic combat looks absolutely amazing. Now show me something about post-apocalyptic role-playing strategy please.

I really like: the insane cleaning robot.

I really dislike: no ammo?!!? It's the apocalypses, bullets will be more valuable than food and water!
Still not sold on the two game perspectives, but if the gameplay is as great as it looks and the gameworld as huge as weve been promised, i will buy this on release day and play until my eyes bleed.
Yeah, Fallout does that to me...im not proud.

Good work, Alex! now if only this was released ASAP!
Great article Alex, I was kind of nervous after the usually quite reliable Eurogamer kind of savaged the game in their preview.
I knew a few people were disappointed with the demo, actually. Not that it was bad or didn't control well, but in that it didn't show off enough of the rest of the game for us to get a good impression. Starting us off near the beginning doesn't really show you what you're in for, and a half hour with this game really isn't enough to try out everything you'd like to.

But I really think people's enjoyment of this one will completely hinge on whether they dug Oblivion or not, because it controls and moves exactly like that game. But instead of a lame fantasy setting it's got the feel of the Fallout games down right. The in-game radio helps out more than you would think, and the Pip-Boy makes checking out your inventory, stats, and everything else incredibly easy.

Also forgot to mention that they handed out Nuka-Colas after the demo. Tasty!

Raiding a supermarket for supplies and then getting attacked by Raiders sounds excellent.

Were there more concentrated mobs in this one? In Fallout you would occasionally have to fight big groups of enemies at once, something that rarely happened in Oblivion.
Yeah, much more. Thankfully the VATS system allows for you to be able to handle multiple enemies. I don't think I faced more than 3 at a time in the school, but they were all clustered there. Really felt like they were using the school as their base. And from the look of screenshots showing off later in the game (like the last one I used in the article with all the ghouls advancing) hopefully the groups will get bigger as it goes on.
So does the VATS system make the game too easy? Because I can see how that would make the game a cake walk. I think I remember them saying something about how you can only use that for a limited time, and then it's got to recharge. Is that still in the game?
