Austin, TX

Hey, I'll be in the great Lone Star State for my first time next weekend for a wedding, and I was hoping to field some suggestions on places to visit, things to see while I'm there. I'm not gonna have much time but I wanted to get some ideas where I have none.

Btw, I put this thread in the Chewers' forum because of the city's national appeal.

You have to try and catch a screening at one of the Drafthouses (I reccomend the downtown one, personally, especially since it's about to close) during your stay. It's every bit as great as you've heard.

Everything you need to do is on 6th Street.

Or can be picked up on 6th street and taken back to your hotel.

It's worth taking a stroll around the State Capitol grounds. They're pretty, and the building is enormous.

A question for those that live in or frequent Austin: what's with you guys and one-way roads?

Yeah, even if I don't have time to catch a screening at the Alamo Drafthouse, I'll still stop by, check it out and pick up a t-shirt.

Is the wedding in South or North Austin? Go to Kerbey Lane and get some pancakes. They are the best pancakes I have had.

Its actually 45 min outside of Austin, in Wemberley. But I'll have some time on Sunday (the most happening day of the week) to walk around.

While kinda touristy, my wife and I went on a 3 hour Segway tour of Austin when we first moved here. The Segways are way the hell too much fun and the tour itself was pretty informative even though the guide wears a helmet. They take you up past the capitol and give you a brief rundown of this fucked up'd state's history. Did you know that Texas can secede from the US at any point and become 5 states?

One of the downtown Alamo shows (alamodrafthouse.com) is high on the list. At least at that location you can catch one of the quirky offerings they have.

Sixth Street is great to grab a drink and hear tons of music, usually without cover charge. Fourth Street is a little more laid back and less college-y. There's a wonderful bar called The Ginger Man with ~100 beers on tap.

Half my life was spent in S Austin, and I really have no answer for that...

That and amazing bands...great food and fantastically witty wait-staff.

Seconded.

Make it a priority to go to the Drafthouse downtown, since it's closing.

I like how it's closing now...only a few months before my 21st birthday.

Fuckers.

They are going to re-open it. It's just moving. Plus there are other locations you can go to.

Jared are you in Belton or Temple?
I'm in Temple.

...and hey, if anybody's ever passing through and just has to put up in Temple for the night, check out the Hilton Garden Inn and make sure to chat with the auditor during the night shift.

He gets lonely.

...I feel like a shill.

There's also THE PARAMOUNT. And Leslie if you can find him/her.

I will second Kirby Lane and the Drafthouse. I don't know what they are calling Mr. Sinus Theater these days, but I used to love those shows.

Bitter End Brewery is a little high end on the price range, but the beer and food are good. Saltlick BBQ if you can get a ride out there.

Breakfast tacos from Rudy's are good (BBQ is pretty good as well at any of them).

If you want a good record store, check out Waterloo Records. Bookpeople across the street is a pretty great bookstore as well. Austin Books is a pretty great comic book store.

Freebirds has great burritos (the one at Hancock Center is also frequented by many UT Co-eds).

Check out what is at the Harry Ransom Center at UT. They have some great exhibits there (the Ransom Center actually has one of the original Letherface masks from Texas Chainsaw Massacre).

And as someone said, check to see if the Paramount is playing anything. They have great old movies during the summer.

Thanks for the tips, guys. The Drafthouse was closed while I was in town and downtown was otherwise deader than dirt. But Waterloo Records was worth it. I actually had a better time in the area SW of Austin. Who knew it was wine country out there?
The hill country is huge for wine. And it's all pretty decent, too.

And while I agree that Freebirds is great, if I'm anywhere in central Texas, I will make the trek to SA and hit up Chacho's, this single greatest mexican food resteraunt on the face of the planet.
