I'm looking forward to this game more than any game ever made ever.
I'm just getting tired of playing Dod and Cs all day.

Sweet!! When is this coming out?
I think it's due out during late summer.

Nice. Thanks
Is this coming out for PC's or consoles?
PC & 360- looks like December.

PC is set for summer, 360 for december I guess. In interviews, the developers won't say whether or not you can play the pc version online with 360 players.
I'm pretty sure cross-platform playing won't happen since it'll use Steam on PC.
I never even heard of this game, but that movie makes me want to play it with my friends right away.
This game could be the best zombie game ever. Not that that's a hard accomplishment, since the current king is either Dead Rising or Resident Evil 2, depending on your criteria.

You like RE2 more than RE4?

I think it's because, in good conscience, you can't consider RE4 to be a zombie game because of the lack of said zombies. It's pod people, not zombies.

What he said, plus the fact that I haven't really played it, what with a lack of Gamecube and all.
RE4 is the greatest telling of Invasion Of The Body Snatchers there is.
the developers in that video are really annoying
post #17 of 778
Left 4 Dead is being written by the guys behind Old Man Murray, that most classic of comedy/videogame websites. Though I don't really know how much comedy writing would be needed for L4D. Or writing, period.
Looks fucking cool and this is coming from a guy tired of the 'zombie thing!'
Looks like the ultimate zombie game (assuming RE4 can't be considered as such.)

It's been pushed back to Febuary 08.
But the videos that have been posted are amazing.

Mega bump to get this one ready. Cause we're all going to be playing this sucker.

E3 Impressions!

Box art debacle!

That's an understatement.

Notice something? Sure, there's no fucking PS3 version even though we've been promised one.

Cunt off Valve.

EDIT: Before anyone comes to Valve's defence on how there's a PS3 version in the pipeline, it's EA who swung the possibility.
Gabe Newell has said multiple times that he really doesn't like developing for the PS3. I'm sure a port will happen eventually but it will be outsourced.
And it's not fiscally prudent to release the game on the PS3 (according to EA). Don't you have a 360 and PC? What's stopping you from buying it on those Bees?
The safe room conceit looks like so much fun.
I'll be picking it up for 360 hopefully but man, deciding to take evening classes during the October-December period and having a girlfriend is killing my ability to play all the games I'd like to.

I'm in exactly the same situation with a full time job as well. Most days I'd rather skip school, call in sick, and send her out with her friends so I can play. But, I'm realistic so I don't.

Although I might have to for this game.

EA are the ones who have gone on record as saying it is fiscally prudent, hence my EA comment. We'll see that port eventually, but I know EA's PS3 port track record.

My 360 is fried, which is why i've been asking recently about the newer generation's reliability in the 360 death thread.

My PC is currently running a shared-memory graphics accelerator, since my old mobo died and I can't afford a new PCIX one to replace AGP. If i'm going to do it, do it well (8800GT was my main pick) - then I realised I'll probably only ever play a few games on it, and to be fair - L4D isn't worth the price of a new graphics card.

Then i've got to buy up Bioshock, Fallout 3 & LBP all in the same space of time.

I'm fucked Spike, FUCKED!
Does the single player work ? or is it just a multiplayer affair?

RE: New 360s. If you buy an Arcade you're fine, totally new architecture in them.

I've just started University and over the next two months I have to buy Fallout 3, Saints Row 2, Fable 2, Left 4 Dead, Dead Space and Banjo Kazooie. I have to weight all those motherfuckers against 40 hours of reading a week, so don't expect no sympathy from me.
You're a student, you brought it upon yourself!

Also - Lovefilm?
I can LoveFilm some of them. But I think Left4Dead and Banjo are going to die online really quickly so I have to get in on the ground floor.

If you do get a LoveFilm account never, ever put mediocre games onto your list. If you stick Dark Sector onto your list to try and bulk it up a bit, by god they'll send it out as soon as they get it (even at low priority)
I will be picking it up again after you recently reasoned me into thinking its probably cheaper than buying single player games full price (MGS springs to mind) and only playing them once. I did end up putting shitty titles on it too, you kinda had to to guarantee some deliveries somedays.

Maybe i'll treat myself next month with all those releases.
Left 4 Dead will be released on the 18th of November worldwide on Steam. Retail-wise, Left 4 Dead will hit US shelves on the 18th, with Europe seeing the game on the 21st.

You think Left 4 Dead's going to die online quickly? Why do you say that?

I'm not disagreeing here; the truth is I don't play games online much at all, so have no clue how the trends go. How busy is TF2 these days?

TF2 dwindled pretty much a fortnight after the Orange Box was released. There's probably a couple of hundred people left playing the game. Even GTA IV kind of slipped off the radar in terms of multiplayer. I honestly think Left4Dead is too obscure for it to compete with Halo 3, Call of Duty 5 and Gears of War 2.

