Republican debate!

Tonight 8PM EST
The 10 (!) Republican candidates will go head-to-head. Will it be a Bush Bash-a-thon or a Bush-blowjob-a-thon?

Also, it's at the Ronald Reagan library so you better believe they'll mention him several times.

Maybe Mike Gravel will sneak in and shake things up.
I completely forgot there were Republicans running. It's been nothing but Clinton and Obama for months now.

10 of em? Interesting. Sounds like it'd be more of a grand melee. I'd pay money to see that.
It will be just like the Democratic debate. Three frontrunners trying not to make any mistakes. One old firebrand hoping to shake things up. And the rest just glad there are tv cameras pointed at them for the first time since announcing their respective candidacies.
Considering there's a huge jet in the building, I'm betting it's a 9/11-a-thon.
I've only flipped this thing on a few times and Reagan was brought up a bunch. The over/under on his name being brought up should be 20.
I will state that the repubs now have their answer to Dennis Kucinich.

U.S. Rep Ron Paul

The "interactive" viewer-suggested questions made for excellent television; watching Giuliani stumble over the differences between Sunnis and Shiites and Gov. Thompson's vague estimates of American Iraq casualties was engrossing.
They invoked RR's name 19 times! All that talk and none of them said a damn thing.

- Mayor Rudy came off kinda limp.

- McCain continues to prove he's senile.

The rest were assholes.
How many times did Guiliani say something along the lines of: "When I was Mayor of New York during 9/11...."
Missed the whole thing, how did McCain do?
Is the Squiggly line Express running off a cliff?
MSNBC.com has it up on the main site.

Gleaned some tidbits from the Daily Kos coverage: at least 3 of them "don't believe" in Evolution. One of them thinks firing employees simply because they are gay is just dandy. Some proclaimed the idea of overturning Roe v Wade as the greatest day in American history. Seriously, *that's* going to top (as others have noted) abolishing slavery, Declaration of Independence etc etc etc?

I'd normally start screeching "What the fuck!?!?!" now, but really, it's about par for the course at this rate.

Incidentally, Glen Greenwald over at Salon has a pretty big beef with the allegedly sham gimmick for "viewer-suggested" questions. Apparently a lot of the most highly voted-for (and seemingly, substantive) questions were tidily disposed of lest they get in the way of snappy and pointless jibes about Clinton being back in the White House.

Not nearly as many times as they tried to plug Reagan for how super awesome he was.

Uggh.

What a ridiculous circle-jerk.
30% of the Republican candidates don't believe in evolution. That's so weird. They obviously lack the critical thinking skills necessary to make the big decisions.

More precisely, every candidate but Giuliani affirmatively stated that they'd want to see Roe v. Wade overturned. Giuliani said it would be "ok" if it was overturned at first, but then flipped and said he'd be "ok" with a woman making that choice themselves.

Goddamn pathetic.

And the Politico questions were a joke. Nothing of substance (and there were numerous substantive submitted questions to choose from) made it in except "Do you believe in evolution?" Even that was a botch, because they cut away from the ones that raised their hands to say that, no, they didn't before you had a chance to visually identify them.

What a crock and a sham we've allowed these sorts of debates to become.

I can't see how any woman, ethnic, religious, or sexual minority, progressive, independent or all-around sane person could vote for any of these jokers. They're like a parody of vacuousness in politics.

I was close in my guess. Would have taken the over.

Fred Thompson must love this.

The emerging consensus seems to be that Mitt Romney was the night's winner, with Giuliani stumbling slightly, and McCain doing okay (to steal Giuliani's odd choice of words on the abortion issue). Of the second tier candidates, Huckabee has gotten some praise from the media for his performance.

The Politico, one of the two sponsors of the debate, has a nice write-up summarizing the media reaction.
Wow. That was at least as underwhelming as Ghostbusters II. Douchebaggery kind of ruled the day but if I had to pick a winner it would be Jim Gilmour, who at least had the decency to acknowledge reality a little bit.

All in all...

How much do I love this quote:

It's nice to see the Republicans have as weak of a field as the Democrats. To quote Jon Stewart "It's a clusterfuck to the White House"

While I admit I cannot fully fathom the minds of Republican voters, as a Democrat I can't imagine I'm doing more hand-wringing than Republicans over our respective candidates. In terms of traditional Republican values, they must be horrified at the prospects.
I don't think the real Republican nominee has shown up yet, to be honest. But either way, I'm enjoying watching the GOP eat itself like an ouroboros.

