Amy Winehouse

Yeah, I know she's ripping on classic soul and pulling the retro bullshit that seems popular these days but damn if she isn't fucking good.
She looks like a drunk robot when she performs.
Not particularly thrilled by her. But her genre isn't my cup of tea anyway.

Yeah, "Back to Black" is pretty fantastic. As an added bonus, she's unbelievably terrifying in real life. She's like the Bride of Frankenstein focused through Rank'n'Bass stop motion animation.
I like her on the Ghostface album.
Other than looking like a Man in drag, she has quite a wonderful voice. I think her old old school sounding songs sound like the shit I grew up on (having a Dad who made me listen to Howlin' wolf and Muddy Waters.)
Thus far, I like what I've heard, which is only about two or three songs off her latest album. It's a disc that I'd like to pick up in the near future, but it's not a priority at this point.
I saw her on the Charlotte Church show doing "Beat It" with Church. Talk about a fucking trainwreck.

Anyway, I haven't picked up the album but I'm interested in it. My old man digs her a lot, which means that she might be all right. The guy thinks CRASH is better than BROKEBACK, but he's always had stellar taste in tunes.

"Rehab" has been my personal mantra for a few months now. I say no, no no!

"You Know I'm No Good" has been mine since I happened upon it on VH1 a few days ago. And I usually hate this kind of music, but like Nick said, she's fucking good.

Actually, I think she looks more like a mutant Gina Gershon.

I find her very sexy.

Same here. I might have to check her out if she's as good as everyone says she is.

That's the sort of father I hope to be, though I lean more towards giving my kids the gift of Tom Waits and Warren Zevon.

Fixed!
Yep, good album. I gave it to a couple of people for birthdays recently and they dug it, too.
I am going to give this for Mother's Day and see what happens.
I love it, too.

She sounds like damaged goods and she has some serious pipes.

And yes, compared to the wealth of glossed up female "pop stars", she's a fucking 10. I'll take a little wear and tear over Hillary Duff's bulletproof sheen any day.
Looks like she's playing at ACL this year...I'll be sure to check her out.
You're the biggest douche in the universe. Go away.

Back on topic...I'm on the side of "Talented but mind-shatteringly ugly". "Me and Mr. Jones" is fantastic, and not just because it introduced me to the word "fuckery".

Between Amy, Aimee Mann, Zero 7's Sia, and a few select others, we're in a very nice era for good lady singers whose music supercedes their looks.
Aimee Mann is not a lesbian. She probably has some standards, like not fucking goats and ignoring pieces of shit like you.
Aimee Mann's "One More Drifter in the Snow" might be my favorite Christmas album of all time. She's pretty remarkable.

Fag perhaps?

I don't find it hard to believe that Lizra has so much success with the ladies, given that he retains the potency-raising power of foreskin. Those of us who lack this essential element of manhood can only dream of almost having sex with all of the women with whom he claims to have almost had sex.

I'm going to go have a cry now over my hideously uncovered, mutilated member. But, please - keep talking about Amy Winehouse while the circumcision holocaust continues.
Indeed. Thanks to my foreskin, I am able to lift a Volvo with my penis while making sweet tender love to my trio of passable Playmates concubines. Of course, that's nothing compared to Riquolice Lizra, who has his ass wiped by Monica Bellucci every morning while eating waffles off Salma Hayek's tits.

Oh, sweet Lord, what the hell is going on with her teeth? Those are bad even by British standards.

Edited to add that "Tears Dry On Their Own" just shuffled up on my iPOD and it's, like, absurdly good. That is all.

Just a lil' reminder.

Why is it that every discussion of a female artist on this board centers around how hot or ugly she is?
For my part, I was merely trying to direct attention away from the fact that I don't like her music very much, and hopefully do it in a way that makes you chuckle.

That's not say that I can't seriously contribute to a music thread about a female artist. Just not with Amy Winehouse, whose sound, to me, seems very safe. I prefer Aimee Mann, and Neko Case, if the comparisons are apt.

You do live in this world, right? That's how every discussion about females turns out whether on these boards or in real life.

Or, most importantly, no foreskin! I mean, sure Diva and Werewolf Girl - you're all bothered by the objectification of women. What about the scores of guys you've probably turned down just because of their lack of foreskin or alternately due to their emotionally crippled status borne from the lack of said penile dressing? This is clearly objectification of the worst kind, and, while the cut-n-run methods of the baby mutilation industry may not be your fault directly, you only add to the problem by obsessing about that sweet, sweet foreskin with which you ladies are so constantly preoccupied.

I dig that too.

My girlfriend bought this album, and though I've put it on my ipod, I've yet to listen to it. But from what I've heard, it really seems a hell a lot better than, oh, let's say, Lily Allen.

Lack of intellect I figure.
Amy Winehouse is currnely my fave new artist
Her voice is a shining beacon of humanesque excellence amidst and endless sea of Simpson/Spearoids we seem to be suffering through. I don't believe she actually ever sat down and deliberately decided to cash on the Retro Movement as others seemed to have intimated. I love every delicious sliver of each and every one of her songs.

Maybe it's because I'm not as connected to MTV as I once was, but I can't think of who you could mean by this (maybe Fergie?). Britney Spears hasn't released an album since 2004, and Jessica Simpson's last album was a huge, huge flop. It seems like most of what goes on in popular music these days is stuff like Fallout Boy, Gym Class Heroes, and The Killers.

Moreover, no matter how much I do like this album (and I like it quite a bit), it's hardly a daring departure from other pop music out there today. You can easily find another dozen artists mining the same influences with Nora Jones, Joss Stone, Regina Spektor, etc.

I find Winehouse lacks a certain wetness that these others artists posses that stops me from fully appreciating their music. I never said Winehouse was an innovative artist who's work could be classified as a Daring Departure incidentally, just that I don't think she is deliberately cashing in on a wave of music that is currently popular.
I think Norah Jones is a great singer don't get me wrong, but still kinda wet. Best thing Joss Stone ever did was sing a passage from Rehab as a diss to Robbie Williams.

I LOVE this Back to Black album. Loved her on the Ghostface Killah album, she's even better on her own.

When someone looks like a toothless jackal I think you have to bring it up.
I like her albums, but I was both shocked and amused to hear my four year old ask "What kind of fuckery is this?".
Don't care if she's hot or not but she's like diarrhea for the ears. No wonder she's been in rehab so much. I wonder if she and Lindsay Lohan will do a duet while shooting heroin into their eyeballs.

Now that would be the best video ever!