So you're talking Xbox Live then? Well, that does stink. For GTAIV as well, because I was enjoying playing that, but when my free month ran out, I didn't have much time to play so I didn't bother renewing. I plan to start it up again in the future, though. Hopefully I'll find some people to play with.

But as for L4D, I'll be getting in on the PC. Maybe it won't suffer the same problem over Steam (plus it'll be free to play, and with all the eventual user MODs and what have you).

ADD: The Similar Threads section below lists Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes - DEAD. Maybe Valve could fit some TLC on the soundtrack.
Im picking this up on release day so i wont miss out on anything. Im not sure if the multiplayer will drop off all together, but knowing how people play here on the boards, it wont last long.
I think there is a large difference between a class based sequel shooter game that was packaged in with Portal, Half Life 2, and Half Life Episodes 1 & 2, and a stand-alone shooter.

I never really played TF2 because I didn't want to deal with the learning phase of not knowing the game types and classes but with L4D, you get guns and a team and shoot zombies. Besides that though, just anecdotally, all of my friends with 360's are quite excited about L4D whereas amongst them basically no one was talking about TF2 as the main selling point for Orange Box.

On the pure competition side, with only the Treyarch CoD5 (which is set back in WWII again) and Gears of War not being an FPS, I think Left 4 Dead will have a bit more breathing room.
It's a stupid release date, CoD5 will slaughter it hands-down. Got F3 to contend with too hasn't it?

Ugh. My sympathies to anyone expecting this to have a huge initial fanbase to play with.
Well, at least three people from here are getting it so I'm sure I'll find someone to play with.
F3? Do you mean Fallout 3? They're completely different kinds of games though. And do you know how much people bitch about CoD3? I'm sure CoD5 will be interesting but I don't know anyone that's dying to play another WWII shooter.

My point was just, if you're looking for a new top-tier online FPS, it's basically CoD5 or this and I don't have any friends who are actively anticipating CoD5 like they are Left 4 Dead.
Simply, all my (admittedly, insane) 360-owning friends are already biting the surprisingly positive buzz around CoD5, especially the Infinity Ward supervision and multiplayer features they're kicking out.

Every. Single. One is buying CoD5 blind, day one. That's silly amounts of people. The same goes for my PS3 buddies, but obviously L4D's not competing for their cash. I'm simply saying you're severely underestimating the amount of positive buzz this game is getting.

Also, Fallout 3 doesn't need to be an FPS to take cash from the FPS crowd. It's got guns and two pedigrees - developer and franchise, which will easily poach a severe amount of the crowd.

Ordinary people do not buy a game a week, and these are the people who make the sales figures reach the millions. They only buy the big stuff, and F3/CoD5 has both months covered. Even if that still doesn't destroy it, Gears will literally wipe the floor with any leftover cash. Possibly moreso.

Of course, we'll see it in the sales figures when they come out I guess, but you're misjudging the game-buying public.

Still, you might just be in it for Chewer action. In which case, cool.
Bees, yours is the first I've heard of anyone looking forward to COD5. Everyone I know is staying the hell away. I don't think Left 4 Dead will really hurt because of COD5 or Fallout 3. You say Fallout has the developer and franchise behind it to poach the crowd...well have you heard of a small development outfit called Valve? I think they might have one or two pretty hardcore fans.

I expect Left 4 Dead to be packed with people, and I hope to be able to pick it up.
The CoD5 love is a shock to me too. It's not an off-the-cuff remark though, major press is going ga-ga for it, especially over the past few months.

A playtest recently even piqued my curiosity too. Treyarch haven't ever given the world anything worth playing, but the Infinity Ward involvement has really made the difference.

We'll meet back here for the release when I eat my hat, or tell you guys I told you so - but I suspect you'll be seriously surprised by this one.

EDIT: Yeah, i've heard of Valve - but that's not 2 pedigrees. That's 1.
There's no denying that Call of Duty has the better mainstream recognition, but don't underestimate the power of zombie related video games. They're a mainstay and with L4D actually showing some sort of innovation in the genre via the multiplayer aspect I expect it to sell fairly well.
I don't understand why you would think the combination of an isometric 3rd person turn based role playing game and a first person RPG maker into a Mass Effect-esque post apocalyptic RPG is going to be what takes attention away from an intensely co-op driven online zombie FPS.

Money. Gamers are gamers, most are not genre-exclusive and most will not spend upwards of hundreds of dollars a month buying everything that is released.

Most will buy Fallout 3 based on what the game has to offer, play to completion, then pick up CoD5 and play that for several months afterwards, perhaps picking up L4D during this period out of curiosity - but unlikely, since Gears will take the general 360 crowd's money and spend it on booze and hookers.

This isn't speculation, this is press manipulation - which governs which games are hyped and which are not. L4D looks fantastic, but will not compete with CoD5 - which wouldn't surprise me if it's one of the biggest selling games this year.

The buzz is that good.
