Nissan Xterra...thoughts?

I am in the market for a mid-size SUV, for my impending move out east.

I test drove an FJ cruiser...which actually has a more full size SUV body, and hated it. For all its novelty on the outside, the interior is terrible. The back doors are "suicide" style, but they REQUIRE the front driver or passenger doors to be opened to access the fucking handle. The backseat has enough room for a 5 year old. It is also horribly overpriced.

I then test drove an Xterra, and fucking loved it. Drives real well, good accel for city/highway driving, mileage could be better but not terrible, and everything in it is so damn functional. Lots of pockets and utility inside it.

Any Xterra owners with thoughts to provide? Or just other mid size SUV recommendations.

AJ on the sopranos has one so you should definetely get one

I have a 2003 Toyota Highlander and can recommend it wholeheartedly. Although I've never driven more than 500 miles at a time w/ it, so not sure how it'll handle a cross-country journey.

Wouldn't it be better to rent a truck/van, and buy a new car out there though? I'm usually paranoid about warranty issues once I'm outside the dealership jurisdiction.

oh yea, im just in the market for a new car.

sorry to give the impression that I was driving it out east. I most likely wont be doing that, and likely buying it out east. I am still in the searching phase.

I have heard good things about the highlander. i might check that one out.

I don't know if it's too small for your needs, but my wife and I just bought a Nissan Murano SL, and it's got a lot of nice features. Intelligent key, rear view camera that switches on when the car is in reverse, and a ton of space in the back, with easy-to-use handles to fold the seats down.

Our model didn't include the "Aux-in" input for an iPod, but other than that, we're really happy with it.

If it helps, I bought a new 2006 one year ago and love it. Drove it from Vancouver to the Grand Canyon and back. I've put 25000 km's on it without a hitch other than a squeaky inside rear door cover. It gets pretty decent fuel mileage for a vehicle of it's size. On the Arizona freeways there at 70-80 mph, I was getting between 25-30 mpg. So all in all, a hearty endorsement, lots of room, and really comfortable.

I like the styling of the Chrysler Pacifica, and they've apparently ironed out some of the issues with the '04 debut model (lack of horsepower, reliability).

It still sucks gasoline like a fiend, though.

I have an '05 Pathfinder and I love the shit outta it. I needed something a little bigger than the Xterra. I have a friend who has an '06 (I think) Xterra and he's crazy about it.

I also test drove 4Runners at the time and was thoroughly unimpressed with them.

I have a 2000, and I love it. It's a gas guzzler like any SUV, but it's less money than a new car payment.

This is my second Nissan, and I've never had to do anything on either one beyond normal maintenance. No surprises.

People seem to dig the theater seating, so they can see. I've used the roof rack more than I thought I would, and even the gimmicky first aid kit has come in handy countless times.

In my opinion, the later models have become flashier than the Spartan image they were originally advertised as, but performance hasn't been affected.

Oh, and always take the roof basket out when you wash it. Water collects there.

Advice for any new car purchase: Find a place to rent one and drive it for a couple days. Nothing like determining that the cupholders suck and it can't hold your cell phone and it doesn't corner well enough to park at your favorite little hole-in-the-wall restaurant's tiny parking lot. If you still like it after a day or three, buy it.

Another thing that surprised me about the 4Runner was its fucking price. Its hitting 40 grand easy. Back when I was in college about 6-7 years ago the 4runner was still a workman like SUV, and now all of a sudden its a luxury model.

Good thought about renting it as well.

Isn't the Pacifica the one that goes all wicked crazy if you roll the windows down while traveling at any speed higher than 30 mph?

I think that's what my uncle had rented when he came down for my grandmother's funeral last year, and the car went absolutely nuts with the windows down. The noise was ridiculous.

Great ride, other than that.

Oh, and second the love for the 4Runner...but yeah, the price is getting a bit unbearable.

They recently restyled the Rav4, btw...and the new version is a lot roomier. I'm 6' and I was stretching out in the back seat.

*sigh*

I've always wanted a Mini Cooper with rally car specs.

for those that are xterra owners, if you leased, what kind of payments am i looking at? it seems like nissan throws a lot of rebates and discounts at you if you are in the market for an xterra.

I'd heard they are great for flipping over! I'd had a couple friends wreck theirs pretty darn easily.

People need to understand what sport utilities were designed for, not what they're sold as. Having a higher center of gravity means you should follow posted speed limits when cornering.

That being said, the Xtera is a sexy vehicle. I've got a '93 and a '05 Pathfinder (my extended family owns six Pathfinders, and nine Nissans in total), and I'd have purchased an Xtera if it would have had larger cabin capacity.

Have you test-drove a four-door Jeep Wrangler? You may know it by its other name, The Only SUV Worthy Of Being Called Cool.
How do you feel about paying $50 for gas every 275 miles? If that bothers you, you should consider something with a smaller engine. I have a Jeep Liberty (not a real Jeep, as Rex pointed out) and I hate buying gas for the thing.

4 cylinder engines are for pussies.

granted more fuel efficient pussies, but pussies nonetheless.

but seriously, i have considered dropping down from a v6, but i am just far too used to having that kind of power in a vehicle. i am not totally sold on sacrificing power.