I don't know, they had ten candidates up there. Who's left? Fred Thompson? The Reagan/Goldwater Zombie Ticket?
I think Fred Thompson is going to get in it, yeah.

He's the guy. If he gets in, it will hurt anyone who is running from the right. Guys like Brownback, Hunter, and Huckabee have been saying that the top 3 aren't real conservatives. They would be as good as dead. It could also hurt Romney, who is touting his conservative credentials and trying to run to the right of McCain and Rudy.

Right now, though, Fred Thompson seems great because he hasn't declared his candidacy. If he jumps in, he'll be torn to shreds like every other candidate. Sure, the guy is silver-tongued and a conservative, Republican insider, but what are his views and what skeletons are in his closet? Plus, he had a reputation in the Senate for not being the hardest worker in the world. I can't imagine a guy with his supposed work ethic being too thrilled taking on all the responsibilities of the presidency.
Yeah, I remember McClane doing all the work while he was stuck in the airport tower.
Also, Dalton Thompson has years of botched trial verdicts to defend.

And, of course, let's not forget he'll get slammed by GLADD for firing a gay employee "because she's a lesbian."

I liked Lewis Black's idea. He based it on the idea that no one tangles with the fucker who's crazier then them. So, Americans should elect a dead guy because it shows all the crazies in the world that America is even crazier. Actually swear in a corpse and let them play it on Al-Jazeera day after day after day...see what Al Qaeda does then.

Didn't watch the whole thing, but what I saw was scary.

MATT DAMON: One great way to save energy is around the home. If your house is anything like mine--

LEWIS BLACK: Stop. My house is nothing like yours. It's a lot smaller, and doesn't have an Affleck-shaped dent in the couch.

Round 2 tonight from South Carolina. Any bets on how many times Falwell's name gets mentioned?
None, I'd expect, unless someone wants to be linked to the "Gays caused 9/11" bandwagon. Maybe it'll be Guiliani. "Gays did cause 9/11. I know. I was there. 9/11!"
If you don't catch the thing on Fox, then you'll probably have to keep watching the channel since they won't allow C-SPAN to run repeats of the debate.
I think I know all I need to know. It's nice that the Republican candidates have stopped pretending to be decent people and shown themselves as the thugs they are. Apparently this Romney creature doesn't need real reasons to kidnap and torture people, Brit Hume's imaginary reasons will do. Ignorant, backwards scum, all of them.

Except the Libertarian. He's just ignorant and backwards, but maybe not scum. Do you think a Republican can get enough anti-science, pro-scum votes to win in 2008 after filming Democrat campaign ads for them via Fox News debates? They can't pretend to be good, compassionate people any more. Or will this all be forgotten in the yet-to-develop Swift Boat controversy over how many hours Democrat X spent in transit or some such trivial bullshit?
I really had a problem with the way Giuliani just shot down the one candidate who suggested the first Gulf War helped lead to 9/11. It's fairly common knowledge Bin Laden's mad-on for the US started when we put troops in Saudi Arabia, and the 9/11 hijackers were all Saudis. It may not be the strongest theory, but it didn't deserve the vehement dismissal Rudy gave it.

His propietary attitude towards 9/11 is really gonna start rubbing some people the wrong way if he's not careful. Hooray. You were there. That doesn't make yours the only valid opinion on the subject.

Garry Shandling had a great line about Giuliani on 9/11 when he was on Real Time a few weeks ago. Mentioning how all you saw were images of Rudy out walking the streets afterwards, he mentioned that the Port Authority had recommended placing their command center in a bunker in Brooklyn, but Rudy wanted it in the World Trade Center. So the reason Rudy was out walking the streets was, as Shandling put it, "he had nowhere fucking else to go!"

These are the lines that drew applause from the audience:

1) John Edwards in the beauty parlor - they simply adored that one
2) McCain's super-wimpy cop-out on the Confederate flag
3) Giuliani's shameless twisting of Ron Paul's caution about interventionism
4) Three cheers for torture!
5) Romney: Let's double the size of Guantanamo!
6) More cheers for torture

Wasn't it Richard Belzer who said that?

We tried that with Reagan, but it only seemed to piss the Middle-East off even more.
