Yeah, friendly fire basically plays into the whole Director AI routine. If you're engaging in a lot of friendly fire, the assumption is that you suck (as far as I can tell; there might be a point where the AI just considers you an asshole, or it might leave that decision to other players) and so you'll get a different, more lenient playthrough. That means easier lighting, fewer horde attacks, probably fewer Tanks and other sub-boss zombies.
The video Alex linked is a bit disingenuous, as you can blow up the gas station either way; but if you're firing into a lot of onrushing infected that's more likely to happen, obviously.
(Besides, WTF are you doing on the ground at that point, anyway? In the game as it stands now, there's a perfectly good roof from which to approach that scene.)
