The 100 Best Cameos In Film History

Thread Starter
I'll start... with a lowbrow one.

1. Matt Damon, Eurotrip
While it's a goofy, barely-there teen romp, credit goes to Matt Damon, who scores the funniest moment in the movie, crooning "Scotty Doesn't Know" a song about how he's fucking the ex-girlfriend of poor, oblivious Scotty, who happens to be in attendance. Matt Damon- good guy who gives good cameo.

2) Ted Danson- Saving Private Ryan
I just wasn't expecting it at all. It kind of sucks that he was pigeon holed by Cheers and Becker because I believe he could have been a pretty good serious actor.
Arnold in The Rundown.
Lance Armstrong, Dodgeball

Not exactly the best acting in the world, but I thought it was one of the highlights of the film.
Sean Connery, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. Especially if you saw it opening weekend and had no idea it was coming.
I'd argue against Danson is Saving Private Ryan because it was quite a distracting cameo. Simply because it was Ted Fucking Danson, in a serious war movie. Was it his fault? No, he was fine in the small role. It's just he carries too much baggage with him and it pulled me completely out of the film.

On the subject of Spielberg...

6)Steven Spielberg- The Blues Brothers.
An argument could be made for Frank Oz's small part, because it's actually, you know, funny. Spielberg isn't one to pop up in films too often though(and not recognized by your "average joe"), so it's pretty memorable, and way better than George Lucas' cameo in Beverly Hills Cop III. The Blues Brothers is also way better than Beverly Hills Cop III. In fact, fuck Beverly Hills Cop III.
Charlton Heston in Burton's POTA. I thought it was awesome to cast him in his deathbed, because that's the only way you could contain his penchant for overacting.

Also, any Bruce Campbell cameo is pure gold.

edit - I almost forgot, Pegg & Wright in LOTD.

The Chuck Norris cameo is also pretty great if only for the "Fuckin' Chuck Norris' line in the epilogue.

Frank Oz in "Trading Places".

Talking about La Boheme with Dan Aykroyd.
I have to go for Martin Scorsese in Taxi Driver.

Probably the most oft quoted part in the film among my circle of friends.
The list so far, because I'm anal:

1. Matt Damon - Eurotrip
2. Ted Danson - Saving Private Ryan
3. Arnold - The Rundown
4. Lance Armstrong - Dodgeball
5. Sean Connery - Robin Hood: The Prince of Thieves
6. Steven Spielberg - The Blues Brothers
7. Charleton Heston - Planet of the Apes
8. Frank Oz - Trading Places
9. Martin Scorsese - Taxi Driver
10. Bob Barker - Happy Gilmore

Cate Blanchett
Steve Coogan
Bill Nighy
Martin Freeman - Hot Fuzz.
Jess Stevenson in Shaun of the Dead (if you know spaced)
James Earl Jones - Sneakers
Emilio Estevez - Mission: Impossible

we should probably number them after we get 100 really good ones.
Also, are we talking uncredited cameos here?

Really shocked this isn't already up there

12. Alec Baldwin - Glengarry Glenn Ross

He owns every second he's on screen with one of the greatest monologues in film but also about being a salesman.
Brad Pitt in True Romance (or Val Kilmer, or Dennis Hopper, or Bronson Pichot, or-)
So far it seems as though there's a fine line between Cameo and Supporting Actor.

But my vote for #14 goes to Werner Herzog in What Dreams May Come.
15. Michael Keaton - OUT OF SIGHT.
David Bowie in ZOOLANDER. And while I'm at it, Billy Zane in ZOOLANDER.

Yeah, I'd really, really have to argue with the idea that Alec Baldwin in Glengarry is a cameo.

My pick: Marcel Marceau, world-famous mime, who speaks the only word of dialogue in Mel Brooks' Silent Movie.
Martin Scorcese/Joe Dante in Cannonball.

Not being a jerk -- just can't remember -- when does Scorsese speak in Taxi Driver? I remember the shot of him watching Betsy walk by, but the voiceover is Deniro.

My votes:
Christopher Merloni (from Law & Order: SVU) as FREAKSHOW in Harold & Kumar.

Also, I didn't know Will Ferrell was in Wedding Crashers until he appeared late in the film. But I'm not sure that's really a cameo.

I also would like to vote no on Alec Baldwin's appearance in Glengarry, Glenross (Glen Ross? i forget) as a cameo. It seems borderline. he's onscreen for about 10 minutes, which seems too long. (which is why I hesitate on my two choices now!)

ADDED:
http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/cameo
According to dictionary.com, a cameo is "a minor part played by a prominent performer in a single scene of a motion picture or a television play."

So, I would now say that Baldwin is a cameo. 1 scene. Minor part. Minor? well, he's necessary to the story. maybe that's why it feels wrong.

"Ever seen what a .45 will do to a woman's pussy? That you should see." That's Scorsese.

Also, yeah, I have to say that's a big no on Baldwin in GGR.
Kevin McCarthy= in Invasion of the Body Snatchers remake ('78) and Looney Tunes: Back in Action.

Michael Keaton isn't the only person to play the same role in 2 different non-sequel films.

EDIT: That reminds me... John Hurt in Spaceballs.

Marcel Marceau, Silent Movie

He's has a scene in Travis' cab, watching his wife up in some apartment they're parked in front of. She's cheating on him, he's following her, and he's babbling about what a gun would do to a woman's face/pussy. "Now that, you should see."
As I recall, they had someone else cast, and Scorsese had already done his cameo, but something happened and he ended up playing that role himself(and doing a great job, too). Or something along those lines, anyway. Someone feel free to correct me.

Where was Blanchett in Hot Fuzz? I must be getting slow in my old age.

*edit- I have to stop keeping my reply windows open for extended periods of time without writing anything. Rath beat me to the Scorsese thing. Tabbed browsing has made me slack.
Seriously, with A.Collins, I hate to be the neg-bomb, but some of these aren't cameos. Baldwin in Glengarry is too large a role. He is a supporting character. And it's Meloni, not Merloni.

I don't have a vote for best cameo. They're all trite.

I believe she was Pegg's girlfriend who was all covered up (so you wouldn't have even been able to recognize her) at the crime scene.

Tom Waits as desert....God? in Domino. In a movie full of what the fuck moments, that tops it.

Gwen Stefani as Jean Harlow in "The Aviator".
Mostly because she's ridiculously good looking in her brief appearance.

Bob Saget - Half Baked

The best cameo in a movie full of them.
I don't know if it's a legitimate cameo, but Neil Patrick Harris (as himself) in Harold & Kumar had me in tears.
And Jeff Goldblum wasn't even a name back then, so it wasn't a cameo it was a one-line role.
Sure, there's plenty of Mike Myers hate to be found, but Danny DeVito as Mini-Me absolutely killed. Pretty much the entire "Austinpussy" cast was funnier than anything else in the franchise.

Rammstein in XXX.
